I'm really surprised not to see Ghostbusters in the top 10. I'm also amazed at Prototype's position. It looks like the PS3 gets chose Infamous over Prototype since it failed to chart for that system.

Xbox is doing very well, Wii numbers are finally falling, and Sony is fucking nuts if they think they are going to sell 3 million more PS3s this year over last year's numbers. They continue to get outdone every month.

It's one of those momments where you can see the big differences between the console owners. Even PS3's console exclusive (Infamous) had good numbers and they have less than 1/3 the market share of Nintendo. What does that say about the fate of future "hardcore games" for the Wii? Developers are probably thinking "fuck it, make another Wii Sports".

Pretty much. That game sounded cool the first time I read about it, then I saw the reviews and some gameplay footage and passed.

It was hyped as a FPS for hardcore gamers. I read a 8 page or so article in Game Informer about a year ago hyping it up and have read a bunch about it since. It ended up being not bad, but average. Someone forgot to tell them you can't make a shooter for hardcore gamers with no online infrastructure to speak of.

The Xbox 360 is the only platform to have realized a unit sales increase over last June. YTD, both the 360 and NDS have generated an increase in unit sales. Although many track month-to-month sales changes, comparisons to May must take into account that June is a five-week reporting month while May spanned four weeks."

Wii and PS3 will probably be down from 2009 also, but both systems have much stronger lineups in the second half of the year. PS3 is widely expected to receive a price cut in August, September or October as well. Wii could see a price drop in a similar time frame as well. The difference between the two systems is that for Nintendo the 445,000 drop in the half year total amounts to only a ~12% drop in pace from 2008, while the PS3 drop is over 30%. Xbox 360 and DS are up year over year by wide margins and should remain that way for the rest of the year.

For 2009 to top 2008 though, Wii or PS3 (or both) will need to top their 2008 sales figures so that software rates can offset the current 12% year over year decline in USA video game revenue reported by NPD.

In Europe PS3 sales have averages 290k per month... the 360 has averaged 220k per month.
The 360 had a sales advantage in Europe of neary 3 million units when the PS3 was released... that advantage has shrunk to less then 500k.

When those figures are combined, the 360 is really in a solid 2nd place behind Wii. If Wii sales continue to dip and the 360 continues to rise, there may be a real chance of it becoming the dominate system here in the states. PS3 is last for a number of reasons and will never advance past that position. Even if they did a price drop the PS3 is going to fall way short of thier yearly goal. They still sell a lot of PS2s though! Pretty impressive IMO.

I'd turn it on again but am positive I'd have to sit through another 30 minute firmware "upgrade". The free PS3 remote control (yeah Val, remotes blow, use a mouse) still sits in it's packaging, never opened.

Biggest mistake ever was buying Little Big Planet (sucks) and GTA IV for the PS3. GTAIV graphics are darker and suckier on the PS3 than on the 360. I have both. No, they aren't the same.

I will actually agree with winnow on a few points, although I'm not doing it just to be a pain

The usb placement isn't so much the problem as how they are inset into the console. The 360 is similar but I never have issues plugging stuff into it and I find myself fumbling with the PS3 whenever I plug something in.

The controllers don't charge for me when the console is off either, nor does my phone - which are both things I do regularly with my 360. And having the short USB cords does suck. I would have to keep one controller plugged in at all times to not have to deal with the damn cord because even if you charge a controller and don't use it for a while it loses the charge, and since I don't play my PS3 frequently I find myself having to sit three feet away from the tv to have the controller plugged in while I play, which sucks.

I also don't like the rear bumpers on the controllers, I just don't feel like I have as good of a grip on the controller.

That being said, I have enjoyed most of the games I have on the PS3 and do like some features it has that the 360 doesn't. I'd by no means call it a terrible abortion of a system, but I'd certainly rate it considerably lower than the 360 in damn near every aspect.

Which brings up another point. It doesn't matter if the PS3 is even close to the 360 if the money making software sales are going to 360 for games available on both platforms. When people own both systems, it seems clear they typically choose the 360 version because Sony's online service blows ass compared to Live.

I'll probably get FFXIII for the 360 because of the controller even though I bought the last two FF's games for the PS2. Sony insisting on using WWII technology and ancient form factor with their PS3 controller really sucks. I've also got the original 60GB PS3 so the controller is extra sucky without rumble. Plus my controller is probably drained from non use and don't want to find that stupid cord required for recharging and the dumb USB placement underneath an overhang where it's impossible to see unless your contort your body to find see the hole, which requires an industrial strength flashlight....poorly designed from top to bottom.

Can you imagine the heartbreak if you were a kid back when the PS3 came out and were stuck with that as a gift using the folding app while all your friends had fun with the 360?



Where are the USB ports? Oh, underneath that overhanging thing, set back deep where you have to lift the console to see wtf you're doing. Maybe next time they'll just stick the ports on the bottom of the console...wouldn't be much worse.



At least I got 4 poorly placed USB ports. It looks like the newer systems only have two poorly places ports? Did the newer PS3s also lose the smart card reader housed in that goofy looking overhang compartment?
