Barry was every bit as big of a weapon as Emmit, it's just harder to deploy that weapon when everyone's expecting it. The thing that makes Emmit have bigger numbers is his whole team. People say Barry didn't inspire people and whatnot, I disagree. He inspired a bunch of mediocre players to be a *decent* team for several of his years, in spite of having Scott Mitchell as our QB and cokehead Wayne Fontes as our coach. In the mid-late 90's (95? 97? I forget) the Lions had one of the most prolific passing offenses of all time, do you know why? Because on any play, Barry could run sideline-to-sideline 3 times and then break one for 80 yards, 15 seconds after getting the ball. When you're watching for that, receivers will be open and QBs will complete passes. Even if they are Scott Mitchell.
They're both great backs, and the arguing of if this and if that will never really get us anywhere; Barry is retired and Emmit is still playing. For my money though, I'd rather watch Barry play any day over watching Emmit, I always found him to be much more exciting.

I like Canadians. Just something about "Mounted Police" that...nevermind. Football. Why hasn't anyone rambled on and on about Jerome Bettis? Fine, I'll start...
Hey! Jerome Bettis was better than all of those others! This one time, he ran for 471 yards in one game. He's better than Emmitt. He's better than Sanders (Barry AND the Colonel)! His average yards per carry were like 17 and he gave all his money to sick children. If he were still playing today... Errr...

Barry Sanders > Emmit Smith
No contest. Barry didn't even seem to be into football that much but still owned defenses.
Bo Jackson is the closest challenger to Barry in pure ability.
Trivia: Which University did Barry Sanders play football for?
second tier RBs start with Emmit.

Barry Sanders started just one season for Oklahoma State and won the Heisman in 1988. He was drafted third in 1989 to play for Detroit: the only professional football team he would ever know.
Barry > All
