you dislike extremism and you support the most radical left winger we have had in office since jimmy carter? even his own party members are starting to serve notice to him because they KNOW they will be the ones out on their ass in 2010 if they follow with his wishes.

Obama is too fucking moderate, and I've said so all along. The only people that consider him a raging lefty are hard-line right wing idealogues that consider ANY position more progressive than their own to be Marxism. Like Miir said, no one with a brain expects him to change / undo all the damage that's been done to this country by economic right-wingers for the last 28 years from Reagan straight through W, and yes that includes Clinton who is essentially a globalist free marketeer. I certainly didn't, nor was I "duped" into voting for Obama. I voted for him because he was the candidate most closely matching my own political and economic preferences (and still nowhere close to my ideal). If he's 60% of my ideal, then all other viable candidates were less than 10%. I sure as hell wasn't likely to vote for any republican scumbag.

All things considered, I'm relatively pleased with how the first couple of months of his administration have gone. I'll take this over what his opposing party has given us, that's for sure.

Yes. I support the Obama administration. I think that if he keeps up what he is doing, he will easily win another term. If/when the economy turns around, I feel sorry for any republican that is put up against him.

Doing the exact opposite of what the previous administration did is kind of common sense. You need to reverse the bad decisions and undo as much as you can that got us to where we are today. The people that are upset the most are the people whose previous decisions have proven detrimental to this country when put into practice.

So far he is a good President. It will take much longer than 2 months to show how great he is, or isn't.

My praise is based on how he hit the ground running and hasn't slowed down. The speed at wich he has enacted his goals is astounding. I only hope he keeps going and doesn't get bogged down. So far, so good.

CALGARY, Alberta – Former President George W. Bush said he won't criticize President Barack Obama because Obama "deserves my silence," and said he plans to write a book about the 12 toughest decisions he made in office. Bush declined to critique the Obama administration Tuesday in his first speech since leaving office. Former Vice President Dick Cheney has said that Obama's decisions are threatening America's safety.

"I'm not going to spend my time criticizing him. There are plenty of critics in the arena," Bush said. "He deserves my silence."

Bush said he wants Obama to succeed and said it's important that he has that support. Talk-show host Rush Limbaugh has said he hoped Obama would fail.

"I love my country a lot more than I love politics," Bush said. "I think it is essential that he be helped in office."
People who want him to fail are just retards. No surprise Rush is one of those. Our country can't afford the president failing at this time regardless of who happened to win. If McCain had happened to win I'd have hoped he'd succeed as well. Nice to see Bush declining to get involved in those shenanigans.

I'm not impressed with Obama so far.
Poll shows Obama 2.0 less popular than the inaugural version

Apparently many Americans liked the Barack Obama they were so excited to see inaugurated eight weeks ago much more than the second version of the same man emerging with the rollout of his ambitious liberal legislative agenda.

A new poll of 1,308 Americans taken March 9-12 and published today by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press shows that for the first time the chief executive's approval dipped below 60% -- from 64% early last month to 59% now, while his disapproval rating jumped 65% from 17% to 26% in the same time frame.

I see you were too embarassed to link the source of that. Only a right-wing nutjob would say a 9 point raise in disapproval was a "65% jump". lol

A 9 percentage point swing would have lost him the White House in a landslisde the other direction.

The 'landslide' was determined by the number of electoral votes received.
A 9% swing would have put Obama at 317 and McCain at 221.

But feel free to put whatever right-wing spin you want on it... if it makes you feel better.

9% swing in voting would not equal 9% in electoral college votes. Thanks for playing though.

This should have been the Obama theme song!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

I have to give Obama props for his work ethic, the guy has an insane schedule.

I think Bush is as much of a fuckup as the next guy but I'm impressed with how he has handled himself during the transition and post inauguration. Cheney on the other hand has been an asshole.

True that the shooting rampages will definitely help this happen, or at least gain momentum. Not true that all (or even most) of the people that go on these rampages are "gun nuts". Sorry to take you guys fun away.

It has been really sad to see the tragic things like parents killing their children, shooting sprees, etc be more and more common in daily news worldwide in the past months. My girlfriend was just reading one to me last night about a husband who's wife disappeared, so him and his daughter used GPS to find her somehow and found her at this convenience store with another guy- she told him she was leaving and never coming back, and he went home and killed all of their kids (4 or 5 I think) one by one, then went back to the store he had seen her at and killed himself.

Aslanna was (I believe) referring to the guy who killed those 3 cops in Pittsburgh the other day. He was the defination a gun nut. He did what Kilmoll talks about, but will never have the balls to do. So much for trying to take down the government in order to keep your guns and ammo (fap fap fap)!

All these other shootings are just people who have immediate access to guns because guns are so awesome and keep private citizens safe except when they are being used on murderous rampages to kill children, cops, and innocent people.

Are the guns and the (legal) access to them really the issue? I think there is a larger issue at hand here, like I said above, society seems to be crumbling at a faster than normal pace, and there has to be some reason. I don't claim to know why, but I really don't think peoples legal access to firearms is really anywhere near the issue that some of you here make it out to be. I would assume that most of the gun related deaths are not by weapons that are/were purchased legally, it's just the higher profile white-america-gone-wrong type situations like you described above that get the media attention.

