This movie is fucking terrible. Flat out. The movie has some neat effects as should be expected, but that's about it. I went with 6 people and we all said the same thing. I also heard some scattered boos in the theater after it was over.

I really want to post the following without using spoilers just to save you guys from this heap of shit, but I won't. (if you haven't seen this, read the spoiler, it won't give away too much, I promise)

Aliens. This movie is about fucking aliens. That whole Kingdom of a Crystal Skull? Yeah, thats a massive underground UFO. The explanation of this is absolutely laughable.

I wouldn't say it was totally horrible but I was a bit disappointed. I believe that is mainly due to that I really wasn't expecting it to be about the subject that it was.

Bummer.

The original movie (Raiders) is a classic.

Just saw it. Its not as bad as the internet fanboi nerd rage is making it out to be, but someone deffinately needs to put a cease and desist order out against Lucas to keep him from raping people's childhoods. Spoiler comments follow:
[Show]
The whole aliens thing was fine, as far as I am concerned. The whole Aztec/Mayans were influenced by men from space thing is a staple of science fiction and fantasy and it was handled descently, for the most part, here. I mean, this is a series that has featured a box full of jew toilet paper that melted nazi faces, rocks that start on fire when you talk to them, water that makes people evil, and a cup that grants eternal life; but people are bitching that the alien thing is implausable?

The action scenes and special effects were fine and not out of character with the previous movies and they spent a lot of time centered on exploring old ruins, which was a good move. The real issues were the fairly streamlined plot and predictable story that just went straight to the ending, unlike the previous movies where there was more interaction with the main villian and a lot more side shit. The ending is where it really missed the mark, though. Simply having the aliens wink out and the temple collapse would have been enough. The whole flying saucer thing and the "They are from another Dimension!!!!!" thing was over the top, and I am having a hard time imagining what the script must have looked like before Speilburg and Ford talked Lucas down from what they considered too over the top. The only way that end sequence could have been worse is if the 13 aliens combined to form Yodatron and they then lightsabered the main villian to death.

A lot of the story telling was forced and the woman from the first movie was just plain horrible with her acting, not to mention making Ford look younger in comparison. Blanchette was fine as the villian, but they just plain didn't do anything with the villians in this movie, which did more to hurt it than any other single thing. Well, that and the sight gags were really forced. The one thing that stood out to me was the prarie dog scene. I cringe saying this, in a movie that featured aliens who somehow stuck around for 7 thousand years waiting for their friend bob's head to be re-atatched, but the stupid prarie dog scenes were a bit over the top. The other nagging issue to me is that I don't think the whole pulp action nostalgia thing works in the cold war hystaria environment like it did with nazis as the main villians. Its a shame, really, because I think the whole story idea would have worked just as well with Nazis chasing Indi around South America, but then Ford looks too fucking old, so they had to move the time up I guess.

I thought the interaction between Indi and his son was well done and they should have replaced a lot of forced shit with more of Ford and him running around doing shit, maybe had seperate rescue sequences instead of "oh the old guy, the skull, and the love interest are conveniently kept here" shit that they ran with. It felt like the whole fucking movie was being done on a tight budget. Its not a bad movie (I liked it more than Temple of Doom) but its a far cry from being a must see. For all the bitching you will hear about it, it at least wrapped up the series nicely with Indi settling down and taking on the role of his father, though that scene would have been helped a lot by having John Rhys-Davies as best man, or something.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

I guess I should point out that I've seen the first three like once and was only marginally interested in seeing this one. I more or less just went with the crowd on this one.
[Show]
Yeah, the ending is where the movie lost it for me. Especially (after what you mentioned) Indy goes, "Oh yeah, gold also means knowledge, knowledge must be the treasure!" as the UFO flies away. And I agree, the villians were not needed. Hell, even if they found the place on their own they still all would have died the same death. They just made for some obscenely long chase scenes.

With ticket prices getting so high, I'll just wait for this one on DVD. The average ticket went up 2$ this summer due to the higher cost for popcorn. Add that to the insane price of gas, and count me as one of the cheap bastards for not going to see this in the theater. Next year, ticket prices are expected to see yet another price jump due to the increasing demand for ethanol. Meanwhile, DVDs are getting cheaper and cheaper.

Not a good movie.

Indiana Jones is all about action scenes. Suspension of believe has always been required for these scenes but in Crystal Skull, it's like slapstick humor. The car/truck chase scene through the jungle made me groan. Indiana Jones' son acting like Tarzan swinging vine to vine with monkeys must have been a turning point for may viewers.

I prefer to remember Harrison Ford in his pre-geriatric Indiana Jones role. He's closing in on 70 in this movie and it's painfully obvious. Stunt doubles don't help forget that you're looking at a very old man that should be making cool Clint Eastwood type old man movies instead of this stuff.

Short review of this movie would be, "forced and predictable, with over the top corny action thrown in".

2/10

Don't let this movie ruin Raiders of the Lost Ark which belongs on all time best action movie lists.

lol I forgot about the tarzan part. yeah I suspended belief up until he caught up to a speeding car chase by swinging on vines with 4000 monkeys. after of course the car chase went roughly 13 miles of inexplicable speed through the amazon following an overly large buzzsaw that was going like 20 mph.

looked cool though!

OMG...please get it out of my head...this Indy movie does NOT exists...it captures absolutely nothing about the series. Hell, National Treasure 1 and 2 were better than this movie...19 years and this is the best they could come up with?!?!? I'm so sad :(

I went in not expecting much due to the internet and I walked out entertained.

The subject matter worked in context and the humor was good.

Solid 7/10 in my books.

One major problem I have is, after the movie all I remembered was the scene at the beginning in the Area 51 warehouse, the chase in the jungle, and the flying saucer taking off. That was the movie for me. Other Indy movies seemed as if they were much longer had a lot more packed in them. This movie just seems to have 3-4 really drawn out scenes.

I liked the part where Princess Leia put medals around their necks and R2-D2 got fixed and polished up. Hell, they even combed the wookie, which is no easy task, lemme tell you.

This movie wasn't nearly as bad as I was anticipating. There were 3 action scenes that I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy them. All in all, it was decent. The villian wasn't evil enough IMO. The subject matter veered a little into the kooky as well. I found myself missing all the religious aspects from the originals. Too bad the TV commercials for the upcoming DVD gave away 2 major spoilers that I had managed to avoid up until then. That pissed me off.

Btw, there are rumors of a 5th.
