Dicks!Sony Music is sending warning letters to more than 700 artificial intelligence developers and music streaming services globally in the latest salvo in the music industry’s battle against tech groups ripping off artists.
The Sony Music letter, which has been seen by the Financial Times, expressly prohibits AI developers from using its music—which includes artists such as Harry Styles, Adele and Beyoncé—and opts out of any text and data mining of any of its content for any purposes such as training, developing or commercializing any AI system.
Sony Music is sending the letter to companies developing AI systems including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Suno, and Udio, according to those close to the group.
The world’s second-largest music group is also sending separate letters to streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple, asking them to adopt “best practice” measures to protect artists and songwriters and their music from scraping, mining and training by AI developers without consent or compensation. It has asked them to update their terms of service, making it clear that mining and training on its content is not permitted.
Sony Music declined to comment further.
Sony is so protective of their shit. They should have just signed an agreement like Reddit just did with OpenAI to allow their data to be used for training.
Sony's music assets will be used anyway and now they won't make any money. The writing is on the wall. Traditional copyright laws just don't work in the new AI age. It would be just like Sony to cling to their shit until they are no longer relevant.
Whiney emo artists, actors, musicians and so many more non emo occupations are going to be out of jobs or paid a lot less soon. It's a good thing. When I look at clueless celebrities trying to get political on social media, thinking they somehow know anything other than their trade skill, and are experts because they are famous, it sickens me. The lack of huge celebrities that try and influence going away will be a huge positive of AI replacing them. Look at Biden rolling out has-beens George Clooney and Julia Roberts to try and raise funds. Both parties are guilty of it but democrats much more due to the liberal losers that make up the Hollywood crowd.
Quality AI audio will eventually be able to be produced locally/open source. There isn't a thing in the world that will stop it, along with images, videos etc. There is absolutely no stopping AI's fast progress. If you want to fight for anything, fight for Open Source AI to not get regulated into the ground. The way things are going, you'll eventually be thrown in jail for having an uncensored LLM as if it were illegal porn or something and be stuck having every single thing you do be monitored by big companies and the cloud.
The Smart companies (Microsoft) have already embraced AI full force. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with Japanese business culture but Sony's greedy walled garden asshattness isn't going to fly anymore. (Apple has like a trillion in cash to lawyer up so they can get away with it). Sony seems easy to beat down, based off Steam protests, and their bad decisions taking away linux etc on the PS bringing the wrath of the hackers.
Sony's brainwashing of its walled garden users reminds me a lot of Apple. Sony uses commercials that play on emotions like that "For Michael (character in a bar with game characters talking about who saved them)" type commercials that have jack shit to do with product and stupid flute playing, orchestra playing E3 events. They'd copyright crab-hands if they could and sue any other gamers that got got cramps in their hands.
This isn't a pro Microsoft stance. It's more pure anti Sony. Even Mark Zuckerburg/Facebook/Meta has changed dramatically (and not overnight but slowly) and really is the only positive force in VR and they are releasing open source LLMs that compete with the close sourced models. Microsoft/Facebook have at least done some good things mixed in with the evil. Sony is just bad news from start to finish. Never once can think of "Wow Sony did something out of consideration for the little guy!". I hope they crash and burn.
