Red Faction: Guerilla

Post by miir »

Buy this game.

It's kinda like GTA.... on Mars.
Everything in the world is destructible. Houses, vehicles, brick walls, bridges... everything.

You start the game with a sledgehammer and explosive charges.
Taking a flying (low-g) leap and swinging your hammer to send a badguy flying is hillarious.

Instead of shooting every single EDF goon in a building, just throw explosive charges on the main supports and crush them all in the rubble.
If there's a wall between you and where you want to go, don't find a way to walk around it.. just smash the fucking thing and walk through it.
If you know there's a goon on the other side of the wall, you could sneak around, get into cover and shoot them with your assault rifle or you could just go koolaid man on his ass and smash through him and the wall at the same time.

This game is unbelievably fucking fun.

There's a great variety of missions.
There's hostage rescues, fending off EDF assaults, demolition missions.
It's a sandbox type game so you can do whatever the hell you want... but you will need to meet certain criteria to open new areas (like GTA). There are oodles of upgrades that can be purchased. Currency is salvage which you earn by breaking shit.

I wanted to post about this game for a few days but didn't get around to it.

The sticky detonation charges are worth the price of the game alone. I have no time to play games as my time is happily occupied elsewhere but I still will download and burn them to try out. Fun factor in this game is high with very little frustration.

If you like to blow shit up. This is the game to get.

Toys R Us is giving away a 20$ gift card when you buy Prototype this week so I may just end up getting that and Red Faction for 100$. We'll see. It is getting some pretty solid reviews so far. Although, I'm not sure I should be buying 2 sandbox-esque games at the same time.

Anyone else notice how the industry kind of came to a standstill last week? It's hard to find reviews!

Reviews have been slow for a while now, not sure why. I can think of a lot of games recently that I couldn't find reviews on until the day they came out at least.

Fuckin' A this game rocks my face! I've read an awful lot of player reviews on other forums and everyone is just in love with this game. I was still not super excited about it and was having a bit of buyer's remorse. Today, I beat Halo 3 and decided to install Red Faction on my HD. After it installed, I figured I would try it out just to see how it looked on my TV. Well, an hour later and I'm late for work and still need to take a shower...

Goddamn this is a fun game. As far as I can tell, it has pretty much flawless execution. Everyone should be playing this. For a game I bought on a whim I couldn't be happier. I'm actually going to wait and get Prototype on Saturday since this game will easily be taking up the majority of my time.

I can't wait to get home and play more of this.

Anyone know how long this will take to beat the single player campaign?

I think I read 25ish hours to plow through the main story/missions.
I think I've played about 15 hours I'm probably about 20% done... I'ts just way too much fun to run around and pointlessly smash shit.

I officially forgive this game for having a colon in the title.

Multi player is godly awesome. I'm officially in love with this game.

My only complaint is that weapon swapping is sluggish. They should've simply let the player map to the D pad instead of the current "hold down RB + weapon button" to swap. That is pretty hard to do while jetpacking around a map and tossing bombs.

The first DLC is going to be a single player 'prequel' campaign.

I'm kind of torn on the DLC, so I'm going to pass and hopefully it will go on sale within the next 6ish months and I'll buy it then.

It looks good though, and I hope it sells well!

Some publishers are charging full price for games that take 6-8 hours to play through.
Terminator Salvation, Mirror's Edge.. even Ghostbusters was pretty slim on content for a full-price game.
$9.99 for DLC that will take 6-8 hours to play through is good value. And if you're like me and must explore every nook and cranny... you're probably looking at 12-15 hours which makes it a total bargain!

Don't get me wrong, I agree on all counts. I've just moved on from that game and don't feel the need to revisit it right now.
