THE DA VINCI CODE FEAST!
A special FIVE course feast with matching wine pairings, all based on the book!
As I said last week, I never read The Da Vinci Code. And now that the movie's coming out this weekend, I'll never have to! To celebrate the newest Tom Hanks hairstyle, we'll be pulling out all the usual Alamo tricks for DA VINCI, with a special preshow filled with video quiz questions based on subjects from the book... but that's just the beginning. The real deal is that we're having a special DA VINCI CODE FEAST on Tuesday, May 23rd with a five course meal paired with matching wine that's all inspired by the book. Check out this menu:
Amuse::Green Olives stuffed with smoked dove ::: Appetizer::Loaves and Fishes - Grilled brioche with Samaka Hara A Syrian dish of red snapper baked in tomato chile sauce ::: Salad::Israeli Salad - Diced fresh tomato, cucumber, jicama, bell pepper and onion dressed with fresh lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil and parsley ::: Entree::Steak au Poivre with a chianti Porcini reduction with potatoes dauphinoise and haricot verts ::: Dessert::Tart Magdalene - Honeyed goats ricotta topped with fresh figs and pomegranate molasses
It's the one screening in town where you'll walk out of the theater with a belly as full as your head.

Da Vinci Code
So, opens this weekend and I wasn't expecting to go see it for a few weeks...until a co-worker plopped some tickets to this on my desk:

Hehe, finally someone that agrees with me. Angels and Demons was ok, Da Vinci code was great, but the last 2 got quite boring because you could see everything coming from 50 pages away.

This is a case where I actually would rather see the movie than read the book. Although if the movie isn't any good I'd rather not see it either.
I've heard that Da Vinci Code is a bit like any other popular thriller, but with far more interesting subject matter. If that's true, I can watch the movie and get the interesting subject matter without the bullshit thriller writing. If it's not, I'm not really bothered. It's not like I'm lacking in books to read.

The Davinci Code took me like 4 or 5 hours to read. It was entertaining, I'll definitely see the movie, though I'm not sure if it'll be in the theater or on DVD.
That said, I don't really understand why it became like the most popular book of the last 5 or 10 years.

I saw this today, but hadn't read the book.
I thought it was a very interesting storyline... one that has me reconsidering my views on some commonly held beliefs. I enjoyed the movie for what it was... a story.
I'm going to go get the book tomorrow. I want to see what I missed.

Supposedly they cut little, if anything, from the book when the movie was made. Will find out tonight myself.Aruman wrote:I saw this today, but hadn't read the book.

I read the book and then saw the movie. As with almost all book into movie productions, the book was much, much more detailed and just better in general. The movie did stick to the book very closely with the big exception being that in the book, they had to solve 2 codex riddles to unlock the note inside. I dont blame them for ommitting that part to cut down the length of the movie though and it didnt take anything away from the main storyline.
If you havent read the book i would recommend seeing the movie but if you have read the book, just wait till it comes out on DVD.

I didn't like the movie overall. I could see a good movie trying to break out of the bad one I was viewing but it never did.
Overall, I give it a few extra points because it's funny to see someone poking fun at all the people that worship some common schmo that was no different than L.Ron Hubbard. The flashback scenes where all the people were in the room debating on what was actually going to be in the bible were great.
It was Tom Hanks' worst acting performances (probably not his fault) and one of Ron Howard's worst films.

Saw the movie yesterday. I enjoyed it. Basically what I expected.
Hanks was fine, but I'll never understand why he was picked for that role, unless it was just a matter of "OMG we can get Tom Hanks, let's roll" or something.
Much
for Sir Ian and Paul Bettany (Silas). Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno were pretty good too. Alfred Molina looked constipated for the whole film for some reason, and they really oversimplified his character into a "bad guy" instead of a gullible puppet.
Pretty good, but so much exposition, and fascinating symbology/history stuff had to be sacrificed for the jump from book to film, and that was always the one part of the book I actually enjoyed.
The story itself was only slightly abridged, but so much neat art history and linguistic symobology had to be trimmed that I can see how someone who hadn't read the book could leave thinking "I don't understand what all the fuss is about". The fact is that the story was the least interesting part of the book.

Saw it this weekend and was pretty disappointed. As Niffoni said, it wasn't so much the story as the history that was interesting. That and the puzzles and mystery surrounding them. A lot of that was lost in the movie which made the movie itself fairly boring. So much so that the lady in front of us and two people behind us fell asleep several times. The audiobook was good, the movie not so much..

Re: Da Vinci Code
One of my new-hire reps was attempting to track his sales on the board last week by completing the code. He probably would have made it if we had not pulled them all off of the phones for a couple hours
