Since most of the cheap rice beer is 3.x%

Beer isn't Boonesfarm. Raise that by a %.

I believe normal "light" beers (bud light, miller lite, etc) are around 4.2 - 4.5%, whereas bud heavy and mgd/high life/etc. are 5.0-5.5%.

I know some states (particularly Oklahoma, and I thought some other bible belt states) sell weaker versions of the popular beers, and the alcohol content is required to be no higher than 3.2%.

Oklahoma convenience and grocery stores cannot sell beer or wine coolers with more than 3.2 percent alcohol. Big-name domestic breweries, including Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Coors, brew lower-point beer for the Sooner State and five others. Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and Utah also sell 3.2 beer.

Liquor stores in Oklahoma can sell beer with higher alcohol content, but they have more rules to follow. For one, they have to sell beer at room temperature. Also, liquor stores are allowed to be open only from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Found that after a quick search. Some of those other states listed may be different. Also, since they have to get it from the same distributers stores get it from, I'm guessing even if they are allowed to sell it it's easier just to get the 3.2 stuff.

Interesting. One of my best friends lives in Oklahoma City, and I swear he told me that when they want to buy beer, they drive to like Texas or something like that instead of getting the 3.2 variety. I can't imagine he'd do that if they could just go to a liquor store, maybe I misunderstood him.

That could be true! And I said since they still have to get it from a distributer maybe 3.2 is all the distributer carries since it makes things easier on them. So while liquor stores could legally sell it they probably just say screw it it's not worth the hassle.

It is the same way in the town in SW Kansas that I lived in. We never had to leave the state to get "real" beer though. The 3.2 crap was only in grocery stores. Liquor stores had the "hard" stuff.

In Minnesota, grocery stores do not carry alcohol for the most part (some do if you go way way out in the boonies) - and gas stations/convenience stores/corner stores etc can only sell 3.2. The only time I have drank it is when I have really really really wanted to drink and did not want to go to a bar, cause they can sell the 3.2 stuff up until 2 (same time the bars close).

You are correct sir, or close enough anyways. Where one point of confusion may lie is that the 4.2-4.5 is alc by volume...if you do alc by weight it's 3.6.

You are correct here as well sir. With one (and a half) exception(s). If it's on tap, it's regular strength. You can get full strength in a bottle at a bar or liquor store, it will have an 'OK+' label on the back of the bottle. All beer sold in grocery/convenience stores in OK is 3.2 though. I would assume there are hole in the wall bars/liquor stores that do not get distributorship for full strength, so that could add to confusion.

I think we need to help out the Iraq and the Iran in order to help the US Americans with maps to educate them about the hardships and share our maps. But lack of maps are definitely the reason.


On another note, I was in Austin a few weeks back and had a Shinerbock. Not too bad. Austin seems like a decent city too, but Texas is too f'ing hot.
