did this ashcroft fella invent it so he could arrest anyone facing mecca during this festival? :)

That's a joke. A small one, granted, but a joke nonetheless.

I don't see any praying going on this thread. I have my eye on you, pagan.

National Day of Prayer has been around since the First Continental Congress, or so was said on the news this morning (no, not Fox News either). I had never heard of it either.

This should not be an official holiday. In a way, it trys to put religion in the faces of atheist and some agnostics as well, opposing the freedom of religion imho

Oh, I say let them have it. If it keeps the idiots out of my hair for even 5 minutes, its worth a holiday.

If it's a holiday, I want the day off.

I take it if we get rid of this, because of it's unconstitutionality (based on its bias towards a or several forms of religion) then we need to get rid of the aformentioned references to religion and god from stuff like the national anthem, don't you think?

Definitely a violation of separation of church and state.

There is no separation of church and state really, how can there be when the President himself claims to do the work of God and says he prays for guidance in his decissions?

He certainly has the right to ask whatever help he likes making decisions. When those decisions apply religious standards or icons to public life there is a problem.

I don't care if he consults Tarot before every cabinet meeting. When he tries to get a law passed proclaiming Tarot day for everyone, that's a violation of separation.

Why does it bother you? It's not a Federal Holiday so you don't get the day off. If you don't beleive in God then you don't pray. So why does it bother you?

I assume that wanting to protect ALL Americans rights that you would agree that Christians and Jews and Muslims (or any person that prays)have a right to their own "Day" for Prayer if they want it. Or are you suggesting that because it offends you that their rights should be taken away?

I would think if you were a atheist or agnostics you wouldn't care because you know what you do or don't believe in. If this being a day to bring people of faiths together for one large happy prayer day bothers you then maybe you have issues with what you believe or not, maybe your not confident in your feelings of there not being a God. Maybe your one of those people that say "Today I want to party, tomorrow I will be saved" and feel scared because when you die you might find out there is a God and you blew it.

As long as someone is not telling you to rock and chant some prayer and you better be in chruch, temple or mosque or you will be beat or killed then why do you care what people of Faith believe or how they worship?

Didn't Regan use astrology? I thought I remeber that being an issue back in the day. Let Dubya pray all he wants. I just hope he starts praying for our economy a bit more, dog knows I am.

Religion is silly. I have no problems with a national silly day.

LOL National Silly Day! I want one of those! :D

Yeah, supposedly it was Nancy who consulted an astrologist and then gave Ronnie advice based on it, from what I recall. Got a lot of flack for it, but I don't see it as any big deal. At least he wasn't a fundamentalist Christian...
