Sorry, are you trying to deny that element of the game exists, or are you just being an idiot again?

No, it's you taking something that is meant to be satire about pop culture and turning it into some massive political message that aims to insult and mock 90% of the people that paid for the game.Nick wrote:Sorry, are you trying to deny that element of the game exists, or are you just being an idiot again?
You don't seem to understand that your opinion of something isn't necessarily the way it is, or in this case your opinion isn't necessarily what they were trying to say.

Ok, You're right. Rockstar made a game that insults the country that all of their employees live in, and that almost everyone who pays their salaries live in. Americans are stupid, and Rockstar made it their mission to use their most popular franchise to reiterate this to the world.Nick wrote:Yeah, ok, whatever man. You're deluded.

Back on topic, I disagree that: planes, gyms, or buyable properties are valuable additions to the game and I am fine with them not being present in GTA4.
Planes would just be fun to fly around in for a few minutes, they would add nothing of substance to the game, so there is nothing inexcusable about their omission.
Gyms did what, allowed you to watch your character bulk up? This added what to the game (hint: nothing)? I can see how this would matter for people that hang out at gyms and like to show off how buff they are (similar to the most obnoxious person in the game so far, brucie) but beyond that I'm not sure why it matters.
And buyable houses are the same.. you spend nearly zero time in them so I just don't see it mattering. Also I don't see why there not being garages matters, the spot outside your apt works the same way, has just as much space, and fits the theme of the game much better (not too many people in NYC have a garage, in case you didn't know.)
I like the social aspect, making friends and getting them to like you more. I think it all ties together and helps with character development, which is a large part of why the story in this game is so enthralling.
I still can't agree with everyone not liking the soundtrack.. I think it's fine.
It's no wonder games never get a 10, people seem to think that if every detail down to the mortar in between the bricks of building isn't perfectly replicated and rendered that it's a let down.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
Ah hell, the airplane mission in GTA3 was enough for me to not finish the game. Glad those are not around!
As far as gyms, buyable property and garages.... well:
Don't care
Would forget location
I wreck cars. I find a car, go as fast as I can and launch it towards a crowd and/or group of cars in order to achieve maximum wreckage. This is what I do. Garages would be cool to launch off of though.
Soundtrack--are you able to stream MP3s via wireless network? I have the 360 connected to my network already. I have not looked at docs though. It would be cool since I am not really into the default soundtrack.

The awesome part is, they make fun of Ireland with pedestrians talking shit about the Irish in certain parts of town. Anyone that talks shit on the street about the US gets the bat to the head!
Re: GTA IV Trailer
This story is OK. I thought the part about Second Life was funny. Never too old to game!

