It's a reasonable request, so long as people are reasonable in their avatars. Considering size in bytes, size in geometry and content members have been pushing the limits. I think that some casual requests might have solved the problem without resorting to full-blown censorship...

You have 2 different things that happened today... there was an argument that people were abusing avatar size in dimensions and in file size, so we made the change to enforce stricter size policy. This board has a NWS area for a reason. If people can't refrain from posting questionable material (photos/videos) outside of the designated area, or link 300k+ avatars/sigs, NWS or not, then it seems like a rule or two isn't a bad thing. People throwing around 'censorship' in this debate is like Al Sharpton throwing around 'racism' for every issue. It's just a hotbutton meant to stir controversy.

The majority of boards out there that I've seen have similar rules in regards to avatars and sigs.

And for what it's worth, I suggested guidelines be posted before making it a rule. But I can live with either one.

(And no, I'm not the judge of what's questionable and what's not. I have my opinions but that's all they are.)

Most of the time converting an avatar pic to a GIF will solve the size problem.

I'd much rather see people be given the option to disable avatars than have restrictions put on them. It shouldn't be difficult at all to do that and would piss fewer people off.

That's unfortunately not a built in option for phpBB. There might be a 'hack' for it (open source PHP source code modification) but we've added so much crap to the original code I don't know if it would even work. If someone can find something like that, we might could try it out.

I agree Karae, the optimal solution would be giving people as many choices as possible, but if that's not an option right now I think this is a decent solution.

100 pixels max is my personal guideline for length/width on an avatar, but I think Xo allows more than that.

d) The NWS board was made and created because everyone asked to keep it to one place (Image wise) except in special circumstances (Imaging/Art since boobies can be artistic and NWS at the same time).


As far as comparisons to IGN, shrug, what can be said. These actions are performed based on what people on the board are saying, and not a third party who dictates rulesets based on a lowest common denominator from many communities. You can still say all the bad words we want - hell, we turn innocent words into 'evil' words. You can still post all the porn you want - in it's proper section. Images can still be linked, avatars can still be used.

Shrug - I avoid all opression/censorship issues as much as I can on an official level, because for the most part the community *is* self policing (and I fucked it up once...whoops). On a personal level I am of the opinion that if you are surfing a board at a place where these type of avatars are considered NWS and you don't have the administrative rights to disable it - you shouldn't be surfing the site. Seriously, I don't want anyone fired for reading this board. Once again that is a personal opinion - I have read the other sides arguments, and can clearly see where they are coming from and respect those opionions, I just don't have to agree with it.

P.S. thanks for the board modification suggestions here and in pms/email - we are working on a new board, but planning is being a bitch even without the code to worry about. Honestly, we do try and implement as many things as we can to give the best personal 'experience' to everyone. As can be seen recently with things like birthdays and long term problems like pm's not working, things don't like to play nice with each other always, so we are trying to get everything done with one version at once, instead of a base install, and new mods as they come out written for newer versions. Run on sentences are the win.
