To clarify what I mean here:

If you're Jewish, you're white.
If you're Irish, you're white.
If you're Sicilian, you're white.
If you trace your ancestry largely to Europe or Russia, you're almost certainly white.
If you're 90% white but you have a great-grandfather who was half Native American, you're white.
If you're legitimately multiracial and have strong associations with other aspects of your minority culture, you can be non-white if it fits with your identity to be so.

Basically, no saying "well, I don't like the idea of being white, and I have this little sliver of non-whiteness in me, so I'm going to claim non-white."

I am white.

What's the purpose of this thread beyond determining the race of those registered members that choose to reply?

I feel like VV is OVERWHELMINGLY white and male. This poll (in conjunction with the man/woman) is me trying to get some information which will help me better understand the dynamics of the board.

20% Cherokee, 60% Irish\Welsch, 20% other European. I'd say I'm white, I turn pasty in the winter but with enough sun I am a dark brown\red, no burning for me.

We have had one, but I can't think of the name.. I'm sicilian, so white. I would also like to be added to the list of people that is not even close to surprised.

Well, I knew plenty of minorities who played EQ on Veeshan. Given that this board comes straight from the EQ Veeshan population, isn't it possible that the demographics of the two communities are similar? Doesn't seem to be the case. I admit to being surprised that we haven't had any non-white votes yet-- I was expecting it to be 80-90%, similar to the gender poll.

The content of this board is facially race-neutral. The population that the membership of this board comes from was diverse. I think it's interesting that there is little/no minority representation on VV.

We don't have any more openly gay members, do we? Since Fesuni and 'Dar left? I think we have one openly lesbian member, but she's the only one I can think of.

I met lots of gays in EQ and lots of non-Americans. I don't think I knew any blacks. Same goes for WoW. The gay population in both was a bit odd. I don't have any gay friends in real life, but am friends with about 5 or 6 online.

I hate to be completely sterotypical, but if this were a Madden 2007 board, I think we would have a lot more color thrown our way. As an MMORPG offshoot, I don't believe it's a genre that attracts too many people that aren't white. I would throw RPG games in there too. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but it's far from the norm. You could also get into the whole socioeconomic debate about blacks and other minorities not having equal access to computers or high speed Internet connections like whites do.

You might very well be right. I mean, I'm sure you're at least somewhat right, I'm confident that there's underrepresentation of non-asian racial minorities in RPG's.

However, I can easily list a number of minority players from CT-- we had black players, asian players, hispanic players, gay players-- and I certainly didn't know the race of most of my guildmates. My EQ experience was much more diverse than my VV experience.

My father is VERY caucasion, and my mother is Japanese. I identify with my asian roots, although I don't speak Japanese. I do visit my family in Okinawa on occasion though, and love the culture, even if they are extremely ethnocentric. I'm mostly "white".

My mother in law was Japanese and my father in law is caucasion. My wife and her sister have many of the japanese traits, although my wife definately has more caucasion attributes. She's 6ft tall, but retaines both the black hair/brown eyes and skin tone of her mother. She has slanted eyes, but not anything like a stereotype. At times, she could look either american indian or latino if she wanted to.

So far, our daughter is a very intersting mix of the 2 of us. She has red hair, is white as a ghost, has big beautiful blue eyes (like me!), and is in the 99th percentile for length. She also has a slight slant to her eyes like her mother. I am very interested to see what she looks like later in life. I imagine she will be very beautiful and unique if these traits stay with her. One thing is for sure, she is going to be very tall!

I don't look asian at all, although I do have balck hair/brown eyes but no slant to my eyes. I have too much facial hair to pass for Japanese (Thanks Dad!). Since I hold a tan well, I look more mediterranian and a bit taller than the average asian.

My wife has brown hair and blue eyes, and we're expecting the birth of our first at the end of October. I'm anxious to see how he/she will look, and whether she'll have predominantly caucasian characteristics. Either way, I can't wait to meet him/her.

I've seen both Roots and the Shogun mini series. Just ask if you need to know anything about those people.

It would be nice to have a more diverse group involved with the VV boards. Our membership is extremely stagnant. With the Yahoo and Google bots that are on this board now, I'm surprised how often I search on Google and a link to a VeeshanVault thread pops up in the results. I'm sure we get our share of outsiders that take a look here. The spam problems have resulted in registration to VV requiring an email to the mods to join which I think is limiting the already small additions to the membership. I haven't had to do that anywhere else on the net so can't judge how willing people are to do that.

Is there an easy to add plug-in that requires you to type letters seen on an image to complete registration? That might stop spam bots while still allowing people to not have to send an email to a gmail address.

We could flame attack both a liberal message board (like this one!), a Young Republicans board (Seebs might know a good one!), and maybe a Cablinasian (Caucasian, Black, American-Indian, and Asian) board to fish for some new posters to flesh out the viewpoints for our threads.

There are plenty of ways around most of the image protection schemes out there.

I guess I'm white, but i never knew it until I started working in the technical field. Once upon a time I used to be olive complected. Turns out if you don't see the sun for about 4 years straight you get very very white.

I voted no because I'm a half-breed. My father is "white" my mother is "hispanic." (He's mostly German, she's mostly Chilean - like, from Chile) I don't consider myself white or hispanic, but both.. so I maybe should've picked neither but too late ;p
(p.s. I'm also still female - yay double minority!)

I voted 'yes' although for census purposes I'm white hispanic. My dad is Cuban and my mom is English - I'm first generation American on both sides.

Yes I'm living proof that your skin complexion can change when not exposed to sunlight for an extremely long period of time. I never knew I could be the color I was when I worked at Lucent until I started working there. Since then, I've started to see the sun a bit more and I'm not quite as pale, but I'm still far to lacking in the outdoor experience to be classed as anything other than "white" by people that didn't know me pre-Lucent.

White with a lot of American Indian bloodlines. Recently found out through some geneological research that Chaucer is my great x17 grandfather....so obviously a lot of nasty British blood in there too.

I'm mostly of Prussian descent (hey, thats what is was called back when my ancestors live there!). Also have some English in me and unfortunately a tiny bit of Irish. (see a red whisker every once in awhile)

Where did you get this nugget of wisdom? I'd always understood the etymology of the term "wetback" to have its origins in the crossing of the Rio Grande by migrant workers. That's what my grandmother's mexican boyfriend told me 25+ years ago, and it's also how the term is defined by every reputable source I know of. As far as I know, the term was rather common long before the comparatively recent arrival of Haitian and Cuban "boat people" refugees. The requisite border fences and walls necessary for fence jumping are also rather recent, relatively speaking.

I've never really understood why people care about this one. Sure, you're a Native American. However, I'm sure you also recognize that the term "Native American," as commonly used, refers to a real group of people, and you're not a member of this group. You can try to appropriate the term if you want, but the concept which the term refers to won't disappear, so you'll just have to call them something else. You can call yourself a Native American, but then you need to start calling Native Americans "Americans of Pre-Columbian American Ancestry" or some bullshit like that. Who cares?

I do, however, totally approve of the desire to identify yourself as an American instead of identifying yourself as Irish or Italian or whatever. For almost everybody born in America (especially those of us who are euromutts), their national identity as an American is far more significant than their identification with their country of ancestry.