A 70-year-old's Take on GTA IV
My Dad has been visiting since late last month and his arrival happened to have coincided with the arrival of another important thing in my life (these days): Grand Theft Auto IV.
Dad was, at one time in his life, quite a gamer. He introduced me to the glory of Donkey Kong on the TRS-80 (or was it the CoCo), looking as delighted as I was when he first loaded the game up with a tape player and sat me down to play it on a bulky keyboard.
His was the first computer upon which I ever played a flight sim, some early military flight sim on an 8088, I think. We played countless games of Doom together, logged hours of strategy gaming, but as gaming become more complex and my interests in console gaming slowly evolved our gaming lives drifted apart.
He tried to stay by my side, or the side of my avatar. He bought an Xbox, we played plenty of Ghost Recon together, but the speed of the game and his slowing reflexes, the caustic nature of online gamesmanship and Live chat slowly wore him down until he retreated from the Xbox to, of all places, Second Life.
It's there that I still find him, almost nightly, when I call, or when I walk down the stairs to say good night these recent weeks.
But something changed when GTA arrived. Maybe it was all of the time he heard me talking about it, the interviews, working on the stories, the reviews. Maybe it was one last attempt by him to reach out to me, to find that old connection of games. But he was intrigued, so I sat him down in front of the television and booted up the Playstation 3. Handing him the controller, a controller he had never seen, let alone held, I walk from the room.
That first day passes quietly and quickly. Me upstairs working, him downstairs playing. He slowly works through the game's controls, quickly grasping the concepts, but not so quickly perfecting the movements.
After his first day in Grand Theft Auto IV his only comment is on the driving: It just doesn't feel right.
It's the thumbsticks, I tell him, he's not used to such small movements. He grunts his agreement.
The next day he watches me for hours as I play online, shooting and getting shot, in endless matches of GTA multiplayer.
It looks just like every other game I've ever seen, he says. How's it different.
It isn't, not really. It's like baseball, or maybe watching a rally race: The field, the track, the players change, but the same basic rules of the game never do. What happens within those rules between the beginning and the end of each match is what makes it worth doing.
His second day on the game is much longer, he plays it well into the night, the morning I suspect. He's starting to get it, I can see it in his pale blue eyes, his red-rimmed pale blue eyes. He's starting to like it.
I catch him the next day, after another marathon session, talking to my step-dad, who is also visiting the house with my mom. He's trying to explain to him what's so fun about the game, how it's different, but not really. Sure it's another game, but it has such detail, so many little things worth seeing.
My step-dad is intrigued too. His interest lasts about ten minutes before it turns to boredom, and he falls asleep next to my dad... who sits by my side as I zip through a handful of missions on the Xbox 360.
After another day of gaming my dad is asking me about consoles, specifically about the Playstation 3. How much is it? He wants to know. Which one should I get? He asks. Why a PS3, why not an Xbox 360? I ask. I had an Xbox, he says, I want to see what the Playstation is like this time around.
His addiction, now seems full blown. He laughs as he works his way through the missions, gets the jokes, likes the humor found in the dialog, the radio stations, the advertisements. I even catch him laughing at Weasel News, despite his affinity for the real world's Fox News.
I asked him this morning what he thought of the game, is it enjoyable? Enjoyable, he says, isn't the right word. It's interesting... challenging. I like the graphics, the animation is amazing, but the story is what keeps me playing. I just can't beat some of the missions and that gets frustrating.
He's still, he says, thinking of buying a Playstation 3 and if he does it will be just to play this game.
Grand Theft Auto IV has found an unexpected fan in my father, a man who once gave up on games because they felt as if they had left him behind. Despite it's roots in hardcore gaming, I've come to realize that GTA can be every bit as attractive to casual gamers, to the Second Life set as it is to those who live and breath 360 and PS3.
Now to work on getting dad back online.

Only 2 complaints.
1. Shitty soundtrack
2. Even if I et the brightness to max, and contrast to max, I can never read my text messages from where I sit. I have to go up to my tv to read it.
Everything else is great about this game. The driving takes some getting used too. The story is just awesome. I love Brucie.

One thing I noticed about the soundtrack: The songs listed in the manual are not all of the songs which were included. Don't they normally list all of them?Lynks wrote:Only 2 complaints.

Text: This has caused me problems as well. It goes along with my earlier comments about having some kind of prompt when the text is on-screen when you are involved in other activities (especially driving).

in regards to the small phone text, i'm pretty sure you can increase the font size somewhere in the phone menu. i dont have the problem since I play point blank range on a computer monitor, but I remember seeing the option while messing around in there

On the last mission now, but im not going to do it until i have tied up loads of other loose ends. The game's amazing, but far too short imo. Especially compared to San Andreas. I hope this doesn't develop into a trend for GTA.
Re: GTA IV Trailer
How many game hours do you have played so far (without having tied up loose ends yet) and how many hours do you think you'll play the multiplayer? Take that number, divide it by 60 (or however many euro units you paid) and adjust your cheap meter accordingly.Nick wrote:On the last mission now, but im not going to do it until i have tied up loads of other loose ends. I still haven't beaten San Andreas yet. I've been playing that game off and on for well over 2 years.

I played that game for around 3 hours. The horrible driving and weapon aiming turned me off pretty quick.Spang wrote:I still haven't beaten San Andreas yet. I've been playing that game off and on for well over 2 years.

