Lady in the Water

Post by Midnyte_Ragebringer »

I DVR'd this on HBO HD last week and just watched it this morning. God damn this was good. M. Night is so good. He tells one hell of a good story.

I haven't seen this. I was not willing to give him another chance after the bloody abortion he called "The Village". I can say with a fair amount of confidence that movie is the worst movie I have ever seen.

Lady in the Water was terrible. Paul Giamatti is awesome, but M. Nelliattu Shyamalan's story was just bad. Bad-wrong. Badong.

Lady in the Water was worse then the Village.

He is on a slow death spiral to hacktown.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. Worse than "The Village"? Ouch. I know a lot of people liked it, but I thought it was a horrid ripoff of boring hitchcok/twighlight zone.

I did like "Unbreakable" though.

Every movie he's made has been worse than the last. I've seen them all except Lady in the Water and I think the reason why I keep watching his movies is because I'm intrigued with how bad it can actually get. Sixth Sense was great, Unbreakable OK (had moments), Signs had laughable cinematography and insipid dialogue, The Village was poop from every angle. I don't get why people keep giving him money.... Maybe they too are intrigued with just how bad film can be...

Unbreakable and signs were also horrendous movies. I really don't know how you could any enjoyment out of such train wrecks.. Really, almost every movie of his would make my top 20, possbily top 10 worst movies of all time, with the exception of Sixth Sense, and I think without Bruce Willis and the little kid it would have been crap too.

Wow. I'm so stunned at this reaction. I think the man is a genius. His films are among my favorites. Oh well. Different strokes.

I have only seen Sixth Sense and Signs... But seriously an alien race attacks a planet where their entire invasion force will be wiped out by rain? Sixth Sense was pretty good.

Yeah pretty sad, water makes them die but they decide to try and take over a planet that is 98% water, totally understandable! At least in War of the Worlds you could make the excuse that the aliens didn't know that the bacteria here would fucking pwn them, although considering how advanced they were supposed to be, I even have a hard time buying into that one (yes I know wotw wasn't directed by the douchebag in question.)

I really like that depressed, broken middle aged man thing that Giamatti does. Despite Maddox protestations, I thought Sideways was an excellent film, "I'm not drinking any fucking merlot!".

I liked this film, but did think Shyamalan seems a little too self indulgently pretentious direction/plot wise to be taken as seriously as he wishes to be.

All in all, it was different, which when executed well, as in this case, is usually pretty good. Although I definitely wouldn't have liked it as much if Giamatti hadn't been in it. He's great.

I sure hope not! It's 70% of the earths surface that is water. Otherwise, it's a big f'n rock.

I feel that both Lady in the Water and The Village were subpar movies. At least Lady in the Water tried to have a greater storyline going on in the background. The Village was just bad. I'm also sick of him casting himself in all of his films. It's distracting.

I do disagree with most opinions about Signs though. If you take out the ending, the rest of the movie was fantastic. Character introduction, cinematography, and overall pace were exceptional from the very beginning up until the very end. I also liked the underlying lesson of faith vs coincidence. The acting was fantastic, including the children. But damn they messed up on the aliens big time. "I can build a spaceship but can't open a door". WTF? I understand how dumb that is, yet the remaining 95% of the movie was great. The aliens were merely a plot device to trigger the character development that followed. That development process is what makes the movie good to me.

I haven't seen the Village but I know the premise. I am curious to see it but not willing to pay for it now.

I liked Signs and Unbreakable very much.

But then again I liked Waterworld too and Battlefield Earth. Not Love. Like. They entertained me enough. If a movie entertains me then I am happy enough.

I don't come close to being able to debate the nuances of cinematography or anything like that. I am good enough to see when things are just plain stupid or out of the realm of the wildest possibility or when the camera work gets the damn boom in the shot.
