The drawback of course is that I'm always available, but the positive is that if I need to take my wife to the doctor to have Lasik surgery (tomorrow) I can still be productive while I'm waiting, I can still get important emails and respond to them when it isn't practical to be carrying around a laptop, and I can still surf the web at any time, use google talk, maps, gmail, all from something that fits in my pocket.
Bingo. It is amazingly nice as an IT person to be able to leave the laptop behind while still getting important emails from coworkers, notifications from the servers etc. Not to mention it kills tons of times while waiting in line, it is great to be able to check traffic reports, and I even find an use for the camera which I never thought I would. I keep seeing something amusing that I snap a quick picture of and send to people.

Every comment in this thread regarding concerns about battery life, cost, and cost of data plans is totally legitimate at present, but it's my expectation that Moore's Law will fix all that moving forward.
I agree with this as well. I don't necessarily think this item is the answer I am looking for. But I think it will push other companies to make new equipment as well. I am NOT a fan of Apple so will most likely not get this, but I can't wait to see what competitors will come up with in answer to the iPhone!

Oh and the Zune is complete crap.

I'd be really curious to see a poll asking whether people would choose an iPhone or some other phone if cost of the phone and the service were no object. If it integrated with my email, I'd choose the iPhone every time.

Edit: I just had another thought. How much does 3G really matter with a device that supports Wifi? Granted you'd have to hit a hotspot, but with a lot of cities, etc. rolling out WiMax solutions, lack of 3G could be somewhat less important.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Well, you wont always find hotspots though. If you're on a long drive (as a passenger.. no checking emails while driving! ;) ), out hiking or anything like that you wont have hotspots. Of course, can be argued how important it is with a fast connection then.. but I'm an addict so I want it!
