MPs pass bill limiting political donations

OTTAWA - It took months of debate and some last-minute compromises, but Jean Chrétien's bill to radically change political financing easily passed the House of Commons Wednesday.
I've never been a fan of the Liberals but I give mad props for this move (assuming there aren't huge loopholes).
The bill is considered one of Chrétien's pet projects. He has said the changes are needed to counter a public perception that big donations buy political influence.
lol perception.

Yeah I don't get this bill either. The liberals are the biggest contribution whores in the country. They actually pushed tax law through that gives you a bigger rebate donating to a political party than you would get donating to a charity.
I think its probably just further evidence of Cretien absolutely fucking up the political landscape in this country as much as he can so he can retire and sit back to steeple his fingers and laugh manically at Paul Martin trying to fix everything.
As a compromise, Chrétien amended the bill last week to boost the amount each party will receive from public coffers. The subsidy from taxpayers works out to $1.75 for every vote a party received in the previous election, up from $1.50.
The only reason I can see for the Liberals wanting this made law, is that they know with the current state of Canadian politics (i.e. most of the left and center voting Liberal and the right split with Alliance and the Conservatives) no one else is going to be able to amass enough in contributions to challenge the advantage that the votes in the previous election gave them in base funding.
