Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but I've always felt the Halo series has been overrated. As far as I know, it got big because there were no other decent FPS's on xbox at the time. Did it really break any new ground in either of the two previous games that we hadn't already seen on PC's or even other consoles?
Not trying to give the game shit - i've played it several times and can see the fun in it, but I just think it's overrated.
I'm honestly curious, what am i missing here?

I dont like it, Subpar storyline. Weak graphics. (How does Halo 2 look worse than Halo 1 somtimes?) Sluggish controls. With its' overratedness theres tons of idiots playing it online. Vista bullshit. (if a game that shitty looking actually NEEDS vista to run, then vista sucks or halo is very badly coded)
Halo is the FF7 of FPS. Overrated by Fanbois everywhere.

Sorry I ignored your request to play the beta Funk. I was in a game at the time and about to leave for the night
Having skipped Halo 2 and meh'ed my way through Halo 1(not a fan of the Master Chief Character at all), I wasn't really expecting much.
This just seems like a very vanilla run and gun Quake Deathmatch clone (sans rocket launcher) with an fantastic lobby/party system and stat gathering mechanisms.
Games like these are the exact reason I really enjoy titles like Rainbow 6:Vegas and Chromehounds in Multi-Player. It's a lot less about how fast you can twitch and a lot more about real skill and strategy.
With all the Great games soming around the time this is released, I'm more than likely going to be passing on this round of Halo as well.

I figured that much!
I was not a fan of the other halo games myself, I barely played either one. I have been liking the beta so far though, I guess I like to have a little variety and I have been playing a lot of GRAW 2 online lately, so a game that is a bit simpler is a fun break.
The one thing that annoys me is that the online is so similar that all the losers that have been playing halo 2 online every day since it was released are still kicking ass.

Are you talking about Halo / Halo 2 on the PC or on the xbox? There is no doubt that Halo 2 had better graphics than Halo on the xbox, and PC versions of the game are not comparable to the Xbox versions. I believe Halo 2 is vista only because it requires directx 10, so it's not "badly coded" it's just not coded for systems with directx 9 (which is a terrible idea).Sionistic wrote:I dont like it, Subpar storyline. Halo got big because it was a Launch title on the xbox (so there weren't other FPS on the xbox yet), and at the time, it had the most impressive graphics of any game, PCs included. When the xbox was released, it was using graphic technology that had not been released to the PC market yet, and Halo was able to show off what it could do. Additionally, it was one of (if not the first) games to use a pc style control system (one control for looking, one for movement).Mr Bacon wrote:Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but I've always felt the Halo series has been overrated. Halo 2 was groundbreaking with its online matchmaking system. It was the first game to feature such a robust system with a large base of players (thanks to Halo's success). The single player story line was lacking, but that was mostly due to bungie being pressured to release the game, which they have even said was unfinished.

One thing I've noticed is that it does seem somewhat easy to get proficient at the thing. Although I was last in the ranks, I was still able to take out some of the more proficient players. I was the only one in my last game to get a double kill with a grenade and I also had the highest streak in the game with 4 people between deaths.Funkmasterr wrote:I figured that much!

Now that I have the controls down I need to learn the weapons and get used to the grenage physics.

I think I figured out my main problem. Generally in a FPS your movement is so damn slow that the first thing I do is immediately pump up my sensitivity on my controls. I turned it up two levels on the beta right away too, and I think if I turn it down to where it was I will have an easier time with aiming.Animalor wrote:One thing I've noticed is that it does seem somewhat easy to get proficient at the thing. But yeah, I definitely need to get a hang of the weapons being as I haven't hardly played halo before at all.

Re: Halo 3
Halo 2 for PC is pretty much an exact port of the xbox game. It looks like ass.I believe Halo 2 is vista only because it requires directx 10, so it's not "badly coded" it's just not coded for systems with directx 9 (which is a terrible idea).
The only reason it requires Vista is for the Windows Live service which is not supported by any other OS.

Re: Halo 3
I have grown tired of the Halo beta, and unless some major changes (I honestly don't even know what changes) are made I think I will be sticking the the single player and co-op when the game comes out. My major gripes are:
1- The matchmaking system is crap. I would prefer to see games get rid of these entirely, meaning you could have whoever you want on your team in a ranked match, and play against whoever (like gears before they got rid of the host name for ranked games). Yeah, in some matches teams might be stacked heavily, but oh well.
As it is in Halo 3, when I play a game with a few of my friends that are both rank 5 at the moment (and I am 10) - we consistently end up getting another rank 4-6 as our fourth player, and get pitted against a team with 4 people ranked 10-15.. While this is fine once in a while, every game makes it pretty much obnoxious, which leads to the next point-
2- The game mechanics are almost exactly the same as Halo 2, so the Halo 2 geeks that have given up their social lives for the past 2 or 3 years it's been out obliterate people who aren't in the same league as them. While this is not a fault of the developers, it takes the fun out of playing the game- because you aren't on an even playing field. If I don't buy a game when it comes out and then start playing it online months after other people - that is my own fault.. But in this case, I didn't play the previous game in the series for years like other people - which screws me from day 1 on the new game, and this just bugs me.
3- There is a lot that needs balancing. Warthogs immediately come to mind, because they are absurdly over powered. On the Valhalla map in the beta, everyone gets on the fucking warthog right away and just drives around and mows people over. I would have no problem with this if I was playing Carmageddon, but I'm not - I'm playing Halo. It takes usually about 6 grenades or so to blow up the warthog, which is a joke to try and do while it is moving (and don't even bother mentioning trip mines, that's no better) and if said teams makes a rush for the spartan laser - the game is over before it even begins.
Other weapons need to be balanced too, I think the spartan laser should be taken out entirely personally.. But I also think a good portion of the weapons need to be brought down a notch or two.
4- I think the map choices for the beta were poor. Snowbound is the only one that I think really fits and that I like to play on. High Ground is not really a deathmatch map, it is a map for capture the flag. And Valhalla is far too large for a 4 on 4 match, this map is too large to be for anything less than a 16 on 16 match.
5- This game is at the head of the pack in another type of matchmaking thing that I want to see go away: random map/game mode selection. I want to be able to create a ranked match on whatever map I want, whatever game mode I want, and have only the weapons I specify available on that map - not this randomly pick shit.
I know there are other things I am missing, but overall I am not so thrilled and don't see myself playing much of the multiplayer when this does come out.
