Paul Pierce fined for throwing gang sign

Post by Boogahz »

After Horford hit a clinching basket with 22 seconds left in Atlanta's Game 3 victory, the rookie began jawing with Pierce before heading for the Hawks bench. Pierce followed Horford as far as midcourt, glaring in his direction before holding up his right hand, forming an "O" with his thumb and index finger and extending the other three fingers.

Pierce's gesture resembled a gang sign, though Boston general manager Danny Ainge denied that it had anything to with such an illicit activity. He said the player holds up three fingers to represent "blood, sweat and tears."

"Watch what Paul does when he's introduced. He's done it for every game," Ainge said. "That's not anything related to" gangs.

Horford said he understood why the league came down so hard on Pierce.

"I knew he was upset after the play," the Hawks forward said. "I honestly didn't know what it meant. But the league wants to keep its image."

Pierce declined comment on the fine, though he indicated it would be appealed.

"I'm here getting ready for Game 4," he said before Monday night's contest at Philips Arena. "We'll take care of that when the season's over. I'm not really worried about it right now."
That's funny. I bet the bangers in my neighborhood are just making the sign to reflect their hardships as well. I am fairly certain they aren't doing it to support the Celtics. Then again, they may be aware of a possible affiliation which the NBA is not. I caught the sign when he made it on the sideline during the game, and I was wondering when the NBA switched to a duel system for punishing fouls.

That's hilarious. He threw up a gang sign after getting fouled? What an idiot.

By that logic, if one guy in the Marines rapes a girl in Okinawa, the rape-era in the marines does exist!

Not really flaming you, just pointing out the pretty obvious gap in logic.

But women have been getting raped by service men, pretty much since the beginning. I doubt Larry Bird or Magic Johnson or Jerry West or Dr. J ever threw up gang signs during a game, or any player from the 80's or before.

I wasn't aware that the "ok" sign. (or the asshole sign) was the official gang sign of the bloods. I had learned a couple signs for them, but none matched this.

Maybe it's changed though as that was several years ago.

going from the description in the article...that's exactly what it sounds like. A circle formed with the index finger and thumb and the other three fingers sticking straight out.

Granted, I didn't see it. I don't watch basketball.

yeah, the article did make it sound that way.

Have you ever made a dog-type shadow puppet on a wall? It is almost like that, except you take the thumb (ear) and fold it down to touch the tip of your index finger (folded back to make the "eye"). Oh, and you don't move the pinky up and down like a mouth :P

It was Piru, from what I've read.

The site I was reading linked to this POSSIBLY NWS LINK, but websense is blocking it. I can't say for certain whether it's relevant.

bitcorp really took the easy way out with the bunny ears. I'd join that gang so I wouldn't get capped for forgetting the sign.

Or is that "victory"? funky font.

Interesting. I knew several of those, but didn't know the second one for B.K.

Thanks for correcting!

Yeah, Piru is the sign he made. The picture helped show what I was trying to describe. :P I have never seen what he does in the pre-game that was referred to in the article, but I have seen several comments elsewhere that it was also Blood related.
