Is it better, as good, or worse than The Day After Tomorrow?
Re: -=* 2 0 1 2 *=-
I was more curious about the significance of RUSH 2112 being exactly 100 years after 2012. Someone knows something.

Less plausible than Day After Tomorrow, with worse acting (yes, worse).
Both sucked vomitpewps though.

I just watched 2012 yesterday. Sure it isn't plausible. Big deal. It kept me entertained. Definitly worth the illegal rip of the dvd.

What is everyone doing to prepare?
I'm stocked up on toilet paper and may not have to ever buy another roll in my lifetime. After, at first, underestimating the affects of Del Taco and using TP as kleenex, I am confident my supply will last through 2012.
I'm next considering stocking up on my final purchase of drinking straws.
What has everyone else done so far?

Although I don't really buy into the 2012 stuff, I am using it as an excuse and reminder to make myself more prepared for disasters that could throw things into chaos. Twice now in 2 years we have been without power for extended periods (4 days+) and have seen the massive issues that could be caused by anything that knocked the power grid offline for more than a week or two. Let me ask you this.....what would you do if you had no way to keep your food refrigerated or have clean drinking water? If power was completely out in a region for as little as a month, there would be massive amounts of deaths because people are not prepared.Winnow wrote:What is everyone doing to prepare?

I have been working on it slowly, but have some essentials now and working to build it up as best as I can. So far I have or plan to have the following:
Generator - this was a big purchase but saved us hundreds in food. Can plug it into the house to run simple appliances as well if you are talking shorter term outages.
Gas - about 10 gallons to run said generator or as spare for vehicle if pumps in the area do not work with extended outage.
Water - roughly 10 gallons stored right now for use as drinking water if city pumps are affected
Dry food - some non-perishables stored separate to get by for a while if needed
Batteries - shit tons and still not enough. Trust me when I say that if there is an emergency you will NOT be able to buy batteries anywhere in a 100 mile radius.
Flashlights, lanterns - simple things that you never realize you don't have in working order until it is too late
Water filter - just picked up a portable water purifying filter that can be used to pull water from any source. I can filter 200 gallons from mud puddles and have clear clean water if it came to that.
In addition, I have made up what they call a "bug out bag" for myself and each family member. Basically it is pure essentials for getting by for 72 hours if there was some type of catastrophy that required getting away instantly and without warning. My next goal is to get a small bag as a "get home bag" that will have some basics in it if I need to get home after something happens and would have to walk.
I hope I never ever have to test any of these, but I have a pretty strong suspicion that we will see some type of major regional outage in the next 15 or so years. It sure does not hurt anyone to prepare as a just in case.

Solid list. Don't forget about ammo and solid cleaning kit, but you already have that covered I imagine.

Well, the first thing you don't want to do is let your neighbors know you're that prepared or they'll be coming for your stuff.
The most essential thing you need is water. I've had my water out for less than a day and it's annoying as hell. Gotta move from toilet to toilet that still has water it it to do your #2.
The big question is...at what point do you start filling up empty water bottles with pee?

Ha, you guys call yourselves prepared...
You need at least this much food!
Probably want a couple of these too.

Anyone in a major metropolitan area is basically fucked. There is no way you can stockple long enough for the masses of starving gangbangers and other assorted nutjobs to weed themselves out. Water and food would be immediate problems. Basically, I am resigned to the fact that living in Orange County, that if civilization goes tits up, my wife and I would likely be dead inside a week from looters and other hazards. The midwest is another story, with lots of self sustaining small towns that are well armed and have natural resources to draw on.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

In the 1980's I took an interest in survivalist books, etc. I never actually did anything but read up on it. There are so many factors that you can't prepare for, it's really hard to gauge how successful your preparations would be. Small things, like, say a tooth that needs a root canal, become huge, painful issues post civilization. An abscess tooth for example, could end up killing you which would normally be easily treated.
Of course, an excellent Fiction book to read about this sort of thing is Lucifer's Hammer by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven.

Re: -=* 2 0 1 2 *=-
That is probably one of the best post apoc books ever written, actually. I'm pretty sure canabalism would hit the LA area in about two week's time. I read somewhere rescently that the entire LA area has roughly enough food to sustain the population for roughly 4 days time, if shipping it in were to suddenly stop. Think about how ugly things would get when you toss in a lack of potable water in the middle of the fucking desert...

Yesterday I bought more toilet paper at Costco. My estimates look to be perfect as it appeared my Tp would run out the end of this week but i didn't want to risk being without TP over the weekend!
