Yzerman, Federov, Larionov become unrestricted free agents...

I told you the Redwings would be hit hard financially when they got swept.

It's a dark day in Hockeytown...

Nobody can stay on top forever. The Red Wings had a glorious run though. Now it's time to become the Chicago Bulls of hockey for the next decade or 2 :(

Yzerman will be back, or retired. There is no way he finishes his career on another team. Larionov was on that squad that "lost to a bunch of college kids in Lake Placid", so I'd say he may be just a tad past his prime, anyway. Federov will likely be gone, though, and that is a shame for the RedWings.

This will be a very strange year for free agency. A lot of great names out there, but not as much cash. It will be interesting to see how many players actually join a new team or just settle for the hometown discount.

You people are smoking crack if you think that this means the Wings will be the Chicago Bulls of hockey anytime soon. My money is on Stevie Y being back next year, but we played half the year without him before and could still win games. I would hate to see him retire, but he's not leaving unless it's for retirement. As far as Larionov is concerned, he's contributed a ton to the Wings over the years, but he is no spring chicken. And the Wings offered Federov a 4 year, 40 Million dollar contract that he turned down, there's probably 2 or 3 other teams that can afford to pay him more than that. Good luck, Sergei. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least 2 of those 3 in Red Wings jerseys next season.

I don't think it's a financial issue really, so much as they still had some questions up in the air with figuring out what to do with Hasek and CuJo and some of the people they have to worry about keeping. No one has contributed more to an organization that Yzerman has, and I'm sure that they'll do whatever they can to get him back next year.

Sylvus, your hopeful words and team spirit remind me of my uncle who consistantly voices the same cautious optimism every single year in regards to the Detroit Lions.

I mean, you never know, you may end up being right. However, I highly doubt it. The Red Wing's glory days are behind them now.

Yzerman isn't going anywhere. He and his agent have already said they will work out something with Detroit.

Fuck Federov, I say. They offered him a 4 year/$40m contract and that's not enough? "NO I WANT 5/$50m WAHHHHHH!" I hope the Carolina Hurricanes sign him so he can see how good he had it in Detroit. I hate players that are so hung up on the money, so I'm really disappointed in Federov. However, he did this last time his contract was up for renewal so I can't really say I'm suprised.

Larionov will probably just retire. He almost did after they won the last Cup.

McCarty and Wooley are re-signed, hooray! Also they signed Derian Hatcher from Dallas. He will add even MORE depth to an already strong defensive team.

I dunno what will happen with the Hasek/Joseph situation. Hasek is clearly the better goalie, but if he comes back how long will he play? One more season? Then the Wings will be in the same position they were last season, without a goalie. (Though I think they really should give Legace a shot as a starter.)

Red Wings aren't going anywhere any time soon. I fully expect them to be in the top three seeds of the Western Conference next season.

The difference being that the Wings have won 3 Stanley Cups in the last 7 or so years, and the Lions haven't ever even won a Super Bowl. My support for the Wings is pretty realistic, and I keep my love for the Lions in the closet. Hopefully they'll win one before I die.

If teh Lions could find a coach who a) isn't stupid (Wayne "Let's not Put an O-line in Front of the Greatest Runner to Ever Touch Pigskin" Fontes) and b) isn't a fucking pussy they could do good things.

Red Wings need a minder that can actually perform under pressure. At least they're in better shape than the Pens. I wish fucking Pittsburgh would fucking build them a better home than the ghetto-ass Civic Arena. I mean, they built the fucking Pirates a new park, and those chumps couldn't beat the Taiwanese little league team.

Emmit Smith played for the Lions?

You're fucking kidding me, right Cartalas? Barry Sanders did more in less time behind NO offensive line than Emmit did in more time behind one of the greatest lines in football, at least in their era.

You put Barry Sanders on the Cowboys of the 90s and he would have rushed for 3000 yards in a season.

Also, I'm *hoping* that Mariucci (nfc how to spell that, that feels close enough) might finally be the coach we've needed. He's a proven winner, at any rate.

Im fucking with Masteen I know of his love for Barry. Now if Emmit does well with Arizona I might change my mind.

Hence, my example of the Chicago Bulls. From everything to nothing. The same thing happened to the Chicago Blackhawks. I couple of key players left, and they went from real contenders to garbage in a single season. Oh well. Like I said, it may not happen to the Red Wings, but I personally think it will.

Mariucci looks like he could be just the guy to get Harrington into top form. He also did a pretty good job of keeping Owens' massive ego in check, but I don't know if he's enough of a hard-ass to whip the rest of that slack ass team into shape.

Fortunately, they won't see Tampa Bay AT ALL next season (barring a miracle play-off season), so Joey gets to keep his head attached
