This is sort of a current event.

I know a LOT of people dislike Michael Moore, and i'll admit that he does twist facts to his own favor (not that it isn't a policy used by most human beings). However I found his newest documentrary to be pretty good, if not somewhat biased, it was very thought provoking. He brings up a lot of flaws with our healthcare system, and a lot of comparisons with the french / canadian / UK healthcare systems. No system will be perfect, but ours is far from even acceptable.

This thread isn't really supposed to be a debate about the flaws in ours/french/canadian/etc. healthcare systems, but rather to pose the following question:

Why do people oppose a socialist form of healthcare just because it's "socialist"? We have socialist police departments, school systems, etc. Why not healthcare? I'm honestly curious to see what people respond to this with.

I will say i'm personally in favor of a well managed socialist healthcare system, but I don't nessecarily think it could work right now due to the corrupt use of money that our government has. We need to fix wasteful spending policies and fix this shithole we've dug in iraq first, but I believe sometime in the future it would and should be a viable program. When the future is, is left to be seen.
Going out to play pool now with my fellow klan members. Have a nice night. - Midnyte

American health care, much like any other American industry which has been established as for profit, will never go to a fair (socialist) system. It will never happen because too many millionaires stand to lose MONEY, which is more important to our political system than health. I haven't seen Sicko yet, but I want to watch it.

We accept it because we as Americans are either lazy or robots, collectively. I am sure there are exceptions, just not enough to make a change at this juncture.

Also don't forget the downsides or a socialist healthcare system. Higher taxes, long wait time at hospitals/clinics as well as underpaid/overworked healthcare staff.

I know we're not supposed to bring the healthcare systems of other nations into the debate but I'm wondering where you're getting this information. I've been privy to the socialist healthcare systems of some other countries and I didn't experience a long wait time at all. Also, the nurses were better paid than they are here. All in all, the experiences were far better ones than any American doctor's offices/hospitals I've ever been in.

Sure, the taxes are higher, but when you're done paying insurance and a deductable for you and your entire family, you're pretty much breaking even.

There are dozens of socialist health care systems that are ranked higher than the US.

With my surgeries, medicines and my son's growth hormone injections, I have been paying close to 12,000 dollars a year out of pocket a year for the last several years. I also had to cancel my last knee surgery 3 times fighting the insurance company because it was "Experimental".

I also recently tore the cartilage in my other knee. I went to a urgent care that is owned by the hospital my wife works at. We use their insurance since we are supposed to get free service at their sites. My insurance just sent me a note stating that I need to pay the bill since the urgent care center was not in-network. ??????? It is part of their hospital, all their sites are approved in-network. Insurance companies are just evil.

By the way Sicko will piss you off. I know it is one-sided, but if you have ever had medical issues, you can relate quickly.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

When I think of a socialist type of health care system I think of how it was in the military. Very long waits, hard to get specialized care in anything considered a timely manner, and frankly down right rude staff. I always had the impression the doctors hated being there. Is there some part of this I'm missing? If it would be a wash paying high taxes or paying my already crazy premium whats the point?

I don't think it's fair to compare anything in the military to anything civilian when it comes to medical care.

Our system is designed to leach every dollar you have then let you die. My mother in law was moderately wealthy when she started her downward spiral 10 years ago, now she's penniless. Same thing has happened with my Grandmother in the last 4-5 years.

My experience with military health care was nothing but positive. That was strictly at Navy and Air Force installations, YMMV.
