EQ Bandwidth problems

Post by Neziroth »

Yeah so the reason I quit EQ last year was because of my shitty 28,800 connection. And yeah it's all thats available where I live so don't tell me to get cable

So on to the question: Sony claims they've made changes to this so that it should run well for everyone now, and I was wondering if any fellow dialup players out there can vouch for this. Before I couldn't raid with much over 35, depending on the zone without falling way back in time, followed by either dying or going LD - which stopped my char progress dead in its tracks.

Any info would be great.

Even if cable and DSL is not available where you are, ISDN should be, and is worth looking into. Additionally, there have been advancements made in DSL technology, and you should look into iDSL.

I don't know that playing on 28,800 would work, but 56k always played fine for me before I had DSL.

ISDN was crazy expensive when I had it, compared to cable. If you can't get Cable or DSL you might look into a Satellite connection. I think Ishtanna has/had one and if I remember correctly it wasn't much more expensive than Cable/DSL.

i'm in the same boat.. i live 15 miles from the city.. dial up is it.. i can get ISDN but at 80 bucks a month to the phone company and then 60-70 to the ISP.. no thanks..

The cable company recently ran cable to our subdivision, however they have no plans to actually activate it anytime soon.. the only reason they ran it was because the gas company was running new gaslines out so the trenching was going to be done already so they shared the costs and ran both..

the new DSL technology is still not available in my area or we still live to far out.. haven't checked that in a while..

satellite is ass for games... latency is terrible and during peak times 2000ms ping is not uncommon..

Dial up works fine.

As for a 28.8k connection, there are two things that could be holding you that low.

1. The modems of your provider. If they can't do better, find a new one. Stay the hell away from the nationals like AoL and get a local provider if at all possible.

2. The condition of your phone line. Talk to your phone company, tell them you use your phone line for data transmissions from work and are having problems with such a low speed. Bug them about it until they give you an answer as to why it's so low.

50k is easily achievable on dial up, even when you are knocking the cow crud off your boots before walking into your office to get in some EQ time.

Yeah we've looked into about everything.

DSL and Cable are unavailable
ISDN is just too expensive to consider, games are fun but not worth paying out the ass for
Satellite is the same way, something like $90/month through directv, and i've also heard it sucks for games.

It's dialup all the way, and the shitty phonelines we have way out here in the country (thus no DSL) are limiting my 56k hardware modem to 28,800

As for bitching to the phone company, we've done it, they won't do anything. They come out and look at the lines, say "Yea that sure is a shitty phoneline but it works and we're only required to provide 16,800 connections" or something like that...

Sorry, bud... no offense meant, just trying to be funny. :)

I did come up with a real idea at lunch. If you can sport for a second modem, and a second dial-up line, you can trunk the lines together and use the aggregate bandwidth.

If not, I really do think you're screwed. :(

Might have to have two different ISP though. None of em I have talked to will support multi-homing anymore.

I did this awhile back.. and while it worked... line quality was poor enough that the 2nd line to connect always connected at 28800 so it really didn't help much and wasn;t worth the extra line cost and ISP charges..

if my house was about 50 feet higher above sea level i would be able to see my ISP's wireless tower.. alas there is a small hill between my house and it..

Us rural folk just don't have much options.. but then i have OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of nice things to make up for it.. peace and quiet, no polution etc etc.

56k through a good ISP is sufficient to play EQ.

i had earthlink DSL a couple years ago (for a month), and it sucked so hard, i dialed up through another ISP, and the connection was good enough to lead raids in zones that were laggy (at that time) like Chardok and the Hole.

just try a different ISP.
