Movie: The Ring

Post by Fairweather Pure »

I caught this last Friday at the cheap theater and gotta say that I really liked it.

Anyone else catch this and care to discuss the film?

For those who do not know, the movie is horror film about a VHS tape. If you watch it, you die 7 days after viewing it. Sounds bad, I know. That's why I waited till it was at the cheap theater. Reguardless of how stupid it sounds, it was done exceptionally well and easily goes down as one of my all time favorite scary movies. It was capitivating and filmed very well. The storyline was also rather complex, with a plethora of stimulating visuals. It also let your mind wander OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS and fill in the blanks, making your skin crawl through at least 1/2 the movie.

I also wanted to add that the main character is trying to research the tape and discover it's origins and purpose. The audiance gets to follow along and fill in th pieces as she discovers new clues. I was constantly trying to figure out what was going on and each new clue was excellent mind candy and altered my theory almost everytime. I thought the ending was better than even I could've imagined.

I give it 9 out of 10 as far as horror films. Very good movie.

That's why older horror movies are usually better than todays horror movies. They did more with less. When you don't resort to relying on cheezy special effects via CGI, your mind is left to fill in the void for what you cannot see. Cats like Hitchcock were masters of scaring you with your own imagination. Because when it comes down to it, your mind will produce a more horrific picture than any CGI ever will.

More trivia: It's based on a Japanese horror film from '98 called Ringu. Haven't seen that version but I've heard (read) that it is very good as well.

I liked this movie as well, lots of good creepiness and some disturbing images/ideas. I like its departure from the nice happy ending pattern that so many "horror" movies have nowadays.

Thumbs up.

Howdy folks, saw this forum from a link on Millie's Movie House. Anyhoo, I have seen The Ring and I also own all 3 Ringu movies from Japan. Suprisingly I enjoyed the American The Ring more than the japanese ones. I think part of it is because it takes elements from all 3 Ringu movies and forms a more complete movie. You do get far more exposition if you were to watch Ringu, Ring 2, and Ring 0, however its also long and drawn out. It is hard however to give a full unbiased look on Ringu as I saw The Ring before I got the japanese movies, but I found The Ring was more disturbing and had better scares.

Ringu is probably worth a rent if you can find it at an import shop, Ring 2 and Ring 0 (a prequal) are mostly to flesh out the story. If you are bored one night they are worth picking up I suppose, but nothing you need to see.
