Windows Mobile 5.x - Moto Q SmartPhone

Good morning, all. I just upgraded my cell phone and got a Motorola Moto Q (I have Sprint). This is my first foray into the world of Windows Mobile. I am really, really enjoying the phone thus far. Nice screen size - crystal clear - good web access - oh...it's a nice phone too





I have been using Audacity to take parts of my favorite MP3's and make them into ringers - fun stuff. I just got a 4 GB MiniSD card for $35 bucks - so I have decent room to put some apps on there - which brings me to my question:

Can anyone recommend any worthwhile apps (fun, productive or indespensible) for Windows Mobile? The only things I put on there were chess, Kevtris (Tetris clone), Office Mobile, Google Maps and Octro. I highly recommend Octro - it is beta right now and free at the moment - it is an IM client - you can do Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, Google Talk/Jabber.

I also recommend having some sort of task manager where you can easily close a specific or all apps. mines called O2 Plus but there's so many and all have different features so I wont recommend one over the rest.

Another handy thing is an app that can soft-reset the device.

I just got this phone this week and so far loving it. There are a bunch of things you would figure the phone would do out of the box like edit a text file that it doesnt do, however the list of apps you can get for it are pretty long and cover "most" of my needs. http://www.hellomotoq.com/forums/index.php is a great resource for apps and help.

How well do these things sync with Lotus Notes calendar-wise?

there are some Lotus Notes add ons you can get for a price, out of the box it will not work with notes at all from what I have seen.

I work for a bank that has little interest in switching from Lotus Notes despite itching to switch to Vista (/boggle). I've already decided my next phone must synch with the Lotus Notes calendar easily; as my current one (LG Chocolate) apparently does not and it's driving me batshit that I have this mini-computer in my pocket with over a gig of memory, yet it can't carry my fucking calandar without me editing every item in by hand.

EDIT: Read a few of the links. It looks like this is a data synch where a monitor application sends updates over the internet to your phone. While it appears this would work even with my current phone, it's not what I'm looking for seeing that it costs extra (about $30/mo extra...). I just want something that can use IR or a cable to synch the calendar locally with.

I'd highly recommend you forget IR and look for Bluetooth/USB synching. Reason being is that IR seems to be losing popularity while Bluetooth is picking it up. USB gives you some additional functionality/speed.

PS I obviously realize that you're limited by what your organization is going to do both for the phone and desktop/laptop.

i'm working on something especially tasty... i can get my windows mobile device and my ipod touch to join together as an ad-hoc network, but im trying to get the phone to share the data connection

edit: well that didn't take long,,,

1) Open Settings->Internet Sharing. Enable IS for Bluetooth PAN.
2) Change HKLM\Comm\ConnectionSharing\PrivateInterface to "TIACXWLN1" (it should currently be "BTPAN1").
3) Open Settings-> Connections -> Wi-Fi. Select Network Adapters tab. Click IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi.
4) Enter IP address 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Click OK.
5) Select Wireless tab. Add New.. to add the Network name for your ad-hoc network (I prefer "adhoc"
6) Set the client computer to use the same ad-hoc network. Client will receive an IP address from the device (don't need to manually set the IP).

it works i can now get online with my ipod wherever my phone has data access!

Maybe I am missing something, but what do you get out of doing that? Is the phone not capable of many of the things you are doing on the iPod Touch?

I understood that it would rock, but I was under the impression that many of those things could be installed with Windows Mobile. I have not had a cellphone at all for about three years now, and I have never used that OS to know what it is capable of. That's why I asked the question rather than just assuming he was stoopid for having two pieces of equipment that did the same thing

I could basically do anything except purchase music over itunes music store with my phone... the thing is, the phones interface and usability/speed sucks ass when compared to the ipod.

1 tap on the ipod and i'm on google maps.
1 tap on the ipod and i have the weather for pittston and 1 swipe right for scranton.
1 tap and im looking at the list of youtube features.
1 tap tetris, text editor, sudoku, sketchboard, etc...

with the phone, everything is basically start->programs->
unless you have shortcuts or launcher on your today screen...

the browser on windows mobile is atrocious (it fucks VV up hardcore) while it renders perfectly on the ipod, and the entire interface is fluid and comfortable.

despite similar features, there is really no comparing the two

Opinions vary widely, but once you've used a iTouch or iPhone for a bit, it's easy to prefer that interface.

I'm not just talking about the keyboard. It's a beautiful screen, the pinch zoom feature is great. It's really neat. The more you can get access to the underlying OS and turn it into something really useful the better it will be.

Also remember that it's really a glorified iPod, so you have all the capabilities associated with that, and the synching with iTunes.

I'd just be getting the iPhone so it wouldn't be a huge deal... especially now that they've announced they'll support third party apps, but I'm trying desperately to wait for the 2nd Gen one which will hopefully have 3G.

I still struggle with my decision to get the Q over the iPhone. For me the $400 price tag, no insurance (I'm damn hard on phones) coupled with having to deal with AT&T were the deal breakers. I'm hoping that by the time my contract on the Q runs out the iPhone will be on a few networks and plenty of 3rd party apps to play with.

How is this still working for you? I am thinking about rejoining the mobile-age and grab Sprint's Moto Q 9c this weekend, and being able to use my touch pretty much anywhere will be one of the determining factors in getting the phone

It's still good, as long as you have Windows Mobile 6.

You can do part of the set up first:

3) Open Settings-> Connections -> Wi-Fi. Select Network Adapters tab. Click IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi.
4) Enter IP address 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Click OK.
5) Select Wireless tab. Add New.. to add the Network name for your ad-hoc network (I prefer "adhoc"
6) Set the client computer to use the same ad-hoc network. Client will receive an IP address from the device (don't need to manually set the IP).
There's also a setting somewhere in the wifi stuff that says only connect to ad-hoc networks, i selected that.

So first things first, get the 2 devices to join the same network, and the phone to provide an IP to the touch. Once you get that far, turn wifi off again.

Then use settings->menus to get accessible icons to make things easy: Internet Sharing, Registry Editor, and Comm Manager.

Run Internet Sharing and hit connect. When it says sharing is active, run the registry editor:
Change HKLM\Comm\ConnectionSharing\PrivateInterface to "TIACXWLN1" (it should currently be "BTPAN1").
Then open Comm Manager and turn wifi on.

Bluetooth will get turned on everytime you turn on internet sharing. After you start up wifi, you can turn it off.

Okay, so, we determined that the Q9c is not actually capable of wifi itself. There is the wifi memory card option, but I have been hearing that this does not always work with the phone. Plus, I am not sure I want to give up the memory I would lose by going that route. The Mogul is wifi capable, but I would lose out on too many other features and gain a bulky, cheap-feeling phone. I am guessing I am pretty much out of options with Sprint to do this Which Q do you have that works and who with? Is it the Q9h?
