Type of caulking for bathroom baseboard?

Post by Canelek »

I've got what I believe is travertine flooring in my bathroom, but it may be some other type of tile... baseboards are wood, with ~ 1/8 inch gap between...

I'd like to seal that gap and think shoe molding may be a bit excessive.

I'm thinking that caulking would be my best bet. So, any tips on type of caulk (paintable, clear, etc), application technique and finishing?

Thanks!

I would slap a quarter round on there. Cheap and looks better IMO. You can get it in all sorts of different materials to blend all your different floor elements.

Looks good, but I was more concerned with flooding like if the crapper overflowed. And there is light unevenness in the floor hence the gap. Something to think about though thanks!

Then I would use a clear sealer first and then cover it with the quarter round. Well, I can't see what you have first hand, but based on your description that's what I would do! Quarter round is simple to work with and will provide a more finished look.

Latex caulk is going to take paint better, but I am with Fairweather on 1/4 round or shoe being the best bet. If you seal the moulding with paint, then it provides some protection if you get it wet. Latex caulk is going to dry out over time and crack/peel etc. If you are really concerned with moisture, you can get shoe moldings that are made of a synthetic material that they use in basements and such.

Hmm. I guess it would be eaasy enough to replace the quater-round if there was some damage. I am not overly concerned with flooding, yet.

I need a nail gun for that? pewpewpewpewpew!

Penny nails will do the trick just fine. You could also slap a quarter round on the top for a better finish too.

Quarter round on the bottom, cove on top. You don't NEED a nail gun, but you are a guy. In a pinch, you can use something along the lines of 4d or 6d finish nails and use another nail to seat them below the surface of the wood. If it is being painted, paint it before you put it on, then putty over the heads of the nails and touch up afterwards. It is important that you apply liberal doses of beer during painting, but AFTER cutting them to size.

I've heard they also make excellent cat training devices!

Thanks for all the advice! Most of this shit is new to me, or it has been a while. May require a forum, lol.

Pergola/patio cover building, basement finishing, etc... good times :D

Building a patio cover may be a call a contractor project. Anything that requires a building permit it is best leave to the pros. A good chunk of basements can be done on your own if you have any skillz at all with a hammer. The biggest thing about doing a basement is to make sure to soundproof it good so they can't hear the screams. FWIW, the best soundproofing material out there is R13 fiberglass insulation.

For the basement, I need to draw the dimensions and send it off to my ste-dad to design. Before I can do anything, I need the design, especially for light cans and other wiring.

I'm leaving the rock n' mud to the pros. Fuck that cheese!

For the pergola/cover, I know some people....

First up though, central AC! I may be able to get a deal.
