Darksiders (Thumbs Up!)

Post by Winnow »

Badass. Get it!

Wow. Bayonetta scored a 93 on metacritic and Darksiders scored an 88.

What a great time to be into Fighting games with some RPG elements thrown in. I got my hands on this game a few days ago but just now tried it out. Many are going to like Darksiders more than Bayonetta and that's saying something as Bayonetta is a great game.

These two games are very similar in that they both have shit tons of combos but are also simple to figure out. I felt comfortable right away button smashing away in Darksiders through the intro which has you more powerful that you start the "real" game. There are lots of ways to customize your character.

Lots of different weapons. I see eight slots to enhance individual weapons and four more "legendary" slots.

Looks like you can carry three different weapons.

You've also got six slots for passive abilities and 4 more slots for wrath abilities

You earn soul, wrath and chaos points killing stuff used for various things. I used soul points to pay off a demon, wrath points to enable wrath abilities (special attacks) not sure yet what chaos (think that's what they're called) are for.

There's also an artifacts screen with 26 slots. Looks like those can be mapped to RT/Y (right trigger + Y button)

You can transform into some demon form (Left Button + Right Trigger) later in the game.

Local and world maps are great. The local map has a legend with 11 things mapped out. Quality and useful.

I looked at the details for my current sword and there's a bunch of combos, both ground and aerial.

Moving around the world is fun. As with Bayonetta, you can jump around and do a lot of moves.. double jump, grab onto ledges, climb up demon gook, shuffle along poles, etc. Has a Tomb raider feel in that respect but none of it is frustrating. It's fun and not meant to be puzzles.

Visuals/Levels are outstanding. As good as Bayonetta with the voice acting being even better. The levels are large and very three dimensional. Feels a little more open than Bayonetta.

As with Bayonetta, you can pick up objects (usually cars) and throw them around.

Has God of War type boss battles but, at least for he first one, didn't have the gay "click this button" symbols like God of War. You figure it out on your own. You do get the "B" button flashing on the screen a lot. That's your finishing move (just like Bayonetta has them) when you've beat down the boss (or some normal enemies) you can hit the B button for some fancy finishing moves which are fun to watch.

As with Bayonetta, you can smash all sorts of stuff to get soul points

Bayonetta and Darksiders are nothing like Protoype and whatever the other game is that came out about the same time. These games have excellent controls.

I'm not going to choose one over the other. Bayonetta is more sexy cool with more jokes, cursing, etc along the way. Darksiders is less tits and ass but still has a cool storyline with lots of cut scenes and very cool demons and creatures.

Both Bayonetta and Darksiders have great looking worlds. Bayonetta has semi fantasy/real day looking scenery that all looks great while Darksiders takes place 100 years in the future on a ruined earth and looks great.

I lean toward Darksiders just slightly for game play. The controls and various ways to get around are a little more open than Bayonetta. The camera is a little more free as well.

Both games rock. I don't see anyone disliking either of these games. Bayonetta is slightly more linear and more like playing through a movie while Darksiders is more of a "game first". Both have a lot of great story and voice acting to them.

Color me impressed. Bayonetta/Darksiders puts 2010 off to an excellent start with Mass Effect, Dark Rain and Final Fantasy XXXIII all also in the first quarter of 2010. Amazing start to the year.

Both will be arriving on my doorstep on the 5th. Btw, rumor has it that Darksiders plays better on the PS3! Bayonetta will get played before Darksiders.

Darksiders is more like Zelda than Bayonetta. Bayonetta is simply an action game turned up to "11". Both are getting great reviews! It looks like gaming for 2010 is starting with a bang.

Even more reviews are out today. This game is scoring much, much better than I expected. It's looking like a surprise hit. If you have even a passing interest, it looks like it will be worth checkng out. Gameplay seems around 20ish hours for a playthrough.

Any weight to the PS3 might be better thing or were you being facetious? Only reason I ask is cause I think I'll get this and if there is a difference visually I'll just get it on the PS3 being as there is no online aspect.

You can look some comparisons up online and form your own opinion before purchasing. It's not as drastic as the 360 version of Bayonetta being so superiour to the PS3 version, but there is indeed a difference. I'm getting the 360 version because I have friends that will want to borrow it as soon as I'm finished with it. The good news is that a fix is going into the 360 version according to a developer. It may have even made the game before shipping dates.