I could be totally wrong too, I'm not claiming to have the answers.

Anyway.. Back on topic..

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1178/polari ... l-historic
For all of his hopes about bipartisanship, Barack Obama has the most polarized early job approval ratings of any president in the past four decades. The 61-point partisan gap in opinions about Obama's job performance is the result of a combination of high Democratic ratings for the president -- 88% job approval among Democrats -- and relatively low approval ratings among Republicans (27%).

By comparison, there was a somewhat smaller 51-point partisan gap in views of George W. Bush's job performance in April 2001, a few months into his first term. At that time, Republican enthusiasm for Bush was comparable to how Democrats feel about Obama today, but there was substantially less criticism from members of the opposition party. Among Democrats, 36% approved of Bush's job performance in April 2001; that compares with a 27% job approval rating for Obama among Republicans today.

The partisan gap in Bill Clinton's early days was also substantially smaller than what Obama faces, largely because Democrats were less enthusiastic about Clinton. In early April 1993, 71% of Democrats approved of Clinton's job performance, which is 17 points lower than Obama's current job approval among Democrats. Republican ratings of Clinton at that point (26%) are comparable to their current ratings of Obama today (27%).

The growing partisan divide in presidential approval ratings is part of a long-term trend. Going back in time, partisanship was far less evident in the early job approval ratings for both Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon. In fact, a majority of Republicans (56%) approved of Carter's job performance in late March 1977, and a majority of Democrats (55%) approved of Nixon's performance at a comparable point in his first term.

Funk: society's not devolving as much as advances in communications make us more aware of what is happening all over. We have abilities in that regard that blow away what we had even a decade ago.

Gun control vs sprees: we've beat that one around multiple times in multiple threads. IMO restrictions won't stop the sprees (people are always going to go nuts and kill others) but they may cut down on the single homicides and other crimes. Contrast the murder and violent crime rates with parts of Canada and their corresponding areas of the US, and you do see a difference.

Obama's popularity: omfg will people (yes YOU Winnow!!!) let the poor fucker get into the job before they try to boot him out? You just had 8 years of bad gov't, don't you think it behooves you to try the alternative for a little more than 60 days before you write it off? Shit that took years to develop doesn't get fixed over night. And no, your politicians aren't any different than anyone else's (case in point: 6 weeks after our last federal elections, opposition parties were already threatening to topple our minority parliament and head to the polls or replace it with a coalition).

Recession. People get stressed, scared, panicked, and then snap. I would expect a rough summer.

Front page of CNN: (I linked perm article though)

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/07/ ... index.html
(CNN) -- "Who controls the past controls the future."

It's a line from George Orwell's novel "1984." But it could also serve as the rallying cry for two groups battling over President Obama's ambitious domestic agenda -- and the legacy of two former presidents.

Critics of Obama's proposed $3.5 trillion federal budget say he's poised to jeopardize the economic gains unleashed by President Reagan.

They say he will make the same mistakes that President Lyndon B. Johnson did when he committed massive amounts of federal money to create a slew of anti-poverty programs dubbed "The Great Society."

"The Great Society created a lot of programs and wasted a lot of money," said Kenneth Khachigian, a former Reagan speechwriter and adviser. "The biggest war on poverty was the economic boom started by Reagan."

Well, the trouble with giving money out is you create rampant inflation...

I haven't read his budget, but it is possible to have social programs that have a deflationary effect; socialised medicine combined with more money to get people into medical school, and an increase in skilled migration of medical staff, and degree matching/bridging with other countries, for example.

Oh, and Reagan was a douche.

QFT. Add in the budget cuts that police departments are going through right now and you have serious issues. A 25 year officer of the Toledo police department advised in an interview for citizens to "invest in guns and precious metals....brass, lead, and powder".

My guess is we will see a huge spike in homicides this year and probably be into 1970's numbers for crime.

I don't know that I necessarily see budget cuts for police departments as a bad thing. I have no idea of the law enforcement situations of other states, I'm just speaking about what I see locally.

The police departments in most of the suburbs here are overstaffed as hell. I can drive through the city I currently live in (Hopkins) on any given day and within ten minutes see 10+ different cop cars driving around, and Hopkins is a small city (Takes maybe 10 minutes to drive across it).

If the police have the employees to set up 6 car speed traps in a city that size, they have too many employees. I see this same issue in all of the suburbs around here.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for having police force be abundant in cities (especially in inner city precincts), but that's because those cops will be kept plenty busy doing things other than handing out speeding tickets.

That "things are going to hell, invest in guns, ammo and gold" attitude is precisely what drives sprees like this. Crazed paranoia + guns = murder.

We don't have to eliminate the guns, but it'd be a great idea to eliminate the crazed paranoia.

obviously that cop is an economics expert.

btw, there a multi-billion program in the American Recovery and Relief Act (the stimulus package) designed to help economically disadvantaged police departments. It's actually the revival of the COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) grant that will completely pay the salaries of new-hire officers for 3 years. The old COPS grant was cut after 9-11 and transferred to Homeland Security and built border fences!
