Re: Dreadfully sorry.....*yuck*
I will say that it's more offensive to say that someone is "pimping" a woman than a man.
That said, the difference is marginal, and in this context, it's got to be an either/or thing... they're both inappropriate or neither are. This is a sign of not just a liberal bias on behalf of Olbermann, Shuster, and NBC (although it is that) but also a sign of the media's typical behavior toward the Clinton's.
Keith Olbermann sucks.

Hey if Hillary is willing to pimp out her own daughter, doesn't that just prove how dedicated she is to the cause?

Sure does... The personal causes of Bill & Hillary and their tremendous network of political and corporate affiliations.Noysyrump wrote:Hey if Hillary is willing to pimp out her own daughter, doesn't that just prove how dedicated she is to the cause?
People get upset about O'Reilly... I think that's funny. Compared to Olbermann, he's a sweetheart. Olbermann is a rabid dog, a ferociously biased scumbag, who doesn't belong on a news channel. Info-tainment is destroying what journalism used to be.

His show, like O'Reilly or Glenn Beck is an opinion / commentary show, not news. In his role as the host of a commentary program, he's commentator not a journalist, and there's a significant difference between the two roles. Every network has opinion shows that are separate from their hard news operation (although one network blurs the lines between the two far more than others). Commentators , whether left, right or otherwise, are not held to journalistic standards because their role is to deliver opinion, not news. We're free to like / dislike commentators based upon their own biases. Personally, I don't like O'Reilly or Hannity because I don't like their kooky opinions or their apparently pathological aversion to honesty, not because they have opinions (the fact that their viewers are often too stupid to realize they're being fed opinions rather than facts is a different matter). I do like Olbermann because I enjoy his guests and his opinions are generally (but not always) in line with my own, but he's certainly not for everyone.Fash wrote:People get upset about O'Reilly... I'm not sure why it's a big issue that the host of an opinion show apologized for / distanced himself from inappropriate comments made by a frequent contributor on his show.

The problem is, the comments weren't inappropriate. They weren't only accurate but part of common language now. He's even used the term before. It's the false outrage and apologetic horseshit that irks me to the core.Xatrei wrote:

They got OWNED. After the comment, which was harmless, the Clintons' were all of a sudden unsure if they were going to participate in MSNBC's next debate.
The reaction MSNBC should have had: Ok, we'll just lob softball questions at Obama all night and let him have all the press! Your loss!
Fuck the Clintons, and Fuck MSNBC for bowing down and sucking cock instead.

Senator Obama: Tell us about your childhood and why you chose to run for public office.
Senator Hillary: It's been rumored that you were involved with Vincent Foster's death. Were you having an affair with him?
Senator Obama: With all the religious turmoil in the world, is there any hope for peace in our lifetime?
Senator Hillary: Why do you think you can't raise money for your campaign and had to loan yourself five million dollars to continue the race?

Re: Dreadfully sorry.....*yuck*
I disagree. The comments were inappropriate. I'm as opposed to Hillary for president as I am opposed to a McCain presidency, so don't think I'm supporting her by saying this. I had the TV on in the background when Shuster said this. I literally stopped what I was doing, walked across the room to get the TiVo remote so I could confirm what I just thought I heard. The fact that the phrase may be in popular parlance is irrelevant. It's also commonplace to refer to someone as a whore, motherfucker, asshole or cocksucker, but it's not appropriate to do so in a segment on a news discussion program. Common or not, it's still offensive to many people, dubious to others and not even attention getting to some. Shuster and the network should have apologized for it. Personally, I think that suspending him may have been a little too harsh, but it's not unreasonable. Either way, it's certainly MSNBC's prerogative to handle this situation as they see fit.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:The problem is, the comments weren't inappropriate. Re: Dreadfully sorry.....*yuck*
Calling someone's daughter a whore is pretty out of line - even if indirectly. Perhaps the punishment was severe (he didn't get canned though, lucky him) but dang, if somebody called my daughter/mother/wife a whore I'd be pretty darn upset as well... especially if doing so got me free, GOOD, publicity in a hotly contested election.
