So I'd been using a variety of low power laptops and netbooks for the last little while. While the portability is nice, the low power and small work area finally got to me a few weeks ago and I asked my boss if I could get a new, regular laptop.
Well it was approved and I ordered myself a Lenovo L412.
The thing isn't a gaming machine nor is it meant to be. My first thought when I opened it up was "Holy shit this thing is thick".
It's packing a Core i3, Intel Integrated chipset and a measly 2GB of RAM (Reminds me, I need to see if I can get that upgraded). It's a standard, middle of the line business machine.
As soon as turned the thing on and started using it however I was amazed. It's so fast compared to netbooks I had convinced myself was acceptable performance and the nice, full size keyboard and trackpad are so much more confortable that I now wonder what I did without. It's also whisper quiet. I literrally cannot hear the thing. Even under heavy load the fan never spins up. I guess the "chunkiness" that I was bothered with at the beginning gives the components enough room to adequetly move out heat.
I'm never going back to Netbooks. Anything under a 12" screen DIAF as far as I'm concerned.

The Lenovos are ok for business use. I'm supposed to get one since technically IBM doesn't like its employees to use their own gear while working remotely. I did take a look at their more powerful models, since we get a fairly good discount on them. However, it seemed even with employee discount, I could do better with ASUS. I'll take one for work though!

Those fucking thinkpads just won't fucking die, either. I dug up this old ass T41 with a 1.6 GHz processor from the warehouse, upgraded it to 1.5 GB of RAM, and loaded a fresh copy of XP, and it runs outlook, hyperterminal and putty real nice. I wouldn't try to do anything TOO demanding, but as my 3rd desk machine/portable terminal, it's decent. It's actually quite thin and light, especially considering its age.

Running 7 on a T42 and it's actually not too bad.
Also have a T410 and though I don't use it much, it's a really nice laptop. It's lacking a lot of the bells and whistles of a more consumer oriented laptop but it's reliable and sturdy.

My T60 held up very well, no complaints at all.
No PCMIA on the T410, how am I supposed to use my token ring card! Help desk didn't find that amusing.
Running 7 home on my netbook, does just fine, comparable to Ubuntu mostly for what I do with it,

I think I'd suggest you just sit closer to the other person in the world that wants to use token ring and pass notes.Aabidano wrote:My T60 held up very well, no complaints at all.

Hadn't used it in years, TR was decent enough if implemented properly. I've even got the SC adaptor for it