It is going to become a trend, they stated that they felt (partially based on user input) that San Andreas was too big/long which was the reason that this one got shortened.Nick wrote:On the last mission now, but im not going to do it until i have tied up loads of other loose ends. I agree with their decision personally, between all the side shit and the main quests san andreas was far too long for my liking, I didn't ever finish the game, and the same went for a lot of other people I knew that played it.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
I haven't really played GTA IV in a while. I'm so close to beating several other games that I'm kind of going back to finish those off. I've bought 20 games since Christmas, and I really need to concentrate on one at a time. I think Crackdown is the one I'm most addicted to at the momment and the one I'm likely to finish. I'll take a break and come back to GTA after a couple of other games to get the sandbox taste out of my mouth.

The only thing that really bugs me about this game is the same thing that really bugged me about GTA:SA : the fucking camera. It's way too low, it bounces back around 0.3 seconds after you readjust it and it makes speedy car chases a crapshoot because you can't look very far ahead. Pisses me the fuck off...argh.

I'm curious as to when you're supposed to use the cinema camera mode. As cool as it is, it's useless as you can't use it and hope to be able to drive around at the same time. If they included a way to record a mission, using the Cinema mode to replay it would rock.

I would just like to say that whoever came up with the idea to make the mechanic of cars (and the fact that it's almost impossible to roll them) the way that it is, just to make one achievement that should be a gimme challenging, should lose their job and never be hired again by anyone in the video game industry. Yes, I'm serious.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
Pardon but I'm resurrecting an old thread to talk about the episodes or the package known as Episodes from Liberty Stories.
The Lost and Damned:
You follow a member of a biker group called The Lost. The stories and characters in both episodes are more interesting than Niko's story. Both stories also cross-section into the main story every now and again to see how events played out from different angles. There wern't many new mechanics in TLAD from retail GTA4 but they refined motorcycle handling quite a bit and you wern't as prone to falling off the bike as you were with Niko anymore. I thought Johnny handled cars rather poorly. They felt even more sloppy than in GTA4 when I was forced to use them over bikes to get away from stuff.
The last mission in this one is quite memorable. Some easy achievements here too. Nothing retarded and all single player.
The Ballad of Gay Tony:
They put in a bunch of new stuff here. Every Mission has a score at the end of it for how you performed. This adds an interesting element of challenge to it. They all have a time goal, Player damage goal, some of them you can't damage the car etc. It won't fail the mission of you don't meet the target and after you finish the game, you can replay any mission through the phone interface to try and meet all your targets.
The main protagonist, Luis Lopez is probably the less interesting character of the story. You play an standard GTA-style strong arm and business partner to the flamboyant "Gay Tony" Tony Prince. You're a partner in the night club business and you co-own 2 clubs.
There are dancing minigames, skydiving events where you base jump off stuff and aim for targets in the street, truck flatbeds or jump out of helicopters.
There's a bunch of missions in this one are really over the top and fun to play. The only aggravation so far have been helicopter battles but I thing there's only 2 instances of that(that I've run into so far and it wasn't horrible). I'm in the middle of this one still and I have about 6 hours of play time.
Frankly the episodes together probably make a better GTA experience than GTA4 did. If you disliked GTA4 because of the gameplay, then it's probably a good idea to skip this one. If you hated 4 because of the characters, then at least give Episodes from Liberty City a spin in rental form. Both of them are well-crafted episodes that will make you laugh.
At the moment everything here is 360-only.

