I noticed that Rage Against the Machine was the only band to have all their music banned

Boy, there are some real odd choices in there though...

EDIT: The article says these songs were not actually banned, but I have seen the same list around the 'Net in the past. Wonder why they made the list?

I'm pretty sure were beyond the wake.

I don't understand how you guys managed to let almost all the radio stations in your country get run by one corporation though.

Right after 9/11, radio stations did not play certain songs for fear of upsetting people. The "ban" didn't last long and it was only on Clear Channel stations if I remember correctly. Everything is back to normal now and we are free to be subjugated to the drivel which is many of these songs.

Well, based upon what the above artice discussed, as well as other similar articles on the Internet (thanks Google), I an assume that this list was drawn up by the powers that be in order to curb any song that might've been considered disrespectful.

The list was in fact made, and it was in fact forwarded to the station managers of Clear Channel.

In no way does it look like these songs/artists were banned permanently. However, one would assume that these songs were indeed discouraged from being played immediately following 9/11.

I just thought the whole thing was interesting. Especially the song choices.

I can't really imagine anyone calling in to a clear channel station and complaining that elton john's benny and the jets is disrespectful to the 9/11 victims.

but then again every day I read this forum I realize more and more that I lack the capacity to understand just how stupid some people are.

I have to stop agreeing with Kyoukan.. All the Clear Channel stations I know of suck and were the main reason I stopped listening to the raido. Apparently their suck goes beyond their choice in songs, though, since they have a site dedicated to them at http://www.clearchannelsucks.org/

Those songs were created before 9/11 and have nothing to do witht he incident, the only way it would be inappropriate to play them is right after talking about 9/11...

Like for example if you said "and here is a moment of silence for the people who lost thier lives on 9/11" 30 secs of silence followed by "nanana na nanana na hey hey hey...goodbye"

That would be pretty upsetting to some people.....

But just playing the song....I mean come on...it has nothing to do with 9/11. Nostradamus didn['t write the song, they didn't know 9/11 would happen......it's not about the incident.

That would be like saying not to play by groups who have dead band members....because the families of the dead band members might get upset....so there goes the beetles right?

This list WAS posted in the wake of the attack. I remember seeing it and posting it on the MB of the guild I was in back in Sept 2001.

All of these songs WERE forbidden to be played on any CC station after the attack. There was a date when it was lifted, but I am not sure what they date was, nor do I care to look it up.

And to the absurdity of certain song choices. They sat down with their entire catalog...and checked off anything that had to do with: flying, planes, death, afterlife, crashes, arab people, violence, new york, and of course - politcal dissidence (rage) etc etc....ANYTHING remotely, even rediculously related, was put on the list.

As to why one song by a band was banned and not another. These songs all have one thing in common....They are radio played singles. Is that other song you mentioned a major radio single? I'm not talking about getting play on the sunday night college radio show...I'm talking top 40 whatever category of radio your channel falls into.

As to Clear Channel, yes they buy everything remotely popular in each of the better markets in America. We don't really have any say as to what they buy and what they don't. We can't stop them. We can stop listening to them, and most people capable of concious thought do, because Clear Channel caters to the musical taste of the mindless masses of America. More or less, they play shit we don't want to hear. They closed down my favorite station in Dallas, and fucked the DJ's who had been household names in the market for like 30 years. One poor guy is stuck doing traffic until his contract is up because they found some loop in his contract they could fuck him with. CC music stations generally have the most annoying, rediculous play lists that make me want to learn to speak chinese from someone with a lisp rather than listen to their radio. One exception to the CC sucks rule is the talk station in Orlando. Only beacuse the shows that were there when they bought it, heh.

98 Rock in Tampa used to be my favorite station. I seldom used my CD player, and I couldn't have named another station in town for 1.5 years. CC bought them, and all the sudden it's the same shit at the same time EVERY FUCKING DAY.

"99 Luft Balloons" is a song about nuclear holocaust caused by a trigger happy military industrial complex. (They fired nukes because they thought the 99 balloons were an attack by the commies). That's why it was banned I would guess.
