Word of the Week (5/27/03): Malapropism

Post by Xouqoa »

malapropism \mal-uh-PROP-iz-uhm\, noun:

The usually unintentionally humorous misuse of a word, especially by confusion with one of similar sound; also, an example of such misuse.

(Sorry it's late, I didn't get in from Atlanta until 8pm last night and didn't feel like doing anything on a computer after 8 hours in a car! :P)

The amount of people using malapropisms on this board is at often times quite mind blowing.

The introduction of the Maiden's Eye zone brought a very much enjoyed malapropism to many ears.

It's hard to use in a sentence but using this part of the definition:

especially by confusion with one of similar sound; also, an example of such misuse.
my favorite malapropisms by far are the ones including song lyrics -

'Werewolves of thunder' by Warren Zevon
'Rock and roll all night and part of every day' by Kiss
'Mideival woman' by ELO
'Bathroom on the right' by Creedence Clearwater Revival
'Big old jet had a light on' by Steve Miller
'Momma dance' by Phish (though being Phish they decided to call the song that, but they are really saying 'the moment ends.' They embraced their audiences malapropism.)

I have no idea how to use the word malapropism in a sentance. If I had photopaint I could make a sig with just that word in it and use lense flair. God forbid I put a women in it however.

Referring to Spangaloid as Mongoloid is a less common malapropism than one would think.

All of spang's malapropisms are marked in bold text for your viewing pleasure. Do not confuse typos with malapropisms.

On its etymology, it came from a character in Sheridan's The Rivals, Mrs Malaprop (1775). Sheridan used the French mal a propos, meaning inappropriate, to come up with his character's name, and yes she was guilty of using words incorrectly.
