I think that it's hard for someone who doesn't have faith to understand how someone can have faith. I know that I don't understand it, and I wish that I could. You are right that none of us can, or ever will be able to, prove which of us is right. There might be a God, and I think that's great for you that you can believe and it helps you get through your day or the tough times in your life or whatever the benefit of your belief is.
I think what's hard for those of us that don't believe in God, whose existance cannot be proven or disproven, is when believers don't believe in scientific theories that have tons of evidence backing them up. That's what I struggle with. I will never say that it's a bad or stupid thing that you have faith, or that you're wrong about God existing. I will however say that it's asinine not to believe in Evolution or any number of other non-Church approved things that there are millions of pieces of evidence supporting.
I propose that at least some of the Bible is not actual dictation from God's mouth. Does that fit in line with your beliefs? To that end, I believe that some of it was written by man many years before we even had the limited understanding we did in the 1400s. In fact, we have seen things such as the geocentric solar system that were referred to in the Bible being disproved by science. If scientific theory can change over the years (I hesitate to use the term evolve), why can't interpretations of the Bible or of what God supposedly told the myriad writers of the Bible? Maybe He was misquoted. Maybe He used big words that were a little too advanced for the person who originally wrote them on the papyrus or for the first, second, third or 15th person who translated from the papyrus or the translations of the papyrus or the translation of the translation of the translation of the...
Basically, it's a frustrating argument because it's very easy for me to say (to anyone of any faith) "you could very well be right about there being a God, even though there isn't a shred of physical evidence to support it" while some of my beliefs that are based on evidence or phenomena that can be observed and measured are or have been considered heresy by said faiths. To say that some fantasy handed down via a holy book that was written and revised by countless men with countless agendas is in the same league as the body of scientific evidence that supports our current understanding of our origins is just asinine. Using that logic, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Roman, Indian, Norse, Native American, Chinese or Celtic creation myths have just as much credibility as the Abrahamic myths, which is just rediculous. Until they can provide substantial evidence to match that of our scientific understanding, made up myths do NOT stand on the same footing as science, regardless of what you choose to believe.

That sounds at least as reasonable as I would have hoped an argument from a religious perspective could be. I don't think we're ever going to be on exactly the same page, but I don't begrudge you for having faith. I'm not the type of person who can just believe something without seeing some evidence for myself, but perhaps I just haven't seen the same things that the believers have.

First, Mid you worded your statement extremely poorly. I interpreted it the same way Sylvus did, as would jsut about anyone with an average command of the english language.
Second, the bible was put together by a bunch of greek guys three centuries after the supposed death of Christ. It is a bunch of shit they made up, tossed in with a bunch of shit the jews made up, rewritten. Sadly, most of the stuff that was made up was actually stolen from Zoarastrianism, which predates even Judiasm, having its origins in ancient Sumeria. There are still Zoarastrian churches in the present day and age, incidentally. The only scientific value the bible has at all is that it has some refferences to historical events that were occuring back then that historians can occasionally cross reference. Outside of that, it is a self contradictory work of fiction, and a plaguristic one at that.
Third, "faith" is a willful mental delusion originally used as a tool by the smarter cavemen to control the stronger, but dumber ones. People hold superstitions when they cannot accept reality, mostly as it pertains to mortality and how insignificant our existance really is in the grand scheme of things. Its used as a tool to inflate ones self worth with a false sense of value and has invariably led to persecution and violence, thoughout history, up through the present. The ultimate irony is that every faith believes their views to be correct and mock each other, when ultimately all belief systems are equally rediculous and thrive on persecuting someone else. Honestly, how is the idea of golden discs from space any more ridiculous than women getting us ejected from paradise for eating one fucking piece of fruit? Wearing your delusion like a badge is your right, but the "flock" is never satisfied with fucking up their own lives, they always insist on imposing their superstition influenced standards on everyone else. Because of this shit, we killed all stem cell research and are now years behind the rest of the word in medical knowledge. No true scientist ever purports that what they believe is factual. The defining characteristic of science is narrowing down the number of possible explanations of a phenomenon to one. But even if we get to that one, we can't be sure that it's THE explanation, because there may have been others we didn't think to consider or didn't know about.
When people put forth evolution as fact, they're either a) not a scientist b) ignorant or c) both. That's a problem to me... bullshit abounds when people who don't understand science use it in arguments. And because their arguments are inherently weak based on their misunderstanding of science, they can be defeated. That defeat, in turn, makes people doubt science as a means to finding truth. This causal series is rampant in society, which sucks because we're not producing as many scientists as we need to. It's already a problem that there's no glamor in it, but when its public image goes from neutral to bad, the country suffers.

This is another thing I don't like. The notion that science believed that the earth was flat is as ignorant as believing that the earth is flat. It's church doctrine, and so is much of the "whole myriad of other incorrect theories." Religion is a much bigger source of misinformation than science could ever hope to be.
Further, scientific theories that have been debunked carry no weight in argumentation. Unlike religion, science actively tries to debunk its own theories. On the other hand, when one of religion's theories come into question, it just makes shit up to cover up the hole that someone poked in the veil. Oh, and the someone who poked the hole dies. So yeah, saying that science made us think the world was flat is not only false, but also faulty. Even if it were true, scientists were working hard to dispel all the shit spewed from the church for the previous thousand years. The first people who realized that the earth wasn't the center of the universe, thought that the sun was. Yeah they got it wrong too...but fuck if they weren't much closer to the truth than religion.
It's like religion hit science on the head with a club, put it in a coma for a millennium, and is now blaming it for being groggy when it woke up.

I don't know if I'd say 'vast,' but beyond that, absolutely. We have an incredibly educated and bright community here. We have smart people of all sorts, from academics (I know at least a few folks here have PhD's, and tons of others have advanced degrees of various sorts) to people who are really damn smart and have learned a ton through life experience (Xyun, Pherr, etc-- note that these people could have lots of education as well, I don't know life stories or anything). At times, this has led to some very insightful commentary and discussion. Sometimes, when something big happens in the news, the absolute BEST commentary that I'm able to find anywhere comes from VV. Honestly, this thread was probably a tipping point-- the chance to either let the mess just degenerate forever, or to stop the process and save it. Looks like we've collectively chosen the former. I'm not going to stop posting here or anything, but I'm not particularly hopeful about the chances of intelligent discussion continuing to come out of here.

Ever since Cart was banned, people have been taking breaks because of the crack down. VV seems to roll on no matter who comes or goes though.
Personally, I think a better strategy of dealing with an inability to deal with board issues to to just stop posting for awhile. Perhaps send a few PM posts to your inner circle group of VV pals, expressing your frustrations so they'll reply with a "feel good" PM in return, lifting your spirits in your time of need. A special announcement that you're leaving the board is not required. Very few people will care, no matter who you are.
It'd be nice if there was a little more tolerance on the board and I'm not talking about the mods. Sylvus was obviously bewitched by hidden forces to have made such a harsh decision on a board poster. One whose name pops up in every classic archive thread that resurfaces here. Bringing back Cart will restore the fung shui of the board and restore the delicate balance between screaming CAPS flames and funny one liners with the word "cunt" in them.

There is nothing wrong with someone showing their distaste for how things are here considering how much time most of us have put into these boards - if you are upset about something that you care even a little bit about, chances are you are going to make someone aware of it, whether they care or not.
