Re: In Bruges
I tried watching this the other day and fell asleep. Not because the movie sucked, I was just really tired.
All I know is that it was fairly funny in the first hour that I saw, but it progressed really slow. I'm told by everyone that has seen it that the ending makes the entire movie. Will watch again soon!

Re: In Bruges
Started this two nights ago, watched about 30 minutes of it before deciding I was completely bored out of my brain and didn't care how the rest of it might be. That and Collin Farrel is a talentless dweeb.
Re: In Bruges
Tbh, it probably isn't aimed at the "American" end of the market.
Still, it remains a fantastic film.

Re: In Bruges
I'm "American" and I liked it. How can you not like a movie that has midgets dwarves getting karate chopped in the neck?
I'm not sure I'd classify it as slow-paced unless you have the attention span of a gnat. Or ADD. Or a gnat with ADD. Or just don't happen to like character-driven movies. Sure there's no high-speed car chases or a bunch of shit exploding but there's nothing wrong with that. It's a good film with solid dialog and performances. Not a bad writing / directorial feature debut for Martin McDonagh. I didn't really have a problem with Farrell either. He's been in some crappy movies (Phone Booth anyone?) but I wouldn't call him talentless and I think he did a good job here.
To be honest though the ending didn't really come as a surprise. I was wrong on some of the details about how it got to that point but overall I saw it coming just based on things that happened earlier so for me it wasn't as powerful as it could have been. According to some of the things I read that was probably intentional to tie back into the 'fairy tale' aspect that was a recurring theme. Regardless I'll have to deduct a point for that!
Still a solid movie and worth seeing. I'm sure it's better than most of the other crap that will be coming out this year.

Re: In Bruges
I agree with what you are saying, but my experiences with Colin Farrell are the following (in chronological order of movie release):Aslanna wrote:I didn't really have a problem with Farrell either. Phone Booth (sucked)
The Recruit (sucked, but don't really recall it)
Daredevil (sucked, had no idea Farrell was Bullseye, not really his fault)
SWAT (sucked)
Alexander (really sucked)
Miami Vice (sucked)
In all those movies above, I did not think Farrell did a particularly good job acting, and in some of them he was terrible (Alexander). Has he been in any other good movies, other than In Bruges?
Also, what is the movie about? So far I know that there is character development, the film is a comedy, the ending is a surprise that really ties everything together.
Oh, I forgot the Colin Farrell sex tape, he was pretty good in that!

Re: In Bruges
How does someone who's been in so many awful movies still manage to get paid such a ridiculous amount of money?

Eh, I usually lock whichever one has the least activity when I notice there are multiple threads. I could have merged them, but that's more work.

Re: In Bruges
Oh I know, it definitely made more sense locking that way. So why was this movie any good? I read a bit of a plot outline for it and it seemed pretty dull to me. I realize I'm American so maybe my mind can't wrap itself around what makes this a good story, but then I also think the summary I read might have been retarded.

Re: In Bruges
Will let you know if it ever shows up. It has been at the top of my Netflix queue for a while now.
Re: In Bruges
If it sounds dull to you then you probably wont like it. To try and tell what's good about it would be a pointless exercise. Watch it yourself and make up your own mind.

I'm sorry you were born American and the fortune of a brain and thus live with the global assumption that you're a moron, especially when you aren't, but that's not really my fault fucko, so get over it.Zamtuk wrote:You really are that dense, aren't you?Nick wrote:Tbh, it probably isn't aimed at the "American" end of the market.
Cinematically and comedically, the film is a fantastic debut for the director. The truth is, it's merely a little indie film at heart, not a massive blockbuster aimed at your general moron (or "american" as I...somewhat accurately put it, although its not specific in its intent, except partially in terms of its viewing audience (OH NOS)).
Anyone who puts "on Raglan Road" in a film is, by default a total legend.
Glad to see Aslanna liked it
Sometimes the best films are those without a clear plot. (I know...totally surprising....it requires a brain or a degree of acquired taste. Compare it to say...the music of Nelly versus that of Jimi Hendrix and you'll get a taste of what the film is like (i/e Jimi Hendrix quality, not shitty Nelly)Psyloche wrote:Oh I know, it definitely made more sense locking that way. Re: In Bruges
I've never watched a Lethal Weapon movie, a Terminator movie, a Die Hard movie, a Rambo movie, a Steven Seagal movie, a Jet Li movie, or a movie about a meteor crashing into earth. I've also only seen one superhero movie since Michael Keaton was Batman.
I'd rather watch an artsy-fartsy indie flick.

Re: In Bruges
For some reason I expected some kind of Americanesque crime-thriller (didn't really read anything about it), and the first few minutes of the movie make you think its going to go in that direction, but I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was a character drama. I really enjoyed it. It's a thoughtful film with lots of subtle humor. Normally Colin Farrell turns me off, but he was great in this flick.

We watched this last night, and really enjoyed it. I know I'm late to the party, but I just wanted to give my two cents!

Enjoyed this a lot. I love the actor who played Ken. He also was in 28 Days Later as well as Gangs of New York.

Re: In Bruges
I mentioned this in the best of 08 thread, but hadn't commented on it's 'official' thread.
I own this film and have watched it probably 20 times since I first saw it in theaters. It just gets better and better with age and I love sharing it with anyone who had missed it. All of my friends from the "American end of the market" enjoyed it along with me. Oddly enough, the only group that didn't like it was some of my girlfriends' au pair buddies from...Europe.

Re: In Bruges
we saw this a while back and enjoyed it, but i think my bf did so more than i. i found i was terribly distracted by colin farrell's eyebrows, which were all over the place. i swear they can move 2 inches up his forehead when he does his surprised expressions.
Re: In Bruges
I watched this again today. I agree on the eyebrows. They were bordering on distracting.
