Xbox 360 disc read error
As I noted in the Halo 3 thread, 19/20 times when I put a game into my 360 I get a message that says "Please put this disc into an Xbox360 console" which is the exact same message you get when you put a 360 disc into a dvd player. So I have to sit there opening and closing the dvd tray till it finally loads the game (and it really does take about 20 tries). It apparently started happening one day when my roommate was attempting to play Crackdown. I have tried a laser cleaner, which seemed to have no effect, but I didn't think it would because the error would be dirty disc then. I blame my roommates who left the 360 on for weeks on end while I was in CT for business (thank god it didn't overheat).
Anyone ever run into anything like this? I couldn't find any helpful information through googling, and this is going to frustrate me forever when Halo 3 comes out tuesday.

That is what happened to my first 360, and I went and exchanged it.. so that's what I would suggest

Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
any chance he tried hacking your 360 when you were gone? just curious because its saying the drive itself is not a 360 drive, and one of the steps in hacking a 360 is changing the dvd drive type for use in a pc (in order to flash the firmware on the drive). i haven't done it yet, but im thinking about it.

Hmm, I highly doubt it, they are pretty bad with technology, but I'll check.Fash wrote:any chance he tried hacking your 360 when you were gone? just curious because its saying the drive itself is not a 360 drive, and one of the steps in hacking a 360 is changing the dvd drive type for use in a pc (in order to flash the firmware on the drive). i haven't done it yet, but im thinking about it.

I know for sure that wasn't the case with mine, unless my girlfriend has had some leet hacker skillz all this time I never knew about.
Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
Yeah, there's zero chance that Tommy tried to hack that thing. I guess maybe Barnes, but I doubt it. I think I'm about on a par with your roommates, technology-wise, and I can hardly operate your fucking TV, even with that fancy-ass remote you've got.Aardor wrote:Hmm, I highly doubt it, they are pretty bad with technology, but I'll check.
Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
I've got 60-65 Games for the 360 now and haven't had any problems yet with reading the disks.
As far as I know, there's no copy protection on 360s that would screw things up so copies should function the same.
The quality of the DVD9's I buy are probably better than what the original games are burned on though.

Yeah, but they have managed to break 3 DVRs just by using them. Also, when they record a movie, it skips every 10 seconds, and when I do it, there are zero problems.Sueven wrote:Yeah, there's zero chance that Tommy tried to hack that thing. After re-googling this issue, it seems that either I need to send my xbox in, or i didn't copy the dvd drive's key into the new version of the firmware when i updated the firmware (which didn't happen). So hopefully the console lasts through me playing halo 3 (i'm just going to leave it on i guess).
Instead of buying an xbox/halo 3, just come home next weekend instead of this weekend Sueven!

In theory this recruiter lady should be calling in the next 30 minutes, so I should be able to let you know

Same thing happens to me, and I think it may have also started after Crackdown.

Is there any truth to the rumors I've heard that this is the precursor to red ring of death? It seems to happen more often with some games than others, and I haven't tried to hack it at all.

I never had that issue prior to my RROD experience. Just freezing about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after starting a game with no error message.

Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
I hope it's a precursor to the red ring of death, because it started happening about 3 weeks after the 1 year warranty was up, and when I talked to Microsoft today, they said it wasn't covered under the extended warranty for red ring of death. However, Halo 3 starts up much easier than Crackdown or Bioshock, so hopefully I can hold off getting a new 360 for some time.Sylvus wrote:Aardor wrote:As I noted in the Halo 3 thread, 19/20 times when I put a game into my 360 I get a message that says "Please put this disc into an Xbox360 console" which is the exact same message you get when you put a 360 disc into a dvd player. Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
My 360 was freezing about 10 seconds after being turned on after I started screwing around inside it during the hacking process.
I opened it back up and applied the arctic silver thermal paste to the CPU and the GPU and it has worked fine ever since (well it sounds like a jet engine but other than that! I played a normal DVD init the other day and it was actually quiet.
So, for anyone that's out of warranty and has a RROD or other heat issues, I'd recommend checking out my 360 hack thread.

Crack the case open after watching the video and apply some good thermal paste to the CPU and GPU /heatsinks. You may get yourself a working 360 again and still be able to play on Live as long as you don't do one of the firmware hacks. This whole thing is one of the more difficult hacks so I wouldn't recommend it unless your 360 is dead and out of warranty so you have nothing to lose. There's a good chance it just a crappy application of bad thermal gook and fixing that might do the trick.

Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
Welp my DRE with Halo 3 wasn't fixed with a new HDD. My new drive from MS arrived yesterday and everything seemed to work fine for about 2.5 hours or so. Then I got a DRE when playing around in the theater and then it was all downhill from there.
*sigh*
The fact that my 360 works flawlessly with every other game out there really pisses me off too. I don't want to send my unit in to possibly get a POS refurb that might actually RRoD on me.
I might just say "fuck it" to Halo 3 and move on. I've been able to play though the game with my 64MB Memory Unit without even an inkling of an error. The MP is decent but I'm not having nowhere near the same amount of enjoyment out of it that I got out of Shadowrun or R6 Vegas. Maybe a trade-in is in order..

Re: Xbox 360 disc read error
Well my DRE issues started hitting me playing demos with no disks in the drive last night. After Halo gave me my first DRE loading a multiplayer map(had been contained to the campaign during multiplayer before), I started playing a few demos.
Simpsons and Looney Toons Acme Unleashed worked fine.
Crash of the Titans caused a DRE while loading and Viva Pinata Party Animals gave me the same error after the first course.
Bee Movie worked fine at the end of the evening.
Called MS this morning and they're sending me a box after trying to get me to go through some bullshit troubleshooting steps.(Can you try to clean your disk tray? It's not working with demos you dumbass. Same error, no physical disks! FUCKING LISTEN TO ME!)
The shitty part is that I won't have a DVD player for the next month or so. I may have to try the PS2 or pick up the 40$ special at Wally World.
