VeeshanVault AFC Draft Results

Post by Deward »

I am not to pleased with my draft results. I'll do ok at QB (Peyton) and WRs (Wayne and Boldin) but my RBs are pretty iffy. If they live up to expectations then it could be a great year. That rarely seems to happen though. Anyway, here are the results.

1. (6) Peyton Manning
2. (15) Brandon Jacobs
3. (26) Reggie Wayne
4. (35) Anquan Boldin
5. (46) Marshawn Lynch
6. (55) Todd Heap

Brandon Jacobs is an iffy pick at 15. Anquan Boldin will save your draft. Marshan Lynch and Vincent Jackson are nice later round picks as Lynch will probably be startnig on your team ahead of Jacobs. Leinart will be good trait bait later in the season with you having Hasselbeck to backup manning.

I'm going to continue Winnow's tradition of reviewing one team at random. I shall do this without knowing the owner of the team. I encourage others to do the same. I picked the team by checking to see who picked Ben Roethlisberger.
Houston Brawlers
1. (7) Shaun Alexander
2. (14) Reggie Bush
3. (27) T.J. Houshmandzadeh
4. (34) Marc Bulger
5. (47) Calvin Johnson
6. (54) Joey Galloway
7. (67) Vernon Davis
8. (74) San Diego
9. (87) Jeff Wilkins
10. (94) Marion Barber III
11. (107) Bernard Berrian
12. (114) Ben Roethlisberger
13. (127) Jerry Porter
14. (134) Jacksonville
15. (147) Eric Johnson
Shaun Alexander a good pick at 7. Even though he's not an exciting pick, you have to draft him there. Reggie Bush is also a good value pick at 14 as well as a fun guy to have on your team. I'm not thrilled by the wide receivers. T.J's good, but I think Calvin Johnson is a reach at 5. I also don't like taking a kicker in the 9th round. But there are a bunch of good picks in there: QB situation is pretty decent, Vernon Davis at 7, Jerry Porter at 13, Jacksonville at 14. Solid team overall, my grade: A-

Brandon Jacobs is a really bad 2nd round pick. Drafting 3 QB's is not a smart move unless you took Hasselbeck purely for trade value. I also still do not view Reggie Bush anywhere near that high of a value as he still splits carries and was not productive enough last year to be in the top 3 rounds.

I picked
Hypnotics
1. (5) Frank Gore
2. (16) Willis McGahee
3. (25) Carson Palmer
4. (36) Lee Evans
5. (45) Thomas Jones
6. (56) Chris Chambers
7. (65) Kellen Winslow
8. (76) Mark Clayton
9. (85) Kevin Curtis
10. (96) Jay Cutler
11. (105) Denver
12. (116) Brandon Jackson
13. (125) Brandon Jones
14. (136) Tatum Bell
15. (145) Olindo Mare

I picked this one, because I liked his draft. Carson Palmer may have went a round early, but it seems like everyone drafts QB's a round early. The WR's are pretty iffy, but WR's can be so up and down that it is hard to count on their production to win every week. The RB's should be soild weekly performers and you have a defense that will play against some God awful offenses twice a year. Kudos to Winslow in the 7th.

The downside.......you NEVER take a defense or kicker until the last 2 rounds. You let a whole slew of productive WR's and RB's slide out while taking a DEF early. Even the BEST defense in the game is going to score you 15 points weekly. A good WR or RB in a good situation will get you 20+.

I honestly didn't want to take Jacobs that high but since I had taken Peyton first. I HAD to have a RB on that pick. He was the only thing left with a draft value in the top three rounds (according to yahoo). I considered just going the wr route but I rarely see that one win. I only picked 3 QBs for future trade bait. I know someone is going to be hurting and if I can swing a quality RB or WR then it will be worth it. I was actually surpised to see him (Hasslebeck) available that late.