Like I said, it is not game breaking or nearly as big of an issue as the Ghostbusters or Bayonetta issues with the PS3 versions, but it's worth looking into. If I didn't have friends that are chomping at the bit to borrow it, I would've easily chosen the PS3 version.

If you're talking about the same article someone sent to me at work today.. The "you have to have linux, unix, windows, office, photoshop, and world of warcraft installed and stand on one foot while a hooker blows you and then switch the power on quick (ok that wasn't exactly it, but you get the idea). It was most certainly a fake, and does not work.

I can't decide between

Darksiders

Bayonetta

Dante's Inferno

or wait for God o War 2 in March!

Which game has the least shooting and most melee?

Fake, as mentioned. However the jtag exploit has made running of unsigned code (homebrew!) possible on the 360 provided one is able to do a bit of soldering and hasn't updated their dashboard since August!

Probably Dante's Inferno or God of War 3. Judging from what I've played/seen of each though, if challenge is a concern I'm thinking Dante's Inferno is going to end up being the hardest of those four games.

I like games, where you can't have all the passive/active skills/powerups in the game, but have to choose a path.

More fun having to make a choice to shape your character instead of being able to get it all imho.

I haven't really been forced to choose anything so far in Darksiders.
All the shit that can be purchased seems to be inconsequential.

Boss fights so far have been 100% reliant on using whatever gizmo you were given in that level.

There's not a whole lot of combat in the game so the weapon upgrades and powers are pretty much just fancy animations.

About three quarters through the game and it's becoming like work. Pretty sure I won't even bother finishing it.

90% of the game is uninspired, unoriginal junk.
10% of the game is completely fucking awesomely ridiculous fun!

The arena bits in the first 2 dungeons were quite fun.
The duel with Uthane and the romp through the level following it was brilliant.
Athough it was actually kinda dull (target lock, shoot gun, runm in circles), the fight against the Stygian looked very cinematic.

A fucking Portal gun?
You gotta be kidding me.
The only thing more annoying than retarded sticky bomb puzzles are retarded portal puzzles.

They're not even the slightest bit challenging, they are just tedious, unimaginative and time consuming.

The game started as a derivitive but fun hack and slasher with a few puzzles.
The last level (Black Throne) is all puzzles with the occasional fight thrown in.
I never pictured one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse running around with a portal gun and a boomerang, dodging bats and jumping from platform to platform like a fucking italian plumber.

This goes on the 'finished' pile for me.
It's no longer fun.

It's still sitting at a comfortable 83% on Metacritic!

My opinion still remains very high of the game. It gets better the further you get into it IMO! Granted, I'm only in the first dungeon atm, but Tiamat will be dead very soon. Love that glaive!

It wasn't just the ending, it was everything leading up to it. After you defeat the Dark Tower (last dungeon), the story kicks into high gear. Everything after that part is more story intensive than anything else up to that point in the game. It has some nice little plot twists and surprises. It all leads up to the final cinematic which was extremely satisfying. However, the overall details of the plot remain sketchy. You still have no idea who was the mastermind behind the entire scheme. Surprisingly cool and well done.

The Dark Tower was a fucking pain in the ass. It was so much more puzzle oriented than anything before it, and the puzzles were plentiful, varied, and at times quite difficult. I searched for cheats 3 seperate times and couldn't find the answers or didn't know how to phrase my questions right so I beat the entire thing on my own, which was not easy! It was like a 3D version of Braid at times. You really had to use your head and think outside the box. One puzzle stands out as really, really hard. I beat it with trial and error, but have no clue how I actually did it.

Darksiders gets a 9.5/10 from me.

I must have missed that level.
puzzles were plentiful, varied, and at times quite difficult.
I guess one person's tedious, unimaginative and stupidly easy are another person's plentiful, varied and difficult.

You really had to use your head and think outside the box.
Do you even know what 'thinking outside the box' means?
Every puzzle (including boss fights) in this game can only be solved in the exact manner as the developers intended.
That's pretty much the exact opposite of thinking outside the box.

It rarely took me more than a minute or two to figure out how the developers wanted puzzles solved but the tedium involved in the execution of the solutions is what killed the game for me.

Good puzzle games (like Portal) allow for player creativity in solving puzzles.
Darksiders tries to rip off Portal but limits you to very specific places where portals can be used.
