Hacking Democracy

Post by Xouqoa »

Anybody seen this? It is a documentary on the vulnerabilities and problems with electronic voting systems. Primarily it focuses on Diebold systems, which were the ones responsible for the NEGATIVE over all vote count for Gore in Volusia County, FL in 2000.

The highlight of the movie is towards the end. After getting the Diebold engineer to publicly say that the votes can not be hacked solely by manipulating a memory card, they totally do it in a fake election with easily repeatable results.

The scary part was that it really wasn't all that hard to do, and pretty much anybody could be trained to do it before the voting starts.

This is a great documentary. The concerns they bring up about how our votes are counted matter to anyone who votes. I know that certain people on this board will condemn the film, but if you concentrate on the key fact that the voting machines are easily manipulated, it should bring up concerns for EVERYONE.

Yeah, I watched this a couple of times back when it came out. It's eye-opening, to say the least.

It actually made Man of the Year seem even more probable, but with less funny.
