You cant call the people that died becasue of the heat "pussies". They're just old. And old people die from the heat. But christ, 14,000 people! That does show the complete ineptitude of the french government, and how completely pathetic they are in dealing with a problem.

You'd think after the first week of high heat and first round of deaths, the government would react. Dont they have any Emergency Units? National Guard? Red Cross/Red Crescent? Jesus! Anything? Dont they have weathermen or Doppler Radar? This was an easily predictable weather anomolly. They just sat and watched 14,000 countrymen drop dead because it was a little hot! Do they not have any plans to deal with natural catastrophies?

Fuck, here in Ohio, we try and prepare for everything, no matter how unlikely it is. Tornados, floods, draughts, hurricanes, heat waves, blizzards, ice storms, sub-zero temperatures. We even prepare for earthquakes! The only natural event I can think of that we dont have a plan to deal with is a fucking volcano. And France lets 14,000 people die because it gets hot for three weeks!

I dont care how you try to rationalize it. "It doesnt normally get that hot" "They dont have AC" "They were old" Bullshit! France is a fucking first world nation. The means to controls the temperature has been developed. Use it! Air Condition is fucking basic. And if youre in the business of caring for the elderly, i.e. hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities, then you better fucking have your facilities air conditioned. I dont care if you use it only once a year. It only takes one extremely hot day to kill an elderly person.

And Tanc, you fucking moron, if anything, this ordeal proves how inept their health system is. They dont even have the medical technology to deal with a heat wave!

The VAST MAJORITY were frail elderly people (probably kept alive by that world class healthcare system)

Obviously their health system is better. Just look at all the ederly that live in their society. This in itself proves the superiority of the french health system over all others in the world.

That is so fucking stupid its beyond belief. You want to know why there are more elderly french per capita, then elderly american per capita (if that is indeed the case)?
Ya see, while these frail elderly french were dying this month, their American counterparts, and their British counterparts died long ago on the beaches of Normandy. 60 years ago, when those frail elderly french were young men and women, they opened there arms and they opened there doors to Hitler and his Nazi's. Health System my ass. Its cowardice which allowed them to live so long. I rescind what I said earlier. Those french that died were pussies.

I'd agree with homer that the government could have responded better.

The rest of his post was way out to lunch. France waited 2 days to declare war on Germany and paid for it. The amount of disrespect I see from some americans towards France is irritaiting. France fell to Germany+Italy and endured an occupation while the US watched on TV\listened to radio for the next 2 years.

And we are all pussies compared to the iraqis. 50+ C (122+ F) with no power or water at times. Strange how we never hear of the deaths from the heat there.

The article I read mentioned the overnight temps and people dying. I understand old people dying. I still don't get thousands dying on a night we would celebtate here as a cooling trend. As Forthe mentioned, there's plenty of third world countries with no AC and hot temperatures.

My guess is they were doing something stupid like sucking down wine thinking they were rehydrating themselves.
