That's not entirely true. There are some games that won't work with the swap/flip method. Baldur's Gate comes to mind, as does Freedom Fighters. (I'm talking from experience with Swap Magic 2.0 - 3.0 was supposed to take care of this but I don't know if it's out yet). I think Hitman was another one that didn't work. The list is pretty limited, but there are games that won't work.

And yeah I definitely agree that the thought of a mod chip, or rather putting one in to a PS2 makes teh baby jesus cry.

Py - I don't doubt anything you're saying about the XBOX or the ease of hacking it compared to a PS2. I'll agree that it's easier, but not that the PS2 flip method isn't almost just as easy. And to answer your question, I believe I got my flip-top case for about $40 and it included the swap magic discs (one for DVD and one for CD games). Took me about 10 minutes to install it (I went slow when it came to the data cable that you have to connect/disconnect).

Don't fuck with me Siji! I'm the fucking fliptop master! As I said in my last post, a few games require a second swap. For Baldurs or Freedom fighters you simply save CDloader V7 All onto a second DVD and load it between DVD 2 swapdisk and the backed up game. No biggie. You just need a 2nd swap for a few games.

Here's a list:

It's kept up to date on any game requiring CDLoader 7

Thanks for the link! I hadn't heard about CDloader before, but then again I don't keep up with the PS2 forums and stuff anymore.

Oo, they don't have them yet on that site you had posted earlier in the thread.

Do I need to buy one of their swap magic discs or can I make my own?

You have to buy the swap magic disks so if you decided to get the fliptop (I purchased mine from the link in my last post) you should get the fliptop/magic swap disk combo.

That should run around 43.00 for the V1 PS2 top. The V1-3 run 10.00 more for some reason.

If you end up getting that combo, you can run any image of PS2 games or ripped PS2 games on CD that you happend to come across or copy from rented games.

I can put PS2 games on cdr? I don't have a DVD burner and that was my main reluctance.

The easiest way to copy PS2 games is burning an exact copy. There are some games that people have ripped to CDs. I don't know much about that though. I can't recommend you get this without the ability to burn DVDs. I'd wait until you can spring for the DVD burner which are coming way down in price these days.

PS2 had a $30 price drop as well. At least according to the latest Best Buy ad.

I did tech support for the XBox right before and during release...a co-worker and I figured out how to use DVD's without the kit...we made a big bonus when we showed the developer from Microsoft how to do it in order for them to fix it...

5 years later.. Xbox v1 nowhere to be found. PS2 still chugging along!

Anyway, just for the hell of it I picked up a PS2 since they're only $100. This was with the sole purpose of modding it, sorry! I'll probably go with the swappy thing as that seems the easiest method. I'd try a modchip but they seem hard to find in the US, and a lot of places outside the US wont ship here, plus I don't know anyone who can solder so yeah. Not many alternatives!

That might be because you can play your xbox games on your 360.

Nope. Don't think that has anything to do with it! Besides, the PS3 has backwards compatibility! Oh, wait...

Swap Magic works fairly well with the Slims. It's not really a big deal to do the swap. You do need to block the sensors though that tells the system the door has been opened. There is a switch kit but it's a bit fiddly and one of the pieces didn't really fit all that well for me. The only good thing is that it doesn't void your warranty. But on a $99 machine who really cares? I'd probably just open up the case and tape down the sensors if I was to do it again.

Anyway, final verdict: Swap Magic + PS2 Slim = Good! Obviously a mod chip would be better but for the less technical sort like me it can't really be beat for ease of use. And also keeps warranty in tact if that's important to you.

I had more fun soldering a mod chip into my ps2 slim than I did playing games on it. sold it.

I used the swap disc on the PS2. It wasn't the best but worked ok. Taking out spinning disks sometimes to swap. I think my PS2 still works! not even sure where it is.

I ahve 60GB PS3 in case for some unfortunate reason, I needed to play a PS2 game again. Only one I own (legit) is FFXII. It was way to jaggy on the HD screens.

edit: oops, own FFX as well.

I had issues with the Swap Magic disc (it doesn't snap in very well) so I moved on to Free MCBoot which is basically an exploit on a memory card. Using ESR you can launch backups without needing a swap disk. The only downside is you have to patch it before burning. I've been using rewritables though so that's not a big deal. This has been fixed in recent PS2 versions though (SCPH-90001) so with those the only solution is a modchip or Swap Magic. Just a tip in case anyone is thinking of buying one!

Anyway, if I knew it was so easy I probably would have got one awhile ago. Out of all the consoles I've tried the PS2 was one of the easiest to hack. I didn't even have to void the warranty! It's been keeping me entertained the past few weeks and the 'subpar' graphics (compared to latest gen consoles (with exception of the Wii)) don't bother me in the least. Then again I've always put gameplay over fancy graphics because I'm cool like that.

Having said that.. I haven't turned on the 360 in probably 2 months now.
