*bites tongue*PHILADELPHIA - A police officer walked into a doughnut shop Wednesday while it was being robbed and was shot in the head, authorities said, becoming the third officer in four days to be wounded by gunfire in this city.
The 54-year-old officer, Charles Cassidy, was checking on a Dunkin' Donuts shop around 10 a.m., Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said. The robber shot him almost immediately after the officer walked in.

Just so long as they don't shoot him 68 times, because that would be over the line and just as bad as the cop's murder.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:That's awful. I hope they catch this piece of shit and shoot him about 26 times.

I was in the city down the block when it happened. All you could hear for the next 5 minutes were sirens coming from every direction. Was wondering what had happened, but then i saw it on the news that night.

The officer died this morning in the hospital with his family in the room. This kind of shit is intolerable. The amount of respect given to police offers is dwindling away quickly.

Well if they are anything like the police around here, the less respect given them the better.
I'm currently in the process of going through an investigation with the police ombudsman regarding two policemen who decided to throw their weight around, resulting in them breaking more laws than the people involved. Presumably they will lose their jobs. So not exactly a fan of police here.
Still, not nice when people get shot in the head

That's not the way things work here in America. Policemen are our protectors. There will always be exceptions to the rule. The men and women who put themselves in dangers way everyday to try and keep our society safe deserve the utmost respect.Nick wrote:Well if they are anything like the police around here, the less respect given them the better.

It's too bad that only the exceptions get press-coverage.

While I agree that is what they are supposed to be, and I do find this shooting to be horrible, I think this blanket description of law enforcement is a bit misguided. There is a very large representation of piece of shit cops out there.
The good cop v bad cop argument probably does not belong in this thread though.
Once again, terrible news story...just made a face when I read that one about cops being our protectors...
carry on!

Re: Cop shot in Doughnut shop...
Have you ever spent much time in the back of a police station? I have. I had to do 40 hours of community service at one for a MIP (of alcohol) when I was 18. From what I saw, about 35% of cops are pieces of shit. There were definitely some there that were outstanding individuals, people who were police officers to protect and serve. But more of them were assholes who just wanting to pick on whoever they felt like at the time. Some of them were pretty damn racist too.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Large representation? Not jaded, but certainly not naive!Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Large representation? Man, you have a jaded view of life.Canelek wrote:Policemen are our protectors.

Re: Cop shot in Doughnut shop...
Police are in a very unique position of authority that allows them a LOT more temptation to be corrupt than most professions. Many police officers come into their profession solely for the authority/power they know they will gain out of it. While I won't say a majority are corrupt, to say "here in america police are our protectors" is about as stupid as saying that our government is "of the people, by the people, for the people" or whatever dumbfuck propaganda they use these days. It's a nice thought, but completly unrealistic. You have a history of sucking law enforcement cock, so I expect it from you, I just hope you don't actually think it's wholly the truth. It seems a lot of time people either completly demonize all police for the fact that they are police, or they absolve police of anything wrong they could possibly do, simply for the fact that they are police. Neither is a good stance to have.
It's a shame the guy died though.

Mid, you don't seriously buy that drivel do you?
A healthy respect for police is fine, but this whole "they are our knights in shining armour and deserve nothing but respect" thing is idiotically naive.

Re: Cop shot in Doughnut shop...
I will have to pick up on this one. There are 3 types of people who become cops. The nerd in school wanting to get back at everyone,The Ego driven who wants power and have the fate of people lives in their hands good or bad, and the ones who truly want to serve and protect. Its like a 40,30,30 balance. Its even talked about in the police academy.
Thats why it seems there are more bad apples in the police force than good ones. Because the good ones are out numbered. I even had the great pleasure to find out the hard way, spending 2 months in the county jail because of it. Of course I'm a middle class white guy, without enough money to pay for anything and have my life ride on a Public Attorney. Thank god the truth came out, and I was found not guilty, but it sure in the hell fucked up 4 years of my life.
I am now a Police Officer in the Army and work internal affairs(CID) and I help bust the dirt ass fuckers who want to have a ego trip and fuck over people just because they can.
Not everyone is guilty. And I'm pretty sure a good number of people on this board have been pulled over for something they KNOW they didn't do. Its just the rookies (and old timers sometimes) trying to pad their stats so they get on the fast track and get a raise/impress the higher ups. You will normally see those sitting behind a bush waiting for that sucker to come out of the bar walking normal for the easy DUI case even if the guy isn't blowing over a .02. Its all how you word your police report, have the guy scared as hell so he stutters ,seems confused, or just pisses him off so he can be arrested for resisting arrest with violence all on that dash cam.
Its a fucked up world with a lot of bad apples, but there is a lot of good apples who get out shined by the bad ones.

Suspect in Philly Officer Killing Caught

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The suspect in the slaying of a police officer during a doughnut shop robbery was peacefully apprehended early Tuesday at a homeless shelter in Florida, police said.
The search for John Lewis, 21, had extended to Florida after investigators learned he had boarded a bus for there during the weekend, police said. Workers at the Miami Rescue Mission and a separate caller to 911 alerted local authorities he was at the mission's shelter, Miami Police Chief John Timoney said.
Lewis is suspected of shooting Officer Chuck Cassidy during an armed robbery last Wednesday at a Dunkin' Donuts. Cassidy, 54, died Thursday morning. Two other Philadelphia officers were shot last week in separate attacks; they survived.
Miami police Officer Gil Gonzalez said Lewis "seemed kind of relieved" when taken into custody and confirmed he was the man in the mug shot widely circulated over the weekend.
Officers waited for shelter workers to escort Lewis out of the shelter's chapel, Timoney said. He was carrying a Bible.
"The tactics and the restraint used by these officers were remarkable," Timoney said. "Anything could have gone wrong. They used their brains."
Lewis was being questioned by Miami police, and Philadelphia police detectives were on their way to Florida, said Timoney, a former Philadelphia police commissioner.
Witnesses said a gunman entered the doughnut shop and demanded money just before Cassidy, a regular customer, arrived to buy coffee. The gunman spun around and shot the uniformed officer in the head before he could react.
Portions of a videotape released by police showed a hooded robber grabbing the fallen officer's pistol as he fled. Officials said they had received numerous tips before naming Lewis as the suspect over the weekend.
Lewis was arrested in 2005 on drug charges and placed in a treatment program that he completed in February. The drug charges and a 2006 attempted theft charge were then withdrawn. In June, he was again arrested on drug charges; that case is pending.
A private viewing for Cassidy was scheduled Tuesday, with a public viewing and funeral service scheduled downtown on Wednesday.
