I used the dragon head glitch after my first play through for the same reason. After that I beat the piss out of anyone that invaded me, cause it seemed like most of the people glitches their characters to level up and never learned how to actually play the game.

I basically used my starting gear leveled up the whole game. I used havels armor for the four kings fight but that was it. Shield wise I pretty much always used a maxed out hollow soldiers shield.

I haven't read up on what they changed, but I'm glad I got everything done before it got changed.
