One Hit Wonders
I grabbed a "One Hit Wonders" double CD off the Newsgroups awhile back and it brought back a lot of memories from songs you don't hear as often as some others. I hit YouTube and tracked down the videos for them all. Some of the video quality isn't that great! I'd embed them but it's 30 videos so I'm going with the links this time!
I'll post the album if peeps want it. ~190-220kbps tracks.

Re: One Hit Wonders
Sugarhill gang != one hit wonder!!
And although I am not sure I agree if Blu Cantrell really fits the category either, if she was a one hit wonder, the song that would be mentioned would be "Breathe" Featuring Sean Paul.

Re: One Hit Wonders
Gregg Alexander (aka: New Radicals) is an interesting one.
He's first and foremost a songwriter/producer.
The New Radicals were never really a band. He wrote and produced the whole album as well as playing guitar, bass and some of the drum tracks. He brought in friends and studio musicians to flesh out the rest of the tracks.
He toured the album for about 6 months then apparently just got sick of it and disbanded the 'band'.
He was contractually obligated to release a second single/video which you can see here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=F8aCFYW5eUU
I was lucky enough to catch him/them live back in 1998.
His songwriting and production credits are lengthy. His best known song is probably Game Of Love (Branch/Santana).
The New Radicals might have been one hit wonders, but the person behind them certainly isn't.

Re: One Hit Wonders
'All Along the Watch Tower' was his only hit.
Make love, fuck war, peace will save us.
Re: One Hit Wonders
As for singles---A side All Along the Watchtower. B side Burning of the Midnight Lamp, September 21, 1968 US chart-#20, was his highest charting single in th US.
Arguably a no hit wonder!
Album wise
Are You Experienced? August 26, 1967 #5 (U.S.)
Axis: Bold as Love February 10, 1968 #3 (U.S.)
Electric Ladyland October 19, 1968 #1 (U.S.)
He had 6 other singles. none broke the top 50.
Ironically his 4th album release, a "best of" which went to #6 US was titled.... Smash Hits!!
Of course this is based on Billboard sales numbers.

I actually researched this and started to make a post, but was detracted by the huge list of massive hits that never made the billboard charts.Knarlz wrote:As for singles---A side All Along the Watchtower. taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_ ... its_chartsIn December 1998, the policy was further modified to allow tracks to chart on the basis of airplay alone without a commercial release. This change was made to reflect the changing realities of the music business. Previous to this, several substantial radio and MTV hits had not appeared on the Billboard chart at all, because companies chose not to release them as standalone singles, in hopes that their unavailability would spur greater album sales. Not offering a popular song to the public as a single was unheard of before the 1970s. Among the many pre-1999 songs that had ended up in this Hot 100 limbo were Nirvana's "All Apologies," the Cardigans' "Lovefool," Smash Mouth's "Walking on the Sun," OMC's "How Bizarre," Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta," Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity," Everclear's "Santa Monica," Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song," Fastball's "The Way," the Smashing Pumpkins' "Disarm," Veruca Salt's "Seether," and The Cranberries' "Zombie," as well as numerous Green Day, Live, Offspring, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mariah Carey, Alanis Morissette and Foo Fighters tracks.
Those were all huge songs, and easily big hits.
So I guess, only including US charts, Spang is correct on a technicality. However, if you include UK charts, Jimi had several #1's (singles and albums).
I also thought to argue the point of an artist being so far ahead of his/her time that they could not be appreciated at their present time of release...but we'd just be arguing semantics, which I find to be pointless.
So it really all comes down to whether or not a #1 constitues a one-hit-wonder, and blahbity blah bullshit, etc.
Jimi is far from what I would consider a one-hit-wonder. But when it all comes down to it, what you (and someone else) considers a one-hit-wonder is pretty subjective.

Re: One Hit Wonders
Just a guess, and I have no wish to research it, but I would not be shocked if this was the case for many artists that "we" consider to be one-hit-wonders.So I guess, only including US charts, Spang is correct on a technicality. Re: One Hit Wonders
More semantics.... A one hit wonder is a band which had basically one song for which they are remembered. A flash in the pan group that came out of nowhere and vanished just as quickly.
Jimi hendrix should not be on anyones list for this.

It's not semantics. If someone ONLY remembers Hendrix for one song, which many do, why are they wrong for considering him to be a one-hit-wonder?Fash wrote:More semantics.... Re: One Hit Wonders
I meant one song for with they are remembered for by the general populace. I might only remember lynyrd skynyrd for freebird, but i wouldn't call him a one hit wonder, we all know he's had other popular shit whether or not i liked it or remember it.Boogahz wrote:It's not semantics. "One hit wonder" is a two-parter. 'One hit' and then you 'wonder' "Whatever happened to them?"
Hendrix doesn't fit that classification.
