Looking for a GPS map device

Post by Deward »

My wife does a lot of driving for her job as a home care nurse. I want to pick up a handheld map gps device but there are a lot of them out there. Can anyone recommend one in the $150-250 dollar range? I would prefer one that didn't require some kind of service contract and that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle, i.e. portable.

For $150-200, I can't recommend the TomTom One GPS more highly. I have been using it constantly for about 6 months now, and everything is great. My roommate bought a GPS at the same time I did, and spent $450 on his, yet the TomTom calculates routes faster, has better directions generally (his seems to send you random ways), has more updated maps, and has more features (like skipping part of a route, traffic if you pay for the service). The only downside is that the One has bluetooth, but no microphone, so you can't make handsfree calls (but the 3rd gen out now might have it, the 2nd gen doe not). The One can be taken between vehicles, and also has a battery that lasts about 3 hours (depending how often it needs to calculate/recalculate), so you can use your cigarette lighter for other things when needed.

Actually, good deal on one today: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U9 ... dealsea-20
