What 360 game to buy?

Post by Sylvus »

I haven't bought a 360 game in a while, and was thinking about picking one up after work today. Any recommendations? I think the only ones I've bought since Halo3 came out are Guitar Hero III and Lost Odyssey.

Kind of depends on what you are looking for, but I will make a couple of suggestions.

For a typical FPS game I would recommend: Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I think it is a better choice than CoD4 for many reasons but mainly because it has such a variety of game types/modes to play on and offline.

For a FPS with a twist I would try Dark Sector - can read what I said about it in the thread I made today.

Other than that I am drawing a blank, there hasn't been a whole lot out in the past couple of months. I'll add more if I can think of what else I've played recently.

CoD4 and R6V2 were both things I was considering.

From your Dark Sector post, I'm not sure if it is worth paying for if it's only going to be like 10hrs of playtime. I'm not big into replaying games or anything.

How does the multiplayer stack up on CoD4 and R6V2? Easy to get into games? Lots of people playing either of them?

CoD4 for FPS

Lost Oddesy for RPG

NHL08 for Sports

Katamri Damacy for just plain fun.

It goes without saying that if you enjoyed GH3, Rock Band is an easy recommendation.

I think you will find plenty of people playing both, and it is very easy to find multiplayer matches for both as well.

R6V2 of course is a little more tactical, you can't generally spawn an unlimited number of times so games can be much shorter or longer depending.

You can set up CoD4 games to be the same way. You can also take away the entire HUD and only allow the map to show up when your side's UAV is in the air.

Yeah, I know - but by default that is how it is set up in most cases, and the majority of games you join will be that way. Call of Duty I have found it to be more rare (and/or only in hardcore matches, which see less traffic.)

Not necessarilly. While Hardcore may not be a "popular" for gametypes such as Team Deathmatch, on the PC I had to go through several screens of Hardcore servers to find one that wasn't while I was working on my Search & Destroy Challenges. Even then, it had respawns turned off. I guess it depends on the skill and maturity level of the players on the servers. I returned CoD4 (360 version) after only a couple days though. I have been playing the PC version which is much better in my opinion.

I refuse to buy another game without renting it first :P Right now I have Army of Two and WWE 2008 (I think) sitting at home waiting on some play. I have been in EQ2 so much lately that I haven't done much more than the tutorial in Army of Two.

RB6 Vegas 2 = win.

The AI in story mode and terrorist hunt is far greater than any AI you will see in other FPS games. The real win with the RB6 games are the co-op play on story mode, the co-op terrorist hunt, plus the multiplayer matches makes it well worth it. I find I really like the terrorist hunts more than the PvP options. You can do private invites and not have to get all the jackasses.

Yeah Army of Two is definitely a renter, good call.

I'm not sure about on the PC, but it seems like every time I look on the 360 for CoD there are a couple hundred thousand non hardcore matches going (team deathmatch, for example) and maybe 25k hardcore.

The point I was making really, is that R6 is very much a squad based tactic game and I look at CoD as more of a run n gun game. I think the maturity level of the player contributes to the game being viewed this way too, I have encountered mature players that work together much more in R6 than in CoD.

I agree, I am working at beating the campaign on realistic right now, and I'm almost there! It's really damn hard. I will say that the second to last mission in CoD's campaign (the timed one) was way harder than anything I've ran into in the R6 campaign, but that had zero to do with AI.

In CoD4 I could go the same way every time, know when and where enemies were going to come from, and just mow them down. In R6 they change, and if you sit and wait for one to come around a corner, chances are he is gonna come up behind you and shoot you in the back before you see it coming.

Haha, I am on the part now where I am trying to find alvarez, I just cleared the trainyard. I can't remember, either I have one act to go or im on the last. I do remember the helicopter and I'm plenty sure it's going to fucking suck on realistic.

Send me a invite sometime if you are looking for someone to do some terrorist hunts with or whatever. I have a group of guys I usually play R6 with on Wednesdays but a few of them are out of commission because of broken 360's :(

i can recommend army of two for coop. thats been the most fun CoOp game i've played thus far, including Vegas 2. its fairly short though and I can't vouch for anything but the campaign, so a rent might be best.

COD4 I'd recommend for the PC and not the 360!

If you haven't already, take a look at Mass Effect and Shivering Isles. Those are the two titles on the 360 that I can recommend to anyone.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

If you like Guitar Hero-type games, definitely grab Rock Band. I find it to be a much more enjoyable game!
