Oh I like 134340 much better

Pluto has been given a new name to reflect its new status as a dwarf planet.

On Sept. 7, the former 9th planet was assigned the asteroid number 134340 by the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the official organization responsible for collecting data about asteroids and comets in our solar system.

The move reinforces the International Astronomical Union's (IAU) recent decision to strip Pluto of its planethood and places it in the same category as other small solar-system bodies with accurately known orbits.

Pluto's companion satellites, Charon, Nix and Hydra are considered part of the same system and will not be assigned separate asteroid numbers, said MPC director emeritus Brian Marsden. Instead, they will be called 134340 I, II and III, respectively.

There are currently 136,563 asteroid objects recognized by the MPC; 2,224 new objects were added last week, of which Pluto was the first.

Other notable objects to receive asteroid numbers included 2003 UB313, also known as "Xena," and the recently discovered Kuiper Belt objects 2003 EL61 and 2005 FY9. Their asteroid numbers are 136199, 136108 and 136472, respectively.

The MPC also issued a separate announcement stating that the assignment of permanent asteroid numbers to Pluto and other large objects located beyond the orbit of Neptune "does not preclude their having dual designations in possible separate catalogues of such bodies."

Marsden explained that the cryptic wording refers to the future possibility of creating a separate astronomical catalogue specific to dwarf planets. There might even be more than one catalogue created, he said.

The recent IAU decision implies "that there would be two catalogues of dwarf planets-one for just the trans-Neptunian Pluto type and the other for objects like Ceres, which has also been deemed a dwarf planet," Marsden told SPACE.com. "That's why that statement was put there, to reassure people who think there would be other catalogues that this numbering of Pluto doesn't preclude that."

Pluto's asteroid number was first reported today on the website of Sky and Telescope magazine.

Seriously who the fuck cares? It's still Pluto in my eyes.. It's still a planet in my eyes.. it will remain that way as far as I'm concerned and quite frankly, I really dont care what some bored scientists with nothing better to do say..

But anyway, anybody else have some thoughts on this?

I'm voting for whichever presidential candidate vows to make Pluto a planet again even if it requires manned space trips to transport raw matarial to make Pluto bigger and place it in a more planetary orbit.

It's a lump of ice and rock numpty-gazillion miles away - I really don't care.

70 years ago they found it and called it a planet. Then, through further scientific research found out it's not really a planet after all. Fine. That's how science and the advance of human knowledge works.

Get over it.

It should be grandfathered in as a planet until it dies!

You stick-in-the-mud creationist types can call it what you want if it persuades you the sky won't fall in :P

I agree. Stripping it of it's planethood is indian giving, and its bullshit!

We should strip mine it until it is more "asteroid sized".

So I guess when they discovered the Earth wasn't the center of the universe, most of you would be bitching because you didn't want to learn the new way.

Get over it. If it isn't a planet, I'd rather say its not a planet.

Im willing to compromise. To save the resources required to place Pluto in a planetary orbit, add to it's mass, and possibly having to reform the entire body in the official way planets are supposed to form, why not keep calling it Pluto out of respect but not call it a planet anymore.

No matter what it is, everyone recognizes it by the name Pluto. I don't care what the official rules are for naming objects in the sky are, renamming pluto and it's former moons, "134340 I, II and III" is retarded.

How many times are you going to see, "134340 I, II and III (formally known as Pluto) in news, articles, books, lectures, etc.

When the center of the solar system shifted from Earth to the Sun, no renaming was necessary!

What a retarded analogy. Renaming Pluto is utterly pointless. Maybe the nostalgic element to this is lost on a prolific scientific pioneer like yourself.

They didn't take the name away, they just gave it a number to reflect it's new status as a dwarf planet. Bickering about that has no point, unless it's for your own humor. It's a pretty sweet deal for Pluto, which is way less massive then our own moon. It has graduated from the tiniest of planets to the new big dog in the Kiper (sp?) belt. So now it's got a name and number. It still gets to chill with Neptune every now and then.

hmmm, Pluto: King of the Kuiper Belt

I'll check with P's publicity agent.

It needed a number because that is how those objects are classified. Like asteroids, which are all recognized by a number (corresponding to the order they were discovered, not so coincidentally also the order of size), many Kuiper Belt Objects also have a classic name. This works with stars as well. Alpha Cygni is also known as Deneb. Asteroid 0000001 is also known as Ceres. KBO 134340 is also known as Pluto.

Note: The asteroids number coincides with the size because the vast majority of them were discovered in a time when finding a very dim object in the night sky was a monumental task. The brighter objects were discovered first, and with the objects mostly being of similar distances, the brighter objects were the larger objects.

I gots to say, I don't think the scientists in question give a fuck whether you call it pluto or 13480391259 or butt-planet.
