When in doubt, follow the money

Wow, someone's going to making OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of bling after this whole Iraq thing is over...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Print/0,3858,4623333,00.html

Look! It's going to be Cheney! I can hardly contain my shock. The SEC has been investigating Halliburton Oil for questianable accounting practices since 2002. Its accountant, Aurther Anderson, overstated $100 millon in revenue. Oh, by the way, Dick Cheney was CEO for the period in question.

I'm sure it's all just an amazing co-inky-dink.

Always remember to follow the money. Draw your own conclusions, not the conclusions others explain to you.

When he left Halliburton in 2000 to become George Bush's running mate, he opted not to receive his leaving payment in a lump sum but instead have it paid to him over five years, possibly for tax reasons.
Mr Cheney sold most of his Halliburton shares when he left the company, but retained stock options worth about $8m. He arranged to pay any profits to charity.
Cheney isn't going to make shit.

Also:
Wendy Hall, said: "We have been working as a government contractor since the 1940s. Since this time, KBR has become the premier provider of logistics and support services to all branches of the military."
Halliburton has been a government contractor for 60 years. What makes this so special?

So you don't try to help out people you know or are affiliated with? Overstating earnings is happening all the time, not necessarily because of bad accounting practices, but stiffer regulations. Remember to vote next election and you can have a Dem in the Oval office.

not when you work for the government, no you don't try to hook people up.

wait that is the main purpose fo the government, hooking up the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for the people involved, nevermind.

but on a more realistic slant, my main problem with the process was that the bidding info is all classified. i have a big problem with that. Additionally, no UK firms got to bid on any portions of these contracts, and the amount of political capital Blair has risked should get them a piece of the pie. I'm sure they will have a seat at the table when all is said and done, though.

if the bidding process was transparent, then there would be no reason for people to suspect any inproprieties were taking place.

edit: NYC comptroller seeks probe on Haliburton and GE due to dealings with Iran and Syria, companies that have state-supported terrorisim. Haliburton does so through a Cayman Islands subsidiary, which circumvents the legislation.

Instead of arguing specifics maybe you should be more concerned over politicians outside interests and conflicts between those and the job they're supposed to be doing on behalf of your people?

The UK has a ways to go but we've made decent inroads to political sleaze in recent years especially on the "government contracts to politicians' companies" front.

As I understand it the US government is currently refusing to allow anyone (including the UN) to have a part in rebuilding and administering post-war Iraq.

And you have a problem with that? The US,British and Australia should all have a hand in Rebuilding Iraq.

Only for the duration that he's vice president. After that it's back to the bling. Plus he gets to write it off on his income taxes and he is already a very, very rich man.

Because it is clearly a conflict of interest. He didn't sever ties completely with the corporation and will almost definately be back there when he's done sitting behind w. bush looking smug. I don't think you quite understand how much of a boy's club Bush's cabinet is. More than a few of them have enormous ties with huge corporations that routinely get the best defense contracts around.

Do you really think that it is fair that the company who's been paying hte vice president and former director of the department of defense getting all the sweetest deals and government contracts?

But guess what, the world sees thru it, and that is OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of fuel to add to the anti-american fire. Once again our leaders show the world contempt, once again the radicals have things to hang up as proof of the evil american empire. Once again more examples of doing the right thing the WRONG assed way.

Another reason I pointed this out is that it's just the beginning. Don't tell me that I'm the only one who noticed an extreme lack of information in regards to what the US intentions will be after we topple Saddam's regime. It's one of the main reasons I am against the war. Now that we are engaged, we're getting little tiny bits of information here and there. Only after the war is over will people start to piece together what is going on right now. Don't kid yourself. There's a shitload of smiles and handshaking going on in Washington right now.

Also, Pherr is dead on in his post. It really dosen't matter what you or I think about Halliburton getting the contract. However, it's icing on the hate cake in the Middle East.
