DVD burning

So say I have a DVD burner bought 50 DVD+R discks for $100...

Then I put them in and it pretends I stuck a beer coaster in there...it doesn't know wtf to do..

I assume DVD-R and DVD+R are different now, I think I remember reading about that a while back but then I thought we standardized this shit....

So I guess I'm screwed?

theres no difference between DVD-R and DVD+R but there single sided single layer, single sided double layer, double sided single layer, and double sided double layer...

Records at different wavelengths of the laser. A DVD-R drive will not write to DVD+R media, and vice versa.

There are still 2 DVD media standards for the home pc - only drive I know of that supports everything out there atm is the Sony DRU-500A

DVD-R/RW - DVD+R/RW - DVD-RAM - CD-R/RW

Retails $350 or less if you search around the net.

I have this drive and after the latest firmware patch it will accept just about any brand of DVD media....even the cheapo stuff. Great DVD recorder.

DVD+R DVD+RW is a faster burn although the media is slightly more expensive. The price for DVD+R should drop rapidly over the next few months when 4X disks (which the DRU-500A is capable of burning at) are released.

Anyway...It's DVD-R, I have DVD+R media =/

I bought it from another company, not OEM but they didn't include the manuals, they gave me different software that was listed in this package and only one blank disk...with no markings on it at all...just a blank white disk in a clear case....

That's what was causing all my confusion, why I couldn't get my DVD to burn properly at first and such....and now why I couldn't burn again...oh well....kylere, kilmoll, homercles, ravven, corona, anyone else in cincy have a DVD+R recorder? I guess I have some extra disks....but I'm not gonna drive them anywhere or ship them or anything, someone would have to come near the cincy airport to pick them up.

Otherwise I have 50 drink coasters.

Yeah, DVD is still a little confusing if you don't do the research. They bought some +RW drives here at work and tried with +R media. Didn't work so well. Then they got +RW media which wrote fine but you could only read with the burners (or other +RW drives) and not the DVD-Rom drives in the laptops.

All in all that Sony looks to be the best bet for compatibility until one standard comes out of the mess. Assuming it ever does.

I managed to get one of the Sony DRU-500A (god, you have no idea how hard they are to get) and have been happily burning movies of late. Its also pretty sweet to be able to back up 4.38 GB onto a single disc.

If you plan on doing serious DVD authoring (video, not data), you might want to check out Jim Taylor's DVD Demystified book. Its pretty much one of the top authorities on what DVD is, without spending the $5,000 and signing and NDA to look at the official spec.

The combo drives like the Sony are really nice since they support all the major formats (even writes CD-R at 24x...yes, slower than straight burners, but hey). Just makes sure you know what you're getting when it comes to media.

Bulk lots of DVD media seems to come pretty cheap these days but that has a downside of *OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS* of variance in the quality. I've been using (on a friends recommendation) Ritek media as well as Verbatim's white label. Its only 2x stuff but still, it only takes 30 minutes to burn a full disc. Expect much better when the 4x comes out.

Well crap now after reading some shit I'm scared even if I copy a movie or game for back-up purposes I won't be able to play it on my other computers or in my DVD player (the one on my TV or the Playstation...yes I know copied playstation games won't work...without modifications to the PS2)