I definitely agree with the defense and kicker late round. If Baltimore or Chicago had been available then I MIGHT have taken them in the 9th round. Once they left the board then I just started loading up on everything else. I never take a kicker till the last round. Seattle in round 12 was a stupid not paying attention autopick. I would never have wasted a pick that high on them. I was still happy to see I got several more starting RBs after I left though. If Portis goes down (likely) or is not productive early then Betts will be a beast.

Manning and Johnson are nice picks although I really would have looked for a RB at the 4th pick. Johnson or Addai would have been available. You are going to be kicking yourself for taking James in round 2. I really just don't like his situation. We will see but he is an aging back with a shaky line. I would have taken an RB but I have no idea what else was available there. Jacobs would have probably been there and while he is risky, he looked really good last year behind Tiki Barber.

Jamal Lewis is another has-been. He might get a thousand yards this year but I don't think he will be more than a 6 td back. Ok for a number two or bye week play though. If LaMont returns to his form of two years ago then he will be a good pick. I got him in later rounds as well just too see what happens. He was a top 10 pick last year and will have a better QB to take the pressure off this year.

Your biggest weakness that I can see is in WR. Chad Johnson is great but you took quite a nose dive after that. I can't say what I would have done without seeign the whole draft but I would have found another top WR in round 4 over Jamal Lewis. Most drafts I saw, Lews was around in teh 6th or later rounds.

I didn't have time to rank my players like I wanted so I got stuck with the default rankings. I'm not really happy with my team but it could have been worse I suppose. If I up the waivers and sub people in and out during the season I may do decent.

I wouldn't have taken Peyton at 4 unless your league rules heavily weigh toward QB's. I think Edge is going to have a better year than he did last year and is a fine starting fantasy back, but I'm not sure I would have taken him in round 2, although if he was the best RB available then it's justifiable. Jamal Lewis at 4 is a decent pick. He's a full-time starter, and you just don't have many of those available in round 4. Philip Rivers at 7 is a great pick. 8 is way too early for a defense that's not Chicago, and I think 5 for Tony Gonzalez is a reach. LaMont Jordan is a great pickup all the way down there.

I give you a B. If I could change what you did, I'd drop Peyton at 4 and pick an RB (Gore, Johnson, Alexander, Addai). Then take Marvin Harrison instead of Edge in round 2. Then you could roll out Rivers/Gore/Lewis/Harrison/Johnson/Gonzalez/SD/Elam, which is a pretty imposing starting lineup. I like it better than Manning/Edge/Lewis/Johnson/Galloway/Gonzalez/SD/Elam. Basically, you traded an upgrade at QB for downgrades at #1 RB and #2 WR.

It's Like watching Mel Kuiper.

I am pretty happy with my team this year, which could be bad news. Every year I am forced to dig through the waivers, I make the playoffs then make a big run to the championship game. This year I changed one thing the autodraft did. I took a gamble on Julius Jones with what was essentially my last pick. I figure with my other running backs I can take a chance on him and see how the new staff uses their backs, also might be good trade bait later if he picks up, or cover me for the ever fragile Portis. One thing the autopick did that kills me was draft a kicker in round 8 (Kaeding). I must have missed him with I reordered. I moved all defense and kickers to the bottom of the list, I thought.

Spang is going to get killed unles Jamal Lewis has a phenomenally good year OR if Ladanian gets hurt. If Burner Turner gets on the field for an extended time, this team will crush people. Other than that, it is foolish to draft any QB in the 1st. Unlike the NFL, running backs are the core of a team.

I select this team to be the big winner over all and it is all due to a single player.

4. (31) Roy Williams
5. (50) Laveranues Coles

Vince Young will be hit with the Madden Curse so Favre will have to play.

EDIT: Note, this is not my team. I play in the NFC.

I appreciate the analyses!

According to this season's NFC scoring, Peyton Manning scored 598.03 fantasy points last season - more points than any other player. 125 points away, in 4th place was the first RB, Tomlinson. I understand the logic in drafting RBs in rounds 1 and 2 but I can't see not drafting Peyton Manning first. He never misses a game, scores the most points and stars in half the commercials on television!
