Bug

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Yeah. Wow.

This movie came out in 2007 and can be found in the horror section of any store. The only problem is that this movie isn't a horror movie. It may be hard to define, but I sure as hell wouldn't call it horror. I say it's more like a psychological thriller.

The first thing you need to know about this movie is that it's based on a play. As with all movies based on plays, you can expect a couple of things right off the bat. You know it's going to be dialogue heavy, have minimal sets, and have a small cast. Bug sticks to these basic principles. The majority of the movie takes place in a tiny 3 room motel in the middle of nowhere, with 2 people feeding each other's psychosis.

The next thing you need to know is that bugs are not going around eating people. Since this movie is always in the horror section, I would imagine that is the first thing that jumps into people's minds.

The movie is actually about a lonely, fucked up chick (Ashley Judd) who hooks up with a mentally unstable drifter (Michael Shannon). This film shows what can happen when a borderline crazy woman develops a very unhealthy co-dependant relationship with a man who is completely off his goddamn rocker.

There are 3 acts to the movie. First act is character introduction. The second is relationship development. The third act is a left turn at 100mph straight into crazy town.

When the credits rolled after this movie, my wife and I just stared across the room at each other, each one trying to form a sentence to describe what we had just witnessed. I spoke first, with "What. The. Fuck.". She followed with "Well that was disturbing." We chatted for a good 10 minutes after the movie trying to decipher what we had just seen.

I asked my wife who she would recommend the move to, and she couldn't think of anyone. Meanwhile, I would recommend it to pretty much everyone! People need to see movies like this that destroy all the standard movie stereotypes. You never really knew what was going to happen, or when. Once things went south, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. It all happened so fast, that I just sat there gawking at the screen not really having time to take it all in. The acting was fantastic. There was one scene where Ashley Judd rambled on an on for at least 5 minutes straight in one cut.

I give Bug 7.7/10. My wife gave it a 7/10 and said she will be disturbed by the movie for awhile.