Total time for the main game and each expansion please!
I've moved this game much higher on my backlog prioriety list and would like some idea of the time commitment required. Also, how do I get to the new episodes from GTA? Do I have to beat the original first before I have the option? I bought mine via DLC.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
I'd say plan for probably plan for 30-40 hours for the main story and somewhere around 7-15 for each expansion depending on how much you enjoy going around and doing secondary objectives.
I bought the expansions and started the game, I asked me if I wanted to play that expansion. You don't need to finish the main game to play the expansions. Simply start up the game, that will load up your last saved game. If you just downloaded the new expansion through DLC, it'll detect that and ask you if you want to play it.
If you want to play another story, simply load up your latest saved file from that story (by hitting start and going to the game menu) or you can choose New Game and choose which one you want to play directly.
Or if you haven't bought any of the DLC online and traded away GTA4, Episodes from Liberty City allows you to play both without you needing to have bought the original game. You just don't have access to Niko's story with this package.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
Bump!
This thread is kind of hilarious. Not only was Miir a committed Sony apologist from the start, he was also still wrong! Also, I make a point of saying how I do not like strategy guides, and I was basically coming here today to post how great the strategy guide has been to have while playing this game
I only use it for certian things, but the guide has helped me through a couple of frustrating spots. I'm not sure I'm going to kill all the flying rats, but when I see one I kill it and mark it off my map just in case. If I'm 20 minutes into a really long mission, I'll pick up the guide and see how much longer it is and also what I have to do so that I don't fail and have to repeat everything from the start.
I'm around 20ish hours into the game right now. I eventually got really sucked into the story. The city is so alive that it's like a character itself. Very, very cool stuff.
My original complaints are still valid, but I would like to add a couple more. Failing a mission and having to start all the fucking way over is the worst feature about the game. I understand this is corrected with mid-mission checkpoints in both of the expansions. Next, the controls, much like in past GTA games, can be pretty wonky. I've hailed a cab and walked over to it and pulled the driver out instead of geting in the back seat. Of course, a cop sees me and I have to outrun him and start looking for another cab if I want to get to my next location faster. I also had a mission where I ran a guy down on a motorcyle and we both wrecked. I went to shoot him and because of the location of the bike, my guy kept getting on and off the bike instead. The bad guy just walked over and shot me in the face
What is weird to me is that I've played the entire game so far and haven't even had the desire to run around like a jack-ass killing everyone and blowing shit up. That's either a compliment to the story or a sign that I'm growing up! I do plan on going crazy later, but the story comes first!
It's still not a 10/10 IMO, but I'd be willing to bump it up to an 8.5 and possibly even a 9.
I've heard that both of the expansions are much better than the original game so I really look forward to playing those. My goal is to finish GTA4, then Alan Wake, then I'll start Red Dead Redemption. I will revisit Liberty City soon though. I really want to see more of this world.
This thread is kind of hilarious. Not only was Miir a committed Sony apologist from the start, he was also still wrong! Also, I make a point of saying how I do not like strategy guides, and I was basically coming here today to post how great the strategy guide has been to have while playing this game

What the fuck are you talking about? Not only was Miir a committed Sony apologist from the start, he was also still wrong!
I made like 2 posts in this thread.
I still think game looks equally shitty on both the 360 and the PS3.
The only GTA game I could actually tolerate was Chinatown Wars.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
Not sure about in 2007 but these days anyone who pays $8 a month for Live, when it can regularly be had for ~$3 a month, is a dumbo. Or living in a third-world country. Some people really need to get over that it's not really a big deal. Especially when Sony is trying to figure out ways to charge for online features as well.miir wrote:At least PS3 players don't have to pay $8 (monthly) like Xbox players have to pay for Live.

Rockstar intentionally made the two versions look as identical as possible.
That included lowering the resolution and AA on the PS3 version to lower it down to 360 quality.
That was the line that got me smiling

Oh well, hindsight and all that.

So you're trying to say they intentionally made the PS3 version look worse?Fairweather Pure wrote: That was the line that got me smiling![]()

Having played GTAIV on both 360 and PS3, the PS3 blows in comparison. It's too dark and the controller is ass for any sort of driving game.

Re: GTA IV Trailer
Yeah i read some good stuff about the GTA-series.
Will probably try GTA San Andreas and GTA 4 next year or so.
This year it'll be all Red Dead Redemption though! (with some UFC 2010 and EA MMA)

I want to see Kwon get through the entire Red Dead Redemption game using only his fists to beat down the bad guys!

Re: GTA IV Trailer
30 hours in and I'm bugged out. After completing 3 missions, UL Paper is suppossed to call me and give me the location of "Someone Special". I answered the phone and got hit my a car at the same time so the call never started or had a chance to give me the cutscene to call Roman and offically start the mission. Guess what? The dude never calls back either. I'm just in limbo. I only had that mission and the finale to go. Oh well. I was really looking forward to getting 100+ achievement score. That was 30 hours of gaming with no conclusion.
