I've wondered why the big establishment Democrats have been backing Obama at a better than 2 to 1 pace. Even folks that know the nasty side of Hillary have been willing to suffer her wrath and back the big O. Two months ago this didn't seem so unreasonable when Obama had momentum. But even though he has stumbled the superdelegates are still lining up behind him. This puzzled me because I don't think he has a snowball's chance in hell of winning the Presidency and I suspect that many pragmatic Democrats must feel the same way. So why are they backing the losing horse?
Well, I've reasoned it this way: If you have only the choice of dumb and dumber, make the choice that will generate additional benefits. I foresee that even a losing Obama race will generate a lot more enthusiasm among young voters than a Hillary campaign. A strong turnout among the young and progressive may reap hundreds of extra seats in state legislatures and help cement the Democratic lead in the United States House and Senate.
So if you don't think your chances of winning the Presidency are high, strengthening your hold on the legislative branch isn't a bad strategy. And even the loss of the White House won't sting so badly because you have the unspoken bonus of getting a Republican who is distrusted by his own conservative base and has been proven to be amenable to liberal policies. If you get 60 seats in the Senate then McCain will be rendered largely impotent in any event.
I'd almost back Obama myself but I see a man without moral convictions. When you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything. His strongest and most conniving advisors will lead him around like a puppy on a leash. In other words, "God Damn America", on a daily basis.
