MSSQL Server Trial / Enterprise Manager

Post by Xouqoa »

I need either the MSSQL Server Trial version or just a download for Enterprise Manager but I can't seem to find either. MS took the server trial down due to the recent worm that was going around, but I need to just for Enterprise Manager. Does anyone know where I can get that from, or another program that will allow me to administer SQL Databases remotely?

Vey true, you'll be much more effective with a GUI if you learn the command line. You can write very efficient scripts to automate just about anything, including stuff you can't do via a GUI.

You can do a MySQL build on a cheapo linux box to play with scripts and such. You'd be amazed at how much better it performs too. MS-SQL is a bloated pig, I won't even start on the OS :P

Well, I don't mind mySQL but we have MS-SQL on our work server so that's what I use. =) I just haven't had time to learn command line stuff just yet.

I have used mySQL in the past and it is pretty cool. MSSQL is so much easier to use though and the UI makes admin a snap. I would never use MySQL in my work environment although I have used it for some small websites at home.

Of course I would take either over that piece of shit Oracle any day.

I like Oracle, Sybase is good too. Depending on your DBAs are either is great. MS is just too expensive to operate on a small scale, and can't handle big stuff due to the hardware platform.

We had Oracle running on a cluster of Sun E4000s last I dealt with it, I can't remember the transaction rate, but we kept a pair of T3 lines running at a 60-70% load with just SNMP traffic :)

I've used ORACLE for the SQL engine for our IVR systems for some time. Since those are so old, command line isn't just the way to go, it is your only option ;)

My hosting company for my web site has mysql running on it, but doesn't give us shell access so I cannot command-line that.

If you have a web server running on that box that has your database, and it has php installed as well, look into this: http://www.phpmyadmin.net/ It turns your web page into a web-based-gui of sorts, that still has the power to let you do command line stuff. I use it to administer my database previously mentioned.

Just copy it off the work server!

The tools for SQL server are all freestanding. Same goes for ISQL/w etc. For remoteing in prolly also need the network part to give a server name to IP relationship, esp if you have port 1434 blocked after the recent worm
