You are foolish to have given them that much extra money. Had you put that grand in even an ordinary savings account, you'd have made around $50. It's not a truckload of cash, but just the concept of making money by NOT giving it to the gubmint makes my special places tingly.

Shit, I file married 0 and the wife files married 0 and we still had to pay 1150 dollars to the state. Medical bills were 14K this year and I still could not write off a dollar of it.

I did the same thing as you Leonard, I know people say have the money come to you over the year rather than 1 lump some, but I was always conservative and would rather overpay and get a nice "bonus" then a huge surprise at the end of the year. One year I got 14K back and paid out a bunch of debt, bought a new computer and added the rest to savings.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

I'm clueless when it comes to taxes. I don't know how I could have avoided giving the government such a large, interest free loan. I don't have a guy.

You know that form your job has you fill out called a W4? You can claim any number of dependents on that. It does not have to match what you're gonna claim when you actually file, it just affects how much FICA gets sucked out (does not affect SS or medicare). I used claim 2, just so I didn't have to send the gubmint a massive check, but since I've been working off a capital loss from the last recession, I've been claiming 5.

I haven't done my taxes yet!

However, I don't care about whether or not they receive an "interest free loan". For one thing the amount you get back is over a years time so it's not that big a deal. And secondly, most people if they got that money over the course of a year wouldn't notice it and probably just spend it on shit they don't need. Each year every refund check I receive goes into savings that isn't touched so it's a good way to make sure I'm contributing to myself more than I normally would be.
