Windows 7 question

This seems so fundemental but...
Some software is saying that I need admin rights to use/install. Even EQ2 is doing this to me.
How is this rectified? It's really fustrating as it has been a source of me being unable to use a decent chunk of my old software.

This is why I hate getting new tech as much as I love getting it

This will hook you up, including disabling UAC, which is causing you issues.

From what I saw today, it's a profile corruption. If you made a new user the issue would go away, or disabling UAC will do the trick as Cane said.

Another question... How the hell do you edit the Start menu? For example I want to create a new folder to group certain stuff and then move existing Start items into it. This was easily done in XP but I'm not seeing a way in Windows 7. If you do Open on Start>All Programs you can edit some stuff directly but some stuff is not shown because it was (presumably) installed for all users rather than the specific account I am logged in with. And if you try opening Start Menu folder under All Users it gives you access denied. I can't even drag and drop items in Start>All Programs.

Why does Windows 7 suck so much? Some of the changes to the UI make no sense at all.

Click Start, right click on All Programs, select Open All Users. Edit to your heart's content.

Thanks. Although even that's not as easy as it could be if you have items in both place so you have to do that and do Open then move between the two. Regardless, I found Classic Shell which is a much better solution. Yay fucking drag and drop within the start menu itself the way god intended!

Yeah I actually like Windows 7. There is nothing I can't get to in like 2 or 3 clicks, so additional organization seems unnecessary to me.

And your experience is complaining about changes, when you can still do what you used to do but it takes an extra click or two maybe. It just gets old listening to people be resistant of changes in Windows, etc just because it's change, and not because it's actually bad.

Windows 7 rocks. I had issues when I first started using it but 6+ months later it all made sense and is better than XP.

Even with Win 7 being a better OS, it still takes time to get used to it.

Wrong. I was complaining (asking, really) about how to do something I was no longer able to do. The point is I couldn't do what I used to do which is drag and drop within the Start menu itself. Change is fine. However some of the changes in Windows 7, for me, are not fine. If you don't like listening to it too bad it doesn't matter to me either way. Actually I prefer it if it does bother you so continue on.

Oh, and here's another one. How do you rename something and have it highlight both the filename and the extension at the same time? Oh wait.. From what I can discern you can't (but would be happy to be proved wrong). Sure, one can hit shift-end and voila! But.. Uh.. Why should I have to? Why isn't that an option to automatically select the whole thing? This is not a complaint about change being bad it's a complaint about certain changes being stupid and unnecessary.

Oh and how do I get rid of that stupid waste of pixels properties pane at the bottom of windows explorer?

That's easy! Use Directory Opus! I haven't used a window file manager in...hell, I can't remember the last time I used one.

To be fair, I wasn't singling you out. You are far from the only one, particularly here, that I would lump into the aforementioned category.

I like Windows 7, despite the usual, "hay guys, let's move menu items and features around!!1!". They do the same silly shit with Windows Server 2008. Once you get used to it, however, it is ok.

On a slightly related issue, SQL Server 2008 and SSRS 2008 are rad.

This is assuming that you have extenstions displayed and not hidden?

Yes, that's what I meant. And it is a problem to me!

Another problem: When viewing media files how do you disable the screen saver from kicking in? This is already set in the power options but it doesn't seem to be taking affect. Which is annoying since it makes the application crash due to the video driver no longer responding. I am using a 32 bit viewer (BS Player) if that makes any difference. It worked fine under XP without having to set anything. As long as I had a media player running the screen saver would be disabled. Short term solution is I'm just going to bump the screen saving to 60 minutes instead of 30. Maybe longer since I occassionally watch a movie. Thanks Windows 7 for making me use more electricity than I was using under XP!

Maybe 'screen saver' was the wrong wording. Power save is more what I am talking about. I don't have a screen saver specified I have it set to put the monitor into standby mode or whatever it's called after so many minutes. Under XP if I was watching a movie or a program this would not happen. I can't seem to replicate that in Windows 7 even though, under the power options, it's set properly from what I can tell. I am not at home at the moment so don't recall the exact options.

The BS player thing cropped up back in the Vista days and the devs passed the buck over to Microsoft, declaring the issue Fixed.

I use VLC with 7 and don't have that problem - it's when i'm watching stuff on tv websites that it kicks off and pisses me off.

I am running Vista on my two machines, and I think that the only time I have had the monitor go into power saving mode was when I was watching something on Hulu. I don't remember it when using Windows Media Center, which is what I use most of the time. I also tend to run that in windowed mode while doing something else on the computer, so it has been a while since it would have had the chance to be idle.

I'll try another player and see what happens. I am pretty used to BS Player so if it is with that I'll just disable the power saving features for the monitor altogether and turn off the monitor manually whenever I leave.

Update: I turned off power saving and just manually turn off the monitor when I'll be gone awhile. Problem solved! I should switch from BSPlayer though just because of the answer they gave in that thread claiming it was an OS big and marking it Fixed.

Still enjoying Classic Shell it makes working with the start bar thingie much easier. Other than that Win7 isn't bad once I turned it into XP as much as I could.
