You can place a great deal of blame on the courts for this one. I suppose you could say that insurance companies have some responsibility re: less money given for preventive health issues, but the blame by far lies with lawyers and the continually rising civil awards. Also, doctors do bear some of this responsibility as well. Doctors do a terrible job of policing themselves. Medical review committees in hospitals and state appointed boards very often give far too much leniency to doctors for reasons of "professional courtesy" than anyone else would ever give. My wife is an ICU nurse and has given me a written list of doctors that she doesn't want working on her if she is unable to make that decision herself. It is common knowledge throughout hospitals which doctors are 'safer' than others.

My fiance got an operation down in seattle but it was largely cosmetic and certainly elective and he felt like going to a specialist.

It probably wasn't the best example, no. This was several years ago that I heard the report on people going down to like Buffalo for MRI's from the Southern Ontario area, because we didn't have enough facilities to meet the demand. Like I said tho, this was several years ago, could very well be different now.

Guess I had cheap insurance then because mine has always excluded things like wars, nuclear blasts, acts of God, etc.

But really, in a nuclear blast my car is the last thing I'd care about. Assuming I was still alive. And if I was still alive in an area that is suffering nuclear effefcts such as fallout I think I'd rather not be alive.

Actually, an MRI would be a perfect example. My daughter has MS (multiple sclerosis) She was diagnosed at 15, a pretty early age, just last year. Within hours they did an MRI, after a CAT scan ruled out an anuerism, and within 24 hours had rest of testing, spinal, etc.

Naturally, I contected all the websites about MS to inform myself quite soon after. According to people with MS or suspected MS even getting tests to diagnose this disease is a major hassle in socialised medecine type countries. Some of these people wait years for an MRI or any other procedure I would consider basic, just to be told they must wait years longer to begin treatment.

Thank God we have insurance and live in a country that does the research enabled by the evil Capitalist system, funded by such. She was put on Betaseron, within 2 months, which will help prevent future epicodes. Many of those I have contacted from other countries, particularly socialised medicine ones, IE: Britain/Canada wait years to even be diagnosed, let alone given preventative medicine.

However note where he says he got his information from people he had spoken to in other countries. It is common for people with an illness to exaggerate the circumstances surrounding the diagnosis and treatment. This does not make the individual stupid. It certainly does not make him a target for more of Kyoukans unique form of abuse either.

If I were suspected of having MS, I would be getting an MRI this afternoon, tomorrow at the latest.

I don't have any experience with canadian medicine, so I can't see this from both sides. From the U.S. side, the only thing you are going to wait months for are organ transplants and cosmetic surgery.

I can assure you my example of getting an MRI within a day is not an exagerration. The most annoying wait time for medical treatment here in the states is for lab work-ups on samples.

It really depends on the severity of the situation and the current backlog for MRIs.


I know my grandmother had an MRI done early last year and she waited less than a week.

In cases of emergency care MRI's CAT scans and the like are instant.
In cases of diagnosis, MS, Tumors, etc it can take weeks or in some cases months. Not only for the tests but also for treatment. The severity of the case is always a determining factor, however we do not have the access to these types of tests like the Americans do.

part of the reason is population density. MRI magnets and the like are of course cost prohibitive, and you cant just have them at every crossroads. i'm sure in the midwest of America where population densities approach those of Canada you have similar issues with scheduling delays on procedures like that.

As a parent and now a grandparent i would do everything in my power to save my child or my grandchild.. If it meant doing something illegal to do it.. I would... even if it meant my possible imprisonment or even death.

I am more appalled that the mistake was made on the first transplant then anything else about this situation.. I can understand a parents desperation to save their childs life.

I can not fault them for living where they do.. most people that I know anyways did not get a choice as to who their parents were nor where their parents lived when they were born..

In the end this WILL cost the average american citizen something.. someone WILL file a huge insurance claim to offset some of the cost of this botched case.. which will get passed down to the average person in the form of a higher insurance premium..

While i sympathize with the parents and am sorry for their loss.. i do not feel they should be entitled to any form of compensation from a lawsuit.. not being U.S. citizens and illegally smuggling your child into this country for an operation to me anyways invokes the phrase "You pays your money you takes your chances"

Now the extremists of this group will take that to mean that i feel they deserve less then professional care because they are not U.S. citizens.. simply no.. that means that if you commit an illegal act no matter how noble the intent you are not entitled to compensation when its botched..
